Simple question: Why do the wards reset and log out our retainers, seemingly on a daily basis?

My retainers are almost never where I left them when I log in the next day. The ward system is already trying my patience, what gives with this? Does this happen to anyone else?

From what I've noticed, it seems each levequest reset, one of the three cities market wards gets reset. I'm pretty sure it's a tactic to clear out the retainers of inactive players, and lower congestion. Which is all right by me actually. I think there's some kind of rotation between the cities, but I haven't paid attention enough to figure it out. I just make sure to check my retainers after each levequest reset.

If thats true, then thats pretty bad. It seems possible, but I can't believe SE would do something like that with the current PR state of their game. If we can't efficiently buy/sell its gonna make their case for keeping the wards even worse.

Well if my theory is true, market wards should only reset in each city on average of 4.5 real life days. So it's not overly bothersome, at least for me personally. I haven't noticed it happening on a seemingly daily basis, but I could be wrong.

It's part of SE's ongoing effort to quell the existence of any sort of workable economy. No economy, no RMT, get it?

No? Well you're just not thinking hard enough... or, more likely, you're thinking too much.

Funny!

I'm just hoping people actually begin to put their retainers in the proper ward for what they're selling. Especially now that we get two for free.

IDK, I have my retainer in the proper ward at a stall selling shields.
Since the Nov update on Bodham, the wards reset randomly usually once a day, and it's not an exaggeration to say at least 3x a week they reset 2-3 times a day.

I can't sell something if my retainer is constantly MIA.
They updated the wards to not wipe during an update, or maintenance, but how is that more important than fixing the constant crashing?
I don't play much on the weekend, and that's when I make the most sales. Not the last month though. I've taken to logging on in the morning just to check and reset the retainer, and EVERYTIME my retainer is gone when I recheck it before I go to bed. If the wards can't handle 50 retainers and the traffic, something needs to be adjusted.

I have heard mention that the every day situation is actually due to the wards CRASHING. There is in fact an "official" reset once every 5 days, week, or whatever--but that's supposedly not what's going on in a lot of (recent) cases. This seems to have become a common occurrence with the 11/25 patch.

I was unaware there was a scheduled reset of retainer every 4-5 days. However, it is a good idea for many reasons. But yeah, the recent resets have been random crashes I guess?

I have noticed that my retainer has taken a break from the wards myself but I just call him back and put him in place. I do not rent a bazaar for just that reason... don't like wasting the 500 gil just to have him gone when I come back to check up on sales at the end of the day. They (SqEnix) would have to reset ward retainers every so often otherwise the wards would fill up with the retainers of people that have quit the game. How many people have come and gone from all our linkshells and all the retainers that could have potentially been left standing around filling up the wards to the point that people that have active accounts can't post a retainer in the appropriate ward.

As for the retainers not permanently disappearing during maintenance or whatever, I thought that was happening in the first major patch of the 1st quarter of 2011.

I myself haven't noticed the reset happening everyday. Maybe like some posts suggested, it rotates between 3 cities, and you just happened to move your retainer to that particular city? Personally I like the reset...Ever tried to summon a retainer in a particular ward but cannot, since it's filled to capacity with retainers selling random stuff? Besides it lets me summon my retainer from another city before putting him back into the ward.

The only problem I see with resets is how it affects players who can't necessarily log on everyday. It can certainly be exacerbating to return to market ward after several days, only to find there has been a reset and your retainer never had a chance to sell his/her wares. I can't think of any remedies for that yet, but voicing your concerns on the Feedback Forum could be one way to go.

...Or maybe an AH lol?

well idk if its intentional or not, but i could swear i remember SE saying that it isnt intentional and that they plan on fixing it after they get all this other stuff sorted out? seems so familiar.

anyway, not only is it a bad replacement for an AH, but since i dont use my retainer im sad to hear that not only do you have to re-setup and place your retainer every other day, but that also means you get less than half the time to sell something as every other MMO allows you to.

They stand there for around 4 days..doing nothing...just standing there...do you have any idea how BORING that is? I'd go home after 2 hours of it, they manage 4 days...sure they're game characters, but there has to be a point where even semi-mobile bits of code have had enough and go back home to their little code-spouses and code-kiddies.

All joking aside, even though it does add realism in the form of time ("oh, workday's over, time to go home") it is somewhat annoying. Would be even more annoying if i had more than 20 different types of items I didn't end up vendoring or keeping. As is, most of the items wouldn't even sell if they stayed there for a month.

This happened yesterday and again today. When I walked into the wards they were empty.

I am one saying the wards are crashing. I say this because I happened to catch the wards when they were mysteriously unavailable at one point. After 5 minutes of checking, they were finally available and completely bare.

you can get mad at SE for introducing new features but the people who sign up after you won't know the difference and happily accept it as normal :[ a lot of rage i notice is from people still trying to turn ffxiv into xi. if it turns into xi then i will facepalm other people because im looking for something new and fresh and this retainer thing is +1 if you ask me. because more difficulty = more excitement. im not rich in game but i get like 100k gil from my retainer each time i check up on it. then all that money goes to armor repairs for the day Dx

oh yeah and shopping is fun so finding a retainer that has what i want is a rush even if it takes 5 days to find 1 thing i really wanted cus it feels good when i finally get it. this is only fun when theres a handful of retainers to look through in every room. if you walk into battlecraft theres like a million people and suddenly, not so fun. they give you free teleports to walk to market wards all the time so i dont see the anguish with having to resetup your retainer since its so easy.

You mean, functional?

I'm fine with steps forward in a new direction. It's all the steps backwards that are getting on my nerves. FFXIV shows very clearly why new isn't always better.

It wasn't exactly a bold new step to cripple the ability to buy and sell items.

Well, I don't mind the official reset, as it's not exactly any different than items on the auction house in FFXI coming off the list after a few days. Other crashes... well, yes, I do mind. Ul'dah seems to not get them too often on Besaid though, at least not that I've seen.

Not only that, by staggering which city gets the wipe, it means there's two viable wards to browse through at all times. Though it would probably be better if retainers vanished on an individual basis, not a citywide basis.
