If so, its an impressive failure. You do realize that Star Wars Galaxies.. an MMO that was out nearly a decade before FF14, had even more realistic looking characters and insanely more animations/emotes/etc? [/sm][/i]

i'm not sure what relevance that fact has to anything, aside from your own nostalgia.

an impressive failure. that's a pretty foolish thing to say. I watched the SWG vids and sure, they have some great animations. So?

Are they better than ffxiv's? i guess. Who cares. Either way it looks like crap in practice. I watched a pvp jedi duel and it was the most boring thing ever. The two PCs weren't remotely close to one another. I didn't even know they were fighting at first. I thought they were both showing off moves for each other. Oh wait i guess they are fighting. that guy keeps falling down while that other guy spams the same move.

meh. Try comparing ffxiv's animations to a game that is actually successful and on the market.

If nothing else, it proves that a game that look good isn't safe from dying off if the game itself isn't worth playing to most people.

sure, which is kind of sad. because from what i hear of SWG, i probably would have been one of those people who loved it. it sounded like a great niche game. wish there were more of those. Not every game has to appeal to every gamer! Stop doing this! It makes your games worse in the long run!

in the case of xiv, its less sad. because the game i have gotten used to is nothing special really. if they ***** it up more while trying to fix it, so be it.

The thing that killed SWG was the abolishing of the one thing that made the game unique... the rarity of the Jedi class and the fact that whether you could be one or not was determined before you were done creating your character. In a time period of the story where there were historically very few Jedi in the universe, there WERE very few Jedi in the universe.

Once they opened the floodgates and everyone could be a Jedi, the allure was lost almost instantly, because being a Jedi in a universe of very few Jedi is suddenly a lot less exciting if everyone else is also a Jedi.

Massive changes to a game like that can either revive a game or seal its tomb. In this case, it was the latter. I'm praying FFXIV doesn't end up with the same fate.

yeah i've watched enough gamebreaker.tv to know most of the tragic history behind SWG. i love the idea of it being difficult to access the jedi class. Design decisions like that seem "unbalanced" on paper, but in practice it makes the game more fun imo. "dude that guild has a ******* Jedi, leave them alone!"

While we're on the topic of other games, I wish they'd make a Marvel Universe Online. I like DC, but their powers are so limited in comparison to Marvel's. Plus the MU is more interesting to me.

Honestly though, if DCU let you choose if you wanted to be a Green Lantern, a Kryptonian or whatever else, I'd probably try it out at least.

Yeah, Batman and Sodam Yat/Ion are the only DC characters I like.

Plus I'd imagine DCU's final boss would be someone lame like Superboy Prime or something. Marvel's would be Mad Jim Jaspers.

First of all a lot of copy and paste comes into play, because of the amazing graphics, the majority of hard drives wouldn't be able to support all the data if they didn't use this method.

Second i think a vast amount of the never ending "development time" was used playing tug-a-war with the games direction aka SE Procrastinated and created a heaping pile of visually beautiful ****

Seriously, if they jiggled...how much fighting/crafting would you actually do?

I know that the lack of a jump feature would suddenly seem like a much bigger problem with the game!

Technically, one could argue that the form factor contributes to aerodynamics and the material contributes to weight, which can affect MPG as well as safety depending upon where the center of gravity is located.

Splitting hairs, but you could.

WoW could use more menus. Not for any real reason, mind you; just to encumber the interface.

Actually they do jiggle. I first noticed this the other day when my female midlander threw her arms apart while implementing a crafting buff. She was wearing a pink canvas coatee (the one where it looks like her ******* are about to fall out .... very **** piece of clothing). I originally thought I might be imagining things but then i noticed it happened again and again.

Anyhow, apart from my perversions, I do think that the character animations are absolutely fantastic. Notice how your character's fingers move to manipulate a crafting tool, for instance. Or notice how your chaacter gives a little hitch as he/she tries to romove his/her hatchet from a tree. Despite what someone said above, there is no game in the world that has this degree of detail. If he/she thinks there is, s/he just hasn't been paying close enough attention.

Personally? I'd kill for XIV's UI in other games. The main menu is *genius* and I love it. It feels like it flows with a next-gen game. The UI is comfortable, granted it was terrible in the beta, as it lagged to ****, but since then it has worked out for them.

Therefore, I have to assume that it took them 6 years to make the main menu.

But on a serious note; With the new development team holding the reigns, I have a much higher hope for the game as a whole, but it's still not well off. It needs major revisions, it needs major content added, and they need to do it for free.

I'm impressed that Square actually took the road of admitting that they messed up, and will be making the game free-to-play until they feel the game is of Square Enix quality, that shows devotion(on top of the fact that XI is still a lottery win every month..)
