Best Method of Resisting Magical Attacks?Follow

This has been an ongoing topic I’ve had in the game. As a tank, I can absorb physical attacks and special moves without concern. However, the big elemental attacks (think Raptor Breath, Pieste Breath) are the heavy hitters I need to mitigate. I’d like to get fairly technical in this thread, so before any input, I understand:

-Raising the opposing element should increase your resistance

-Raising MND should reduce magical damage

-Magical defense should reduce magical damage

-Piety increases the chance to fully resist but barely contributes

However, after boosting WIND ELEMENT (opposes FIRE) to 170, I still get hit for 1000 from Raptor Breath. Between 40 WATER ELEMENT (opposes EARTH) and 160 WATER ELEMENT, Peiste Breath still hits me for 1000. Is it just me or does the elemental resistance mean almost nothing?

Furthermore, I tried boosting MND from 16 to 100 and equipping +21 MND jewelry and still get hit for 1000 Peiste Breath. I’ve read that DoM who have boosted MND to 140 get hit for almost identical to DoW with no points in MND. Does nothing really matter when it comes to resisting these attacks? I haven’t had the chance to experiment with Magical Defense yet which I plan to do soon.

I thought raising an element helped your defense of THAT element... (i.e. Raising my Fire will reduce fire damage, or at least increase my % rate of resists and resist amount potentially)

#3Mistress Theonehio, Posted: Jan 12 2011 at 4:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Iirc breath attacks were changed to always do..a lot of damage regardless after a recent update, whether intentional or a bug, since protect/shell were apparently also a little less effective than usual.

The element stats were mostly for specific crystal/shard drops while gathering.

False they affect A LOT more than mere crystal drops.

Raise opposing element for doing damage.
Same element to resist.
+MND
Most spells and tp attacks can either be stunned, silenced, stopped through paralysis, or just plain physically avoided by moving your character

Magic defense is the most convenient thing that I've found to make any significant different.

They may effect more, but as we know stats in general are still iffy especially with very little testing done, but it was noted specifically to have a greater impact on gathering and crafting:

Quote:
The Effect of Player Status on Crafting & Gathering
A player’s physical and elemental statuses greatly affect crafting and gathering. There are many hints within the game that reveal which statuses affect which aspects.

[ Crafting]
Attributes: Works in conjunction with the type of tool used to affect synthesis quality
Elemental: Affects the occurrence rate of “god sends,” as well as synthesis stability

[ Gathering]
Physical: Affects the number of items harvested, as well as the drop rate
Elemental: Affects the type of crystals that can be obtained during gathering

Since it's more obvious towards these than it is in battle at times.

This is just speculation, but in XI breath attacks were always modified by the HP% of the mob. That being said elemental resistance did play some role in resisting the attacks. I have yet to fight either mob, yet because my levels are too low, so unable to test/verify.

There was another post on Lodestone after the one you're citing, but I'm too lazy to find the link.

Element attribute allocation increases your defense in the OPPOSITE element. I'm also too lazy to link the Astral/Umbral triangles. Search it on lodestone...

The only things that increase your *resistance* to elemental damage are attribute allocations and +Elemental Resist gear.

MND reduces damage but not increased resistance.

Elements
Increases damage dealt by attacks of that element
Reduces damage taken from attacks of the opposing element

Check up lodestone before sending links that shows wrong OR you can play the game and listen to the npcs, are you really level 50? By spamming water on my earth enemies i got an increased attack of almost 40% from testing, it works better than strength actually. This is on an archer.

Best method to resist magical attacks is not to be hit with them.

It would be nice if SE could include the resistances against physical and elemental damage (for every element) in the stat window in a percentage value. I'd like to see "Resistance against Fire Element: 38%" and such.

I've also tried increasing MND and PIE but didn't notice much of a difference.
My elements are distributed evenly. I didn't try pushing a specific element for defense yet.
I don't focus on magical defense yet, it's just a bonus if the gear I'm wearing got magical defense too.
Our best bet to defend against such attacks seems to be evading them by moving to another position if possible.

I think it's a matter of balancing. At the moment stats seem to have little effect compared to class rank. So there might be a bunch of hidden stats that improve when you rank up.

If I recall correctly, the breath attack damage is determined by HP% of the mob, and the breath attack BLUs had was light element.
