was wondering what peoples opinion is on having an alt to just craft on and one to level DoW and DoM jobs. i plan on at some point leveling all crafts and jobs but inventory and changing between all the mats needed for crafting and free slots when doing leves for drops and what not is a pain. with talk of a mailing system or even using retainers to transfer mats i don't see that part being an issue, but am i missing something as far as wanting DoL abilities on my charater that is going to be DoW and DoM? what do you think?

While I agree that managing inventory space might be difficult at times, having your crafts levelled on a DoM or DoW is still useful to some degree if only for the ability to repair your own damaged equipment. Repair costs get expensive at later ranks while the actual materials needed for the repairs are often quite cheap, so it's more cost effective. Furthermore, you can only get them repaired to 75% via NPC and you cannot repair jewellery such as rings or necklaces so you'd have to get another crafter to fix those for you.

Remember that currently we cannot sell or trade damaged items, only ask for repairs. It might be true that the same applies to sending items via the mail system as well, but only time will tell.

wouldn't it be possible to put damages items on my retainer for DoW DoM charter then log onto crafter and repair them since the retainer would still be there.

In my opinion you'd just be trading one pain for another. Yeah, you'd have more inventory space, but you'll have to deal with the hassle of the mail system, re-do certain quests, manage twice as many retainers, etc. Also, your combat classes would miss out on the physical exp your crafting earns, and vice versa. And yes, there are a few aggro avoidance abilities on DoH jobs that could be useful for DoW/M jobs.

I would think also that a big advantage of having the crafts lvld on the same character as your DoW/DoM jobs is that you can make your repairs on the go. You wouldn't have to worry about switching characters or getting to the market wards to put your stuff up for repairs for your other character or switching items around. That would not exactly be very easy right now with no ingame mail system.

I would just lvl it all on your one character. It would seem to cut down on the headaches.

yeah im starting to agree with everyone on this topic sounds nice at first but being able to repair gear out in the field sounds much better than going through a whole process maybe ill just do fishing/cooking or something on my alt to cut down on inventory for my main.

thanks for the input you all prolly saved me a lot of time logging back and forth

Making an alt, period, is pointless in basically every circumstance. Crafting alts would be a completely bad idea overall. If you do it all on one character, you will get a higher physical level and be able to repair your own stuff.

The only reason I could see in making 2 or more characters are the following:
-Having a DoM and a DoW class, stats are hard to change drastically as you get higher, this would let you play both classes more easily without having to change out stats completely.

-RP reasons, you like having a Gladiators tank that can do Armorsmithing. Or you like having a Conjurer that only does Botany or Fishes. It is up to you, but isn't really my cup of tea.

-More inventory space.

Beyond that, creating an alt is simply a poor choice for your characters development and advancement in the game.

Horrible idea--you need to be able to repair your stuff out in the field.

Hey Lucky I live in Hayward, about 20 minutes from you. Were you at the CoP launch party back in 2004/5 by any chance? It was at the Great Mall.

I didn't attend, but iirc I saw some pics of it years ago on the ZAM XI forums. Nice to know that there's some Bay Area FF11/14 players around :)
