Hey guys, I just bought the game yesterday and have started leveling a Gladiator on Gysahl server. I have played countless MMO's (DAoC, WoW, EQ2, Aion, Warhammer, CoH, AoC, FFXI), and I honestly love this game so far, it is so different from all the cookie cutter MMO's. DAoC was my favorite MMO and FFXIV brings me back to that feeling of being totally immersed in a fantasy world, having to explore and experiment to figure out the game instead of it being shoved down your throat like so many MMOs today. That being said, it could use some polishing in areas, but I'm optimistic the kinks will be worked out in time.

Anyway, here are the questions I have so far:

1. Quests: Been doing leves and the starter quest...I know there aren't many quests, but I would imagine there are some like in FFXI for getting airship and unlocking things. Is this the case? I am Rank 14 now, are there any quests to be done or do they come later?
(I started in Limsa Lominsa if that matters at all)

2. Gear: I'm still pretty much entirely in the starter gear still at Rank 14. Is that acceptable or am I suffering from my lack of appropriate gear? Don't see any merchants for gear, been checking the market wards and found a weapon and shield that I spent ALL my gil on. Is there much in the way of gear drops in this game or is it almost entirely player crafted?

3. Guilds: Was looking at some forum posts and saw some stuff about collecting Guild Marks to purchase abilities or something? Can someone point to some info explaining this system, or just tell me the basics of it? (ie: which to join, what rank to start, how to get Marks)

4. Players: So far I've only met two other people who speak English lol. Is that normal or is Gysahl mostly Japanese? Is the best way to find other English-speaking players the server forums here on Zam?

I guess those are my main concerns as of now, I'm sure I'll run into more soon though, haha.

Thank you so much for any assistance you can send my way, it is much appreciated!

Oh ya, just remembered:

5. Loot: Should I just sell all the loot I get off mobs to NPC's (pelts, feathers, yarn, etc.), or save them to be used to craft later (I kinda want to pursue either armor or weapon craft), or should I sell them in the market ward or something? Looking for maximum efficiency in gil accumulation!

There is a very useful table near the bottom of this link (Lodestone) that shows when new quests become available. Should give you a little more insight.

From time to time leve's will offer equipment some of the higher level leve's beginning at 30 will offer good equip rewards but they will need to be upgraded by a crafter a majority of the time.

For battle jobs DoW/DoM you can get Guild Marks by completing Leve's.When you pick a Leve up it will clearly state how many Marks you will receive for said Leve and to gain 100% of marks from that leve, you must complete entire leve as job stated. For Crafting leve's they do not show how many Marks you will receive but for every Leve level 15 & above you will have a chance when you turn in a completed leve to get marks.Once you build up enough marks of any discipline go to that guild and you may turn in for abilities you have unlocked.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys...very helpful. So for the guild marks, I should head to Ul'dah at some point and get Leve's at the Gladiator Guild to get the right Guild Marks?

You get Leve's at the Adventurer Guild at any of the Main 3 cities. The Leve's you pick up there will offer you Gladiator Marks randomly. You will need to go to the Gladiator Guild eventually though to do Gladiator quest and to turn in said marks.

Nope, just keep on grabbing Leves from the Leve NPC; some will give the right marks, if you actually want marks.

Other than that, just grind. Grind leaves, grind crafts, grind gathering; get those numbers up in preparation for content! There's nothing else to the game yet, but most are hopeful that SE will add something else in the coming months.

Still curious about this...If I'm gonna grind crafts like you say Kitty, should I be holding on to some/all of the random loot from mobs? (are they to be used in recipes?)

If you are planning on doing arm or blacksmith you should save all your ore. Most people like to grind off coblyn's they are quick easy kills. They also have the added benefit of dropping ore.Get your two retainers you are allotted per character at Adventurer Guild and save all materials for those two crafts. The Link Boshed provided you earlier to Lodestone will give you a lot of Crafting Recipe's just go to Synthesis Tab choose craft of your choice to view recipe's.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.
