I read somewhere that SE is building the FFXIV for the chinese market. So does it mean that the chinese will also play on the same server as the others or will they have dedicated server?

No, it'll be a totally different version with different servers.

They are planning to have separate servers for Chinese players. Nothing surprising, and i frankly feel sorry that they cant join the international festivities.

In news relating to this, Square Enix has teamed up with a chinese feedback firm to gather player response from asia. They pretty much feel that whatever the Chinese feel about the game we feel the same way.

Or, more likely, they are using the information to market the Chinese version of the game as well as to take preventative measures against Chinese playing on the worldwide servers, and to covertly find out what their sworn enemies (RMT) are planning.
They also have partnerships with feedback firms in almost every other section of the world. Not too sure about Russia, Africa, and the Middle East, though.

It's my understanding that players in China have their own dedicated servers, as their government regulations require video games to conform to certain censorship laws. So they will not be playing with the rest of us.

Yeah, that's right, call people racist before spending ten seconds on Google finding out that it's Chinese laws that motivate separate servers.

Seriously, it was the second item on the list when I typed a search string that misspelled two of the four words. You have to be aggressively ignorant (or just desperate to sling accusations of racism, I suppose) to not bother finding the real answer before indulging in a knee-jerk reaction.

I'm sure any Chinese players who want to use the international servers will find a way, since plenty of people inside PRC are already playing the game.

Study your politics and you'll know why, it has nothing to do with racism, its more like media censorship.

Actually, I'm pretty ok with this. As long as they are all on separate servers (not to be mean, but it just doesn't seem all too productive having people on the same server as me that i cannot understand or interact with), and SE doesn't tailor make the game solely to their needs (not that i assume they would feel any differently about the game than us, but who knows?), it could be a good thing. We all know that SE is in poor shape right now financially, and any sales that they could get would be a good thing. China would be a big market, meaning a lot of cash for SE, and more funding for the game. I don't wanna see FFXIV fail, and therefore, it could use all the help it can get. Again, as long as it doesn't affect the overall shape of the game i'm playing, I see this as a potential good thing.

When WoW launched in China they had to remove all in-game references to demons and undead as I recall. Apparently anything that resembled a demon was replaced with a bag. Kind of tricky to do when you've got an entire class based around summoning demons to fight for them. I would expect it would be the same thing with FFXIV. Imps would probably be a no-go, as would skellies, probably ogres, and anything else that came along after that referenced demons or undead directly...all not kosher under Chinese media laws.

That is oooooold news man. Do a forum search, there was at least one thread dedicated to its discussion.

Short answer: No.

Specific example of why Chinese censorship could be difficult for shared servers--you can't have exposed bones in video games in China. So, if SE decided to add skeleton mobs (which might already exist--IDK), they couldn't because then China would be the game. WoW:Wrath of the Lich King came out TWO YEARS LATER in China, because every single undead mob had to be edited to look like something that had no bones showing (which all existing undead models did, besides the Death Knight skins for playable races).

This is just one of many censorship laws--it's just easier to separate them.

Taiwanese players can use the international version, though, as can those in Hong Kong (I think). And anyone can import it illegally. But you can technically get in trouble for that.

A simple /facepalm would have done. You don't have to be rude about my question. I asked because I know of the political issues and censorship of China. I don't live under a rock like many people do. So don't act like an a$$hat toward me.

I asked because I didn't think the censorship went to the extreme of videogaming.

When I studied censoships of Latin America, video games didn't exist, at the time it was things like news papers, radio shows, books, follati`ns, etc... So it did not dawn upon me that a video game would be censored. Sorry for even asking.

And the racists comment was meant as a joke. I have a few japanese friends who are constantly saying things about "Darn Chinese" etc. Sorry if you didn't see the sarcastic tone in the rhetorical question.

Yea, this was SEs plan all the while, making a game that gets awful reviews so RMT wouldn't see it as a profitable market, and when all focus lands on WoW after Cataclysm, SE will pick up full force and RMTs by then may already have a large portion of their investments on WoW, so FFXIV will suffer minimal impact....

SE banzai!!!!!!

^_^ nosrsly....

Actually, they didn't ban demons (that I know of, at least). I remember seeing a few videos of Chinese players running around with Voidwalkers in PVP a few times. Of course, censorship of WoW in China has hit various levels over the years. For example: http://kotaku.com/275950/china-censors-wow-skeletons

They banned skeletons, insisting that they be covered with flesh. And player corpses were turned into graves.

Harmonious society, indeed!
