First, a big thanks to Magnesium02 for posting the names of the various Coblyns/Doblyns. I spent some time to expand his post and list the locations for Coblyns of various level ranges.

Second, as many have stated, Coblyns are not the end-all mob for the best SP gains. However, if you are looking for Ore drops or perhaps just enjoy watching this quirky monster model while grinding away, you may find the following information useful.

Screenshot
Eorzea's Coblyns Locations:

Rank: 5-9
Name: Copper Coblyn
Location: Eastern Thanalan (by Black Brush)

Rank: 10-14
Name: Copper Coblyn
Locations: Eastern Thanalan (by Drybone) + Central Black Shroud (South of Gridania)

Rank: 15-19
Name: Lead Coblyn
Location: Western Thanalan
The area southeast of Camp Horizon has a decent mob density from (16 east, 31 south) to (15 east, 33 south).

Rank: 23-28
Name: Iron Coblyn
Location: Nanawa Mines (Thanalan @ 27 east, 20 south)

Rank: 30-34
Name: Iron Coblyn
Location: Nanawa Mines (Thanalan @ 27 east, 20 south)

Rank: 40-44
Name: Peridot Doblyn
Location: Copperbell Mines (Thanalan @ 19 east, 29 south)

Rank: 40-44
Name: Quartz Doblyn
Location: Southern Thanalan - (Far South of Camp Drybone, on approach to Camp Broken Water @ 43 east, 40 south)

Rank: 45-49
Name: Quartz Doblyn
Location: Southern Thanalan

Rank: 50-54
Name: Sphene Doblyn
Location: Western Thanalan / Northern Thanalan (Near tunnel leading to the Ferry @ 8 east, 28 south) Thanks Pulseczar.

Rank: 55-59
Name: Sphene Doblyn
Location: Central Thanalan / Southern Thanalan

Battlecraft Leves:

Rank 1 - Ul'dah - “Clearing Black Brush”
Mob ranks: 5-13
Mob name: Corroded Coblyn

Rank 10 - Ul’dah - “Culling all Coblyns”
Mob ranks: 10-26
Mob Name: Cavernulous Coblyn

Rank 30 - Ul'dah - "Necrologos: Adamantine Wills"
Location: Nanawa Mines
Mob Name: Chitinous Coblyn

Rank 40 - Ul’dah - “A Devilet’s Best Friend”
Mob ranks: 30-54
Mob Name: Chitinous Coblyn

If anyone has additional info on the Diaphanous Doblyn I would be happy to add it here.

Also, DoctorMog mentioned using Incapacitation to break off a coblyn's armored back:

DoctorMog wrote:

Using Luminious Spire (Sword), Pounce (Hand-to-Hand), or Trunksplitter II (Axe) while attacking a mob from the rear will eventually break off a Coblyn’s back armor without a Battle Regimen.

These skills can also be used on the second hit of a Battle Regimen for a 50% bonus to damage. This will deplete the HP of the back armor faster. Many players have observed that Incapacitating enemies can increase item drop rates.

Final note, all coblyns listed above are Earth element.

I made this list for my own use and I hope other players find it useful as well.

I'm having a really hard time actually finding the Sphene ones in game. I've only found a few north of Camp Horizon in the depths.

How would you feel about me putting this in the wiki, giving you full credit as well as a link back to this thread. You might even be able to do it yourself, but if you don't want to mess with wiki syntax I would be happy to help.

That would be great! I am not very familiar with making Wiki pages.

I was hoping some of the players that have more specific coblyn location (coordinates) would post here to help posters like RedGalka find the mobs where the locations are vague. Can the Wiki be updated if new info comes in?

Thanks Wint!

A great sphene doblyn camp is at Horizon's edge — right before you go in the tunnel for the ferry.

It only has room for maybe 1 or 2 players.

I think you have the level range wrong for these locations. I used both to go from copperbell from 33-35 and Thanalan from 35-40.

Rank: 32-40(40-44)
Name: Peridot Doblyn
Location: Copperbell Mines (Thanalan @ 19 east, 29 south)

Rank: 35-40+(40-44)
Name: Quartz Doblyn
Location: Southern Thanalan - (Far South of Camp Drybone, on approach to Camp Broken Water @ 43 east, 40 south)

I would say this is about right.

Wondering about Nanawa mines ... at rank 30 I fought maybe 1/0 that were yellow, rest were blue/green.

r31+ they are all blue (how many levels below you are blue?)

Doc, could you help me understand that chart a bit better? If understand correctly, using Luminious Spire (Sword), Pounce (Hand-to-Hand), or Trunksplitter II (Axe) will all break off a Coblyn’s back without a Battle Regiment. True?

Gladly,

You are right, the skills you listed; Luminous Spire (Sword), Pounce (Hand-to-Hand), or Trunksplitter II (Axe). Will hit the "rear" of a monster. You do not need to use these in a regimen to accomplish breaking off their shells/tails/rear. Simply get behind the monster and use the skill when you have sufficient TP.

Monsters that have Tails, Shells, and other various "behind" parts, can be broken by simply using those skills from behind the monster. Doing this solo is tough, but I made a video that I think is what you are referencing that shows how you can hit them from behind by yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-BiqdxRg5Q

Using the skills that incapacitate a monster in a regimen increase their effectiveness because if the skill is used 2nd, it gains a 50% increase in the damage it does when the regimen hits.

Monsters have a HP pool for their body parts. Say for instance a coblyn has 1000HP. In order to break off the back, you need to do 600 damage from the rear with a skill that incapacitates the rear in order to break the shell. This might take a few weaponskills to do, so if you don't incap them on the 1st weaponskill, keep trying.

Incapacitation also increases droprate on some items.

Thank you for the reference in your post <3

I'm pretty sure that 40-44 is accurate, if Rufus pulled from other site's info. This rank however corresponds to the *rank of the mob*, not the rank at which the mob can be defeated.

Deciding at what level you combat these various cobylns should include a number factors, the most important being proper gear and your physical level. Taking down cobylns 10 ranks above you at PL50 with gear optimal to your rank shouldn't be an issue. Attempting that at PL30 wearing an Iron Celata as a Conjurer.. well, that's a different story.

EDIT: various grammatical errors

By the time you broke the back of a Coblyn(if he didn't AoE and broke his back by himself) he will be either dead, or will die after one hit, so no point in "complicating" things, if all you need to do is zerg him down.

Untrue. Too many people think zerging is effective, but it isn't always, and coblyns are not an exception.

Wish I could help. I was just wondering. If your graphics really were that bad I was going to marvel at your insane dedication to the game. I find that youtube can really make a nice video look terrible... but I am not good at video editing.

Didn't watch this particular video, but did some of the others. Not sure if it applies here, but putting the youtube settings to 1080p it looks fine.

Is there a list of monster's that may be incapped and the visible effect that occurs? I'm sure if we spread the word people wouldn't be so adamant about hitting 1-1-1-1 all the time and would see there is at least a little depth in the battle system.

I really don't get coblyns, at least not at my current rank. Opos, Marmots, and Puks in Mun-Tuy give roughly the same SP per kill, go down just as fast, and are grouped closer together with no competition.... thus theoretically providing more SP per hour for the same effort.

I've only solo'd them though so maybe it's different in a party...

Thanks for the spawn list though

Just killed my first Sphene Doblyn in Central Than at Archer 25.

Guess how much SP I got 150.
How much EXP? 375.

SP based on challenge isn't fair. Oh well back to Irons for me!

When on my way to the ship I passed the Sphene Doblyns many times. At 43 they usually conned green and yellow to me so I assume that they are level 42-44 maybe.

Yes, these show up as blue in Nanawa, but I get 60-70SP at Rank 33/34, and die after a few hits on Pug. In the right place you can kill these so fast it is a very viable solo'ing location. I have spent quite a bit of time here and its less dangerous than copperbell. Now I just use it to polish off a rank when I am 5-10k from leveling after behest/leve fun-time-party-land.

South Thanalan, near broken water used to have a lot more before the patch that introduced the scorp type mobs, and diremites which aggro. The problem I have there is I can kill 2 or 3, then run into a tough red one who is way harder and smacks me to 400-500 damage per hit, and their lil' AOE spray that I have never really seen before, yech. If I do win, is it really worth 30 more SP than Nanawa for a fight that takes twice as long?

/Cheers, RP.
