If anyone has any information on how to get this item, please post here or send me a PM. Thanks. :3 (Not sure how often people actually leave comments on the item page so I thought i'd bring it up in general forum...)

As long as people are in the habbit of adding this information to the item pages after they are informed via forum threads, I don't think anyone will mind.

I know that grade 4 mining spots in Nophica's Wells have gold dust, but it is a pain to get unless you are in the high 30's+ mining.

Gold Ore/Sand, not Dust. The problem is that you can not produce Gold nugget by normal means yet, hence likely that the synth to create Gold Dust is absent.

Many things are absent or without use. Currently the only way to produce Gold nugget is HQ Yellow Copper Ore, hence it's likely there isn't a synth to create Gold Dust. For example Tier 4 Gems you can only get from HQ Colored Quartz and they serve no purpose.

HQ1 from converting Sea Pickle or Pipira into sand will yield Gold Sand (dust) using Secondary Tool as Culinarian.

Has anyone actually gotten some gold nuggets to attempt to see if there is indeed a synthesis for it yet?

Yes, can not grind Gold Nugget to Dust.

Grade 4 mining spots, particularly Nophica's Wells and Humblehearth. They are very rare and almost impossible to mine when you do find them unless you are rank 30+ with 70+ gathering. Grade 5 spots are more plentiful.

Edit: Confused gold dust with gold sand. Not sure where dust is harvested from or what its recipe is.

In regards to the ores, sands and dusts:

Mining low grade => Copper Ore
Copper Ore -> Copper Nuggets (also used in brass and bronze)

Copper Dust = Copper Nuggets @ Alchemy
Copper Dust -> Green Glass Lens

Mining mid grade => Silver Ore
Mining mid grade => Silver Sand
Silver Ore -> Silver Nuggets (also used in electrum)
Silver Sand -> Silver Nuggets (also used in electrum)

Silver Dust = drop from puddings & ?mining? - no equivalent recipie as copper dust for ALC
Silver Dust -> Yellow Glass Lens

Mining high grade => Gold Ore
Mining high grade => Gold Sand
Gold Ore -> Electrum Nuggets (with silver)
Gold Sand -> Electrum Nuggets (with silver)
Gold Nuggets only available through HQ

Gold Dust => ? Unknown - no equivalent recipie as copper dust for ALC. Rumoured to drop from mobs (snurble, gobbue, bomb/pudding/ogre)
Gold Dust -> Red Glass Lens

----

There is no pattern to the recipies for dust as silver can't be ground down and neither can gold. It is either an item that
(a) the recipie has not been added for,
(b) is in the database but not released or
(c) is dropped form a monster that most people haven't encountered yet, and possibly a rare drop, hence it unknowness (is 'unknowness' a word?)
