In my opinion what makes me into the world that I'm playing in an MMO are three things, the community, the graphics and the music. Al though FFXI soundtrack kinda sucked, I'm loving the battle music and zone music in FFXIV. Here is the link for the new Chocobo theme! Check it out!

Final Fantasy has lost its soul in its music ever since Nobuo Umeatsu left Square now its just repetive and sometimes plain deperessing.

But Uematsu scored the entire XIV soundtrack?

Inoite? I can't believe they hired some jackass named Nobuo Uematsu to do the music for XIV when they could have wowed us and brought back Nobuo Uematsu...

XI music wasn't so bad. I was just rocking out to the Gustaberg theme. If a person can still enjoy music after years of hearing it, that means it's quality music.

Plus, music for an MMO is different than other games as it needs to be more subtle due to the length and repetition a player experiences it.

You do realize that Nobuo Umeatsu scored the entire FFXIV soundtrack, right?

It's the classic Marlboro commercial song! Well at least here in Brazil.

The problem with FFXI, is that it was a victim of age. Back in the year 2000, while the OST was being concieved, the range of synth equipment was still basic. The problem is, when they decided "okay the game will sound like this" they had to stick to that style throughout the entire lifetime of the game. Even the synth equipment is far better, and more realistic now.

The one expection to that rule, appears to be in the final boss battle pieces for each expansion. Most people will agree they sound way better then any normal piece in game, and my theory is, that's simply because Mizuta was free to do whatever he wanted. Notice there's way more substance, more style and way more instruments being used at one time. And it gets progressively better throughout the years.

Rise of the Zilart - (2003)
Chains of Promathia - (2004)
Treasures of Aht Urgahn - (2006)
Wings of the Goddess - (2007)
(Okay I have these sneaking suspicion the actual boss music wasn't actually composed by Naoki, because it really wasn't great, but the ending piece definately has his style)
ACP--MKE--ASA(2009)
Heroes of Abyssea (2010) Just compare the substance of this one to the RoTZ one, the difference is insane...

The problem I feel with FFXIV's OST, is not how Uematsu uses old style synth or anything like that, my problem is that most tracks are just so incredibly short. Just look at the Black Shroud...
I wish we could have the substance of Mizuta and the charm of Uematsu really...

Glad to see some people understand this. These days anyone with a decent audio interface, a midi controller and some VSTs installed can make music with the quality of a movie soundtrack at home. but personally i thought FFXI had a better soundtrack for an mmorpg. And that says alot since Uematsu is probably my biggest influence musically.
