Hello all,

I've been using an older Viewsonic 4:3 19" monitor for a few years now. It's starting to behave oddly, losing signal and I have to use voodoo it get video back (I've run the gamut on this thing, two PCs with different video cards, multiple settings, etc--so this isn't a "fix my monitor thread"). I'm looking at picking up a new widescreen monitor and it's been ages since I've paid attention to the ups and downs of the display industry. The last widescreen I used (at work, but very nice) was a Samsung 20" wide, but I'm thinking of bumping that up to a 22" or so.

I don't think refresh rate is an issue anymore, but I like a snappy/crisp looking monitor as much as the next guy/gal. I think my price range might be anything up to $300USD, so that should give people room to suggest a decent piece of equipment. I play FPSes, MMOs and RTSes mainly and I've got a nVidia 460GTX 1GB card, just for reference. Ergonomics aren't really a concern, but tilt might be a good thing to have (or maybe not since my wife loves to jack with my screen^^). Otherwise I'm a single monitor man with the need of some more realestate and a monitor that won't go black on me randomly.

I don't really have brand loyalty, but I've had good experiences with Samsung models as well as Viewsonic (up until this sucker started acting up). What have you folks had good experiences with?

Front page of Newegg has this for sale.

This is the monitor I was thinking of originally and would personally prefer, which is also on sale (and is very well reviewed).

16:9 monitors are crap. I'm not sure about the overall market, but where I live there are virtually no new 16:10 monitors anymore. At the moment I'm using a syncmaster T220, samsung's. The color fidely on this 16:10 puppy is huge (multimedia designer here).

If you can get a 16:10, I'd go with that. I bought two 16:9 LEDs and hated them. Use your TV for movies, and your PC for browsing and gaming.

I have two HannsG 28" and my entire team has them at work... probably 8 more. They are all great and we've never had any issues with them. Looks like they have a new model....

For ~$300 you can't really beat it for the size. Oh and its 16:10 which is bonus.

I purchased a Samsung SyncMaster XL2370 - 23" 16:9 LED monitor for christmas. Very happy with it, the dark shadowy areas are actually dark and the colours are nice and crisp. Cost me $A350.

I also agree with Mitsudo Moe! I bought the Samsung SyncMaster PX2370 and I think it's awesome...granted I bought it for a very pre-Christmas present a couple months ago, but I love it, haha.

That might be a bit over the top for my office. I'd have to sit in the hallway. ^^

Lots of great ideas out there. I hate monitor purchasing, it's a very subjective field and you can barely go by feedback based solely on what seems a general lack of consistency (it's great! it has 4 dead pixels! two weeks after I bought it has a pink vertical line in the middle! it's great!)

I am of a mind to get a 16:10 monitor methinks, thankfully they're rare or astronomically priced. ;_;

I got this monitor ASUS MS236H. I'm happy with it and anything bigger are pretty much overkill for me.
