Isn't it a little strange this isn't available as a download? Aren't most games (and MMO's in particular) available as a paid/trial download? I'm not interested in playing just yet, but it's a pretty glaring omission I think.

Considering the game still is in its free trial period, I don't find it strange yet. It even took awhile before FFXI had free trials I believe. What SE desperately needs is more advertising than free trials right now. Perhaps closer to when the PS3 version is released we'll see free trials going up. But for now, I wouldn't count on that. Sorry.

I didn't quite mean that. I mean the full retail game for purchase as a download too.

There's always torrenting. I used a buddy pass (which basically counts as the full version game key) so that's how I got my copy.

I don't know anyone who bought/plays. :-) Haha. Like I said, the game's not in a place where I'm ready to play it personally yet, but it just struck me as a pretty big omission.

Yeah I felt that way as well back when I was trying to get the game to use my buddy pass. Seemed odd that a MMO of all games wouldn't have an online version available for purchase and/or download. Guess they just really wanted to nail people for $50 for the box to help recover the losses of producing the game for 5 years. They could put it on Steam or something (FFXI is already there) but I'd just chalk it up to SE not being one for good ideas like that.

It was quite a while before XI showed up on Steam, with SEs increasing footprint on Steam lately though I'd assume XIV will be there in the next year or so.

Wait wait, if I buy a normal, standard edition, retail copy... I can have a friend play for free as well? Sorry if this has already been explained, but this information could give us a population +2 if it works the way I'm thinking it does. XD

CE comes with buddy pass. Buddy pass is just a 2nd registration code- in effect, a 2nd copy of the game. Standard does not come with 2 reg codes.

SE offered a 10-day trial of FFXI last year sometime and then scrapped the idea because it was being used more by RMT than people actually interested in trying the game. Given their seeming ignorance and paranoia regarding RMT, I would expect that they'd see a free trial + digital download of FFXIV as simply taking them down that same road. I wouldn't expect a digital download/trial opportunity any time soon, if ever.

Yeah, instead they lowered the price of the game+ all expansions to the price of a burger at the Texas Roadhouse. If someone can't even invest 10 dollars of their own money into something, chances are they're not going to be able to invest 15 a month. That or they are RMT.
