Ok just abit of back info on myself, i have been playing mmo's for 10 years and some change, i started with eq and have played just about everything just about up until know.

So i have a co worker that plays this game and he says it ok and they are doing better with it even though everyone i have talked to and everything i have read says its terrible but i give it the benefit of a doubt.

So i start a character lastnight (yes iam new and this is a perspective from someone that is new) and it goes ok, no real direction as to where to go or what to do from the start so i mill around click on people till i finally get a guy that tells me to run out to the first area. So i head out there, knowing he gave me a "quest" to go kill some rats, well i go out there and run around for an hour looking for those "rats" and i dont see any, so i give up and just start killing anything that moves. I finally get bored and roll a new character, at this time i did not know that you could play all class's with one character, so i start another one and i get the quest again and head out there and accidently click something right and the "quest" starts and my mini map lights up with a direction and such. So that goes so so and iam liking it abit.

So today i get home from work early and i log in ready to go. Well find a link shell with some nice people that endure my many questions. So iam back at the original guy running around click again and i find someone that gives out more "quests" so cool i grab them and head out to the little area again, i know now what to do since my blunder last night, so i complete the "quests" and then i find out afterwards i cant turn them in for 36 hours or something.

So that was my first frustration tonight, then i got to looking at the mechanics of the game. I mean really, to change an item out on my character i have to click the menu (or whatever its called), then click gear then click the slot i want to turn out, then a list of items for the slot show up (which i dont need because i know what i want to put there) so then i have to click the item in the list just to change 1 piece of gear out. When all i should have to do is open my inventory (going through the many clicks described above) and the item should swap out and iam good, but not thats not possible.

The more i look at this game the more i can see why not many people are playing it, iam not looking for wow, which i hate, but come on this is 2010 this shoudl be basic stuff, heck eq had it back in the start of all this (yes i know uo was there first :) )

The game is visually stunning ill give it that and it runs very well on my machine and the idea of being able to play all the class's as far as i know on one character is really nice but why do they have to put all this extra crud on it, its like taking a pile of manure and dropping it ontop of a beautifull rose, turns it to **** and thats how i feal about this game at the moment.

Even the combat so far is clunky, when i click on an icon to nuke something i shouldnt have to decide right then in combat if i want it to be an AE attack then click the mob again that i was originally targeting before i click the nuke in the first place. I will say pugilist was alot of fun for me i might switch to it but i dont know right now.

Sorry iam just venting some frustration, i thought i was going to enjoy this game but after tonight iam not too sure that will be the case.

Please be gentle :)

Yeah if you haven't played FFXI before, this game is going to be very unintuitive for you. It scares off a lot of new players.

I'll be gentle. Had you read when you started the game, it tells you exactly where to go and what to do, so you didn't have any direction because you didn't read. As for the gear, I wish the game just knows what i wanna equip and does it on its own without me even so much as opening a menu. I agree though, the process involved is a little long (not really, but I'll bite, its longer than most games i guess), but in the next update they have plenty of UI improvements which include drag and drop and whatever else, so i would wait and see what its like then. Now, I don't understand exactly the point of this topic...are you here to tell us there are some questionable design choices with this game? if so, I think almost everyone here will agree with you. Thanks for stopping by :).

Nice attitude to start off. /sigh

The game, at the base, was designed to be played with a gamepad. Some of the functionality we're used to with keyboard and mouse aren't included because that wouldn't help much with a controller. They're getting better, as your friend have said, and making the mouse slightly less cumbersome; it still "reeks" of console design.

Since I prefer gaming on console and hate PC games' UI with a burning passion, I suppose I don't understand when people complain about FFXI and FFXIV's interface. I find that everything I need is always only a couple of clicks away, and the rest of the time, I have a screen almost free of any G.U.I. elements.

I can only hope FFXIV will grow on you. Have fun in your journeys, and remember, asking for advice is always free.

I would have to agree with a lot of things you had to say about the game, though for the opening section, yes, if you read what the NPC's are talking about, they will mostly tell you exactly what to do.

As for the UI in this game, it is, how do I say it nicely, deficient. SE does have some bad UI's in previous games, so it doesn't really bother me that much.

If you can overcome the obversion to the games UI, you will find what has kept SE a popular company all these years, despite some bad design flaws in their games, it's the story. If you just want to run around doing quests, and killing things ect ect (not saying you do, or that there is anything wrong with those that do enjoy that) this may not be the game for you. Most (if not all) of SE's games are story driven, and the only real thing that will draw you into their games.

sorry for any poor grammer, late night for me :P

Couldn't have said it better myself. It really irritates me when people complain about having no direction in a game when they haven't actually done anything yet. Not only is the intro a tutorial in combat, but it leads directly into the first proper quest you'll receive which shows you around, gives you the lowdown on crafting and even starts you off with a little pocket money.

Its not the games fault if you can't be bothered to read what's going on.

Just curious, but what are you "just curious" about? I am not sure if you are asking a question or just want some general responses to your frustration. I will attempt to address the latter.

I will admit I am a bit of a fanboy when it comes to the FF series, so I am a bit biased, but even I will admit that this game has a steep learning curve. I still remember playing FFXI for the first time and running around getting slaughtered every five minutes, and being absolutely clueless during my first group/party. Luckily my FFXI experience on top of reading everything there was available about the game before it even came out helped me jump right in.

On the other hand, I tend to disagree about equipping gear. Ya its not a simple open one window and click one thing process, but it is unique and really not that hard. I like clicking on a gear slot and having the game sort my inventory for me and show the available pieces of gear that are appropriate for that particular slot. I hated on WoW that I had to open my inventory and sift through the whole thing to find the piece of gear I wanted based on an ambiguous picture (granted I was never that organized and it could have been easier if I had sorted my inventory better).

As far as combat goes I have never been into the casting classes, so I have never cared for the mechanics of casting. However, I find the melee classes a blast, especially in this game. I personally love how position, movement, and timing all are incorporated and its not just a matter of hitting an auto attack button followed by the occasional special ability (although I know there are many that would disagree because of the lack of ability to communicate during combat).

Finally, I personally feel this game has huge potential with a lot of room to grow. While this could be just speculation there are some reasons for thinking this. For one thing, the FF series is always known for having a great story line, and a lot of the recent changes have improved the game tremendously.

Well I have rambled enough, if you ever need help or have questions look me up and I would be happy to help. My main is Kaynel Daermon on the Mysidia server.

p.s. I do strongly dislike not having an AH. That's my only big complaint about the game.

Read the 2011 version update (probably coming late January, early February):
http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/topics/detail?id=cb4dc09784bc24b4fde2e45de9f018ec5fb504d2

If you like what you see then the game gets better - everything they mentioned in the column on the left they have fulfilled on time, so I'm really optimistic for the game's future - for the time being, try and get a head start on the noob influx coming with PS3 launch or take a break until the next update hits shore and see where you sit at with the game.
