I am writing this thread to question if the game is making a turn around for the better. Will it be something like FFXI as far as game play and longevity? I felt I would not install it yet as they still had a bunch of bugs to work out just to make the game playable. I did play on beta and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I am also asking about how is it for someone whose day involves 12+hours of reading and note taking with sparse breaks in between. Is the game setup for someone to pop in do a bit of fishing/leveling then move on?

Thanks so much for any input.

I can tell you now this thread is going to devolve into something despicable, however, I would have to say the game has greatly improved in comparison to release and I believe it will simply keep getting better. Having said that, the game is fairly devoid of content save for the guild leves, regular partying / grinding, and the Notorious Monsters for higher level players to poke their sticks at. The new producer whose taken charge of the team is supposed to be releasing a statement today if I'm not mistaken, or sometime early this month, so I'm sure people are looking forward to seeing what his plans are for the upcoming year. But honestly, I don't think anyone here will give you an unbiased opinion. You can either take the box back for a refund and play other games until you feel more confident about the status of FFXIV, or you can install play, and see if you enjoy it since the game, aside from the cost of the box, is free until further notice.

well, if you have any option of doing so, I'd return it and then buy a much cheaper regular edition.

If not, you may as well open it up and see what its all about.

If you enjoyed you're time in Beta on this game then I'm 99% sure you'll also enjoy it in it's current state as a lot of improvements have been added to it.

In regards to being able to play just for a few minutes and feel that you have done something worth while this is a bit subjective but there is a thread on this same forum that adresses that issue. Myself I think this is indeed casual friwendly as you can finish a Guildleve (Quest) in 15 minutes or less.

the game is much improved in the last few patches and the game is easy to dip into for short bursts if you want to.

To the OP: If it's not a US version, the CE comes with a cup that is pretty cool.

Actually, the cup is terrible. Absolutely horrible. I'll buy it off of you to save you from it.

If it's a US version, then ignore that bit.

In terms of being able to hop on for a bit... I will quote myself:

Olorinus the Vile wrote:
I just got back from my lunch break.

AFTER walking home I did a cooking leve, a carpentry leve, an easy R20 leve as THM (for gil) and a really tough R20 dodo leve as a R13/14 PUG (I ranked up) for marks.

Granted, I did bike back to work a tiny bit late... but the fact I can make 30K+, get a bunch of shards, get a rank, and get some marks on a lunch break... is pretty frigging casual.

It is very unsimilar to FFXI gameplay but experience in FFXI makes playing FFXIV easier because there are SOME similarities. I do not question that this game will last at least 2 years minimum. Longevity = yes.

Big bugs are worked out for the most part. The game is playable given 2 things: GOOD PC and the natural ability to ENJOY the game without forcing it.

The game is BEST for busy people. It is setup exactly for the purpose that you mention.

TRUFAX. There are two types of people that have the worst trouble for this game:

1) People who play more than 4 hours a day every day who want structured play (quests and missions)
2) People who play for less than 3 hours a day who want to get to level cap in 2 months.

The people who enjoy this game the most:

1) Play in short bursts between doing other things (as long as they don't expect to get to level cap quickly).
2) People who play for more than 4 hours a day and like playing in a sandbox.
3) People who play every two or three days for 2-6 hours at a time with an active linkshell whether they like quests or sandbox (because the repeatable quests are on a 1.5 day timer)

These are generalizations - but as long as you don't expect anything this game isn't going to deliver (like LOTRO style play with an NPC holding your hand every two steps or something) you will be fine.

For someone with a full time job and other life commitments the quest style is pretty ace. I find I can't even get all my leves done each reset. (Although partially because I choose to do other things like duo with friends/fish etc.)

Also I suggest if you do start playing - choose a linkshell first if possible. This game is infinitely better with a linkshell - and the cool thing is linkshells are stored outside the inventory (unlike XI... lol you may know all this from beta, but whatever) and you can listen to them all at the same time, but just talk in the one you have active. The server forums on this site (and probably others) have a fair number of recruitment threads.

If you really enjoyed the beta then you should play retail. The retail version is much much better. As far as not having much free time to play, that works out perfect for the ammount of instant content(leves) the game has right now.

Sad to say but at the current level of content I believe a "hardcore" player could cap every job at 50 and do every leve and kill every NM in under 6 months.. a year or two for a casual.

U have 3 alts <dont ask me why> and have r40~ jobs on each at least 1 a highlander mrd 47 a miqo'te archer/bot/wood r40~ and a taru conj/thm 40+

If I were to have all this on 1 character id have at least 3-4 jobs at 50 and be extremely bored. I have separate characters cause I hate waiting 30 minutes to be able to reallocate a mere 20ish points thus having to wait several hours til I can reallocate enough to change from crafting to a DoW/ DoM

If this is what you're looking for I'm sure you will find it.. the game gives no pressure at all, I feel very relaxed while playing it.. and that, for me at least, is a good thing..

Sounds like you'll be fine, then.

Wow, Thanks a lot for the great remarks! As always the Final Fantasy community has really shown to be a great bunch of people one can turn to.

Mikhalia - It's a US version :| sorry. I would have considered your plan had it come with the cup :P.

Olorinus - Heh, your first post is basically how it would go for m here pop in do a quick leve, a little cooking... out to reading writing.

Again, Thanks a lot gang I do appreciate all your input.
