My Collector's Edition makes me sad.Follow

It was with great anticipation and enthusiasm that I pre-ordered and received the collector's edition in the mail last year. I was used to a slow updating and installation process from FFXI and FFXIV's beta version, so I was excited all the way up to the moment I got to actually play the game. I expected a lot to have changed since the beta, but we all know the story. I haven't played since the second week, and my subscription has been canceled.

Now the collector's edition sits in a closet among my other games, collecting dust. Today I searched for an old game and came across it again. It makes me sad. The box-art is great, I love the Final Fantasy series, I loved Final Fantasy XI -- it's such a disappointment that FFXIV doesn't deliver. I truly hope they add a lot of content in the next few months. Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I just too nostalgic?

its a bit of both. The days of Final fantasy games leading the pack in terms of quality and graphics are gone. But I'm also guilty of expecting too much. That doesn't mean they didn't release something well below standards, it just means the gap is that much worse because people like you and me held final fantasy the franchise up on a pedestal.

The plastic oversleeve that came with the collector's edition box provides my roommate's cat with hours of enjoyment pouncing and swatting and carrying on.

At least it's good for something :P

I never throw any game boxes out, ever, as far back as DOS and NES games. So even if FFXIV was canceled tomorrow, two copies of that CE box look good next to my Fallout NV CE, my Starcraft 2 CE, my Warcraft 3 CE, etc.

I'm a sucker for collector's editions some days. Throw in a bunch of extra **** like art books I'll probably never read and soundtracks I'll probably never open and I'll still gladly pay an extra $20-40 for it.

Put them one your shelf, and then you die; your remaining family throws them out, and they're melted down in a trash compactor...

now I'd better go "botanize" some trees before that becomes a suicide-note. XD

Just a quick question.

HOW do you MELT down ANYTHING in a trash COMPACTOR.

That is all.

Not if I can help it. I plan to bequeath my collection of boxes and my entire collection of games and consoles to someone I -know- won't throw them away. :)

My father was a packrat and as such I became one, I as well have lots of boxes, a lot of CE's as well (I'm a sucker for those, especially if they have artbooks). I ran outta room on my shelves for the boxes though XD

Well getting back on topic... I kind of share the same sentiment with the OP. Except it's with my security token.

I attached it to my key ring when I first got it and remember thinking how I'd need to keep my keys around all the time even while in the house from now on.

That lasted for a couple weeks. Now my keys are back to being dumped on the kitchen counter as soon as I walk in through the doors. However, from time to time, I find myself looking at the token thinking about what it once meant and debating whether I should take it off.

It's kind of silly, like someone refusing to take the wedding band off after a divorce. Even though I'm mostly convinced the game will never recover fully (past a nieche audience), in the back of my mind there's a (small) part of me that hopes that it still may.

For some reason this made me picture a mean green orc (Probably Hellscream Jr.) on a person's right shoulder screaming obscenities and talking bad about everything, while on the other shoulder there is a Lalafell/tarutaru (they look almost exactly the same) female child trying to be heard but never quite managing it due to the orc.

Edit..forgot he's not green. Guessing brown orc then <.<

I thought the notebook was the best item in the CE box. Well made and great artwork.
Far too good to write in though, it will sit in a bookshelf sandwiched between trashy novels.

My collectors editions make me happy. I love my map I love my tumbler, and I like both journals though one not as much as the other... And my right of passage is happily hidden in a folder in its box.

I think the game has tons of potential, and I really don't see SE letting it go without a massive fight.

Yeah, that's one thing I dislike about stuff like that; iron-ons, journals, stickers, etc... I never want to actually -use- them.

If you've ever played Fallout, you'd realize that he's actually a super mutant now.

Didn't the tumbler come with a note advising people to not actually drink anything with it? I remember someone posting about that way back at launch.

I didn't get it because I got the NA CE, but I have to say that I'd probably have ignored such a note.

It came with a warning label that is it not intended to contain any liquids, solids or air.

You aren't the only one OP. I could barely wait to get mine. I even took two days off work to play.

Now...haven't played it since October...and really have no desire to either.

Just can't even come close to describing how disappointed I was/am.

I raced to buy my copy the day it came out.

I'm a college student and I spent the last bit of money I had till my next pay cheque to get it. Now I've barely played. I started playing Archer and I'm around rank 10, but I have no desire to play because the game is so much less than what I was expecting.

Part of me wishes they just did a massive graphics update to XI, since that's basically where they put all their time with XIV.
