You forget to mention though, that the majority of these methods of travel in FFXI weren't available to you until you did a quest, or were a certain rank, or spent the time to run there first to begin with....in short, to have ALL of the travel options available to you in FFXI takes a ridiculous amount of play time.

Indeed.

You need to reach each of the crags and get the crystal to be able to get teleported there.
You need to do a supply quest to each of the outposts if you want to teleport there (on top of that the zone the outpost is needs to be under your Nation control or else you can't do the supply quest, and in some areas you needed you be of certain level to be able to teleport there).
At level 20 you get the chance to get your chocobo license, you have to get to Jeuno on foot, as a level 20 or so, fun times oh yea ^^
You need to get 3 keys from 3 different areas for a quest to get your first Airship Pass to Kazham (those 3 areas are far away from each other, lots of running).
You need to be Rank 4 in your home nation to be able to get the Airship Pass.
To be able to cast teleport you need to be WHM of level 36+
For warp yourself, you need BLM level 17, to be able to warp others with the warp II spell you need to be BLM level 40.

Yes, it takes a very considerable amount of time to do all of the above.

And yet, you didn't need most of them at lowbie levels. For me it was very gradual, moving up in levels almost casually unlocked the new means of transportation.

FFXI progressed fairly nicely in terms of travel. As you leveled naturally, better methods of transportation started opening up. FFXIV started with a very quick system of travel but a very restricted one and that's still all that's available. Hate to beat a dead horse but it's worth saying: SE should have learned from FFXI, they shouldn't be making the same (or even more!) mistakes all over again with their second MMO.

Looking back now, some people may remember this as fun.

I remember clearly that is was not fun. Let's not point to FFXI as an example of how to do travel. Travel was slow and tedious at every level. Even Chocobo travel took along time, airships twice as long.

No matter where you were headed, even if you had EVERY one of the options available, it was going to take you 10~30 minutes to get there. I had every tele on WHM, BLM warps, and every outpost. Still, Boyhada Tree party was going to be 30~45 mins to get setup minimum and that was a fact.

There is really nothing fast about an airship. Get to dock, wait, board, wait, get a snack, come back, nope not yet.

Anima is far superior in terms of time.

OP, I NEVER had patience for travel. I was always concious about how much time I spent NOT playing FFXI.

It's true, there were (eventually) alot of travel options available in FFXI, and FFXIV could surely benefit from the addition of Chocobos and Airships as alternative methods of travel. That said, instant travel is simply an absolute necessity for an MMO as far as I'm concerned.

I have never been a fan of instant travel. The fun is in the journey I guess is the best way to describe the way I feel about it.

in the case of 11, I would set my homepoint where I wanted to party, then go where ever I wanted until it was time to party again. And for the most part people picked areas where parties where easy to assemble, and were close. Many times we assembled, and left as a group, so if a person needed replacing, you could either pick someone near-by, or you could just fight a man down until the new person arrived (or the person leaving would wait for the new person). Either way, the party was more interactive and engaged.

14 lacks the party mechanics necessary for party adds (great in what 11 lacks, but lacks what 11 was good at).

Overall, the need for some form of rapid travel (teleports/airships/chocobos) are desperately needed, instant teleport is a joke and insulting imho. If instant teleport were really where we need to go, it will be a sad day when the best MMO is simply back to the old school dungeon crawls (which they seem to be headed towards), where you just bounce from dungeon to dungeon and fight whatever to get the latest and greatest sparkly.

I don't expect instant teleports to whatever I am going to do, because I do understand you need players to travel through the world and discover things they otherwise wouldn't. But I'm a huge fan of fast traveling from very early points in the game, because like most features that come across as chores, I want them to take as little time as possible so I can spend more time actually playing the game.
