So I have not kept up with FF14 for a bit, I was looking forward to it a while back but turned away with all the cap/issues the game seems to have (or not, I read sites..posts..ya'know, places with more info then I have).

So I was here (can't think site for some reasom while at work: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=24521) reading, and I see it is free to play?

Is this true? I do enjoy trying out free games, that are free...

Actually, no. $60 to play, just sans the monthly fee for the moment.

so do i have to give out a Credit card? or just sign up and DL?
Or is it I need to go buy the game 1st?

Wouldn't mind see the game, as I played FFXI for a good 3.5 years before moving on.

Its $30 brand new at my gamestop...I'd say that's a good deal as the game has got a lot better since release and is pretty enjoyable and its free monthly for now.

No credit card needed you just need to buy the game afaik. You MAY need it for sign up but not too sure.

You have to buy it unless someone is willing to give you a buddy pass for free.

If you use crysta you dont need a CC to sing up at all. you don't need to have any crysta on your account to sing up.

In order to make my account active I had to give the account detail my (eventual) monthly fees would be coming from through the Square Enix account management tool, (idk if they've improved it since, but if not then) prepare yourself for some really strange sounding sentences when navigating. Being high while doing so should help.

The fun part for me was a few days later when my credit union rang me up to say "hey, there's this internet billing company that's trying to deduct a small amount from your account. We're suspicious about it because that's the sort of acitivity that internet scammers try to use - they try to get small amounts first, and if able to to confirm it's a valid account they'll hit you up from a bigger amount. So we'd like to suspend your account until you can either confirm it's ok, or otherwise ask us to change your account number."

Of course at this point I'm completely freaking out....

I tried the SE support site first. I actually got a response, however it was basically 'we don't know anything about it, please contact the billing company.' Though said very politely of course ^^. Which is strange since they're the ones who contracted said billing company for their services ....

I checked the billing company's details on the web. Their web page indicated their practise was to commence a small debit request to confirm the account details and then cancel said request before it completes, leaving the details confirmed for the regular billing. Now you shouldn't trust web pages just because they're on the web ... so I emailed the credit unions security section, outlined what I knew so far, and asked them if they were aware that the internet company was legit then to remove the block, however if they were aware this particular company was known for fraudulent behaviours to change my a/c number. The security team then removed the block within 24 hrs.

My relationship with FFXIV is already at a love/hate point, and I think that the sheer hope that the game will get better further on is the only thing that keeps me logging in. Seeing that the game has gone down in price 30 bucks hurts. I paid 60 bucks to get that game. Sure, 30 bucks might not be that much, (4-5 hours at minimum wage or so) but then again, that could have been the 4-5 hours that I had screaming parents in my face.

TL;DR
I'm still not happy with my initial purchase, and even though SE has been working hard to try and improve the gameplay experience, I don't feel like I've gotten my money's worth, and it worries me that I might not ever get it.

But then again, that's just my opinion, nothing more.

For those saying you need to place a payment method, simply select Crysta, it won't ask you for a credit card. A buddy pass is completely free and no credit information is required.

Lemme get this straight. You paid 60 dollars for the game. You've now had OVER 3 months of free gameplay, and they still haven't announced when the game will be pay-to-play, but you haven't gotten your moneys worth and you don't know when you will? I just really don't understand that statement. I mean, if you don't like the game, stop playing. It's as simple as that. Clearly if 3 months of free play and VAST improvements in most facets of the game hasn't won you over, this probably isn't the game for you and you should move on...

Personally, I have a hard time understanding how people who still play right now haven't gotten their moneys worth. But that's just my opinion...

Because we don't like playing this unfinished empty boring game... We log on a couple times a week (maybe), play for an hour or two, try to enjoy it, then logout cause it's just not any fun to play. SE could give me a lifetime of free play, but until this game gets some major overhauling, i will feel like i wasted 60 bucks.

Right now, i guess i'm enjoying watching this unfold, wondering if SE can actually make this game fun... But i don't think i'll play when they start charging, no matter how good it gets. That 'new mmo' magic is gone for me, and honestly that's the only thing ffxiv had going for it that first week i tried to enjoy the game.

I guess my point is, you KNOW that nothing has changed when you log in, so why are you still logging in? Clearly nothing they have done has changed your opinion so why not just stop playing until they actually fix the game rather than say you waisted money.

But if i don't log in, how will i know when the game is fixed? Conundrum. :<

But really, the most i play is usually after an update. I trick myself into thinking "oh, it was just the terrible market system that kept me from enjoying the game." Or "it was just the horrible UI that was the only thing needing a fix."

And then a couple hours later, i realize it was much more that is keeping me from feeling like i got my moneys worth.

Ah, I was about to comment about updates, but it appears that's what you do. If that's the case, I can see where you are coming from. For me personally, I can see the giant leaps this game has taken in the last month or so and while it's certainly nowhere near perfect, I'm willing to give it more time to get there. I am also almost physical level 46 and have logged COUNTLESS hours, so for me I have clearly gotten my money's worth. It's certainly interesting to see other perspectives on the matter.
