Sorry. Go play Rift so you can be displeased with the pvp balancing and everyone being forced to play the same three characters and hitting top level in four days.

Huh-hu. Looks like a knee-jerk reflex.
Nobody said that RIFT will prove to be the better game in the end.
But there's *quite* a bunch of things they have done *quite* right.

Their skill tree root/branch system is basically a much-improved
successor to the armoury system, and their jobs mechanics (many more
than in FFXIV, btw) all look pretty "unique" to me. Just take a look
at the Riftstalker class. A FFXI thief on interdimensional drugs.

I don't care whether that game has worse animations or bad PvP mechanics.
I'm just pointing out the things they have done much, much better than
anything the FF team has come up with up to now. Don't defend the obviously
bad parts of FFXIV. Wearing blinders usually results in a stupid horse.

Arguably. It does some things better, some things worse. In the end it is more polished though, but that's a given- nothing in XIV, good nor bad features, are really polished for the reason we all know.

...and that's where I say: Look around, open your eyes, learn.
Don't copy 100%, but take the best of what you see and improve
upon that. Be unique because you are better, not just different.

TL;DR Version:

At this time, there's no incentive to play beyond personal enjoyment. Gamers currently want more than personal enjoyment. They want constant carrots, levers, and pellets. You could make the best game ever in terms of design, balance, and lore, but if there's no carrots, levers, and pellets, it won't retain its players.

I just wanted to repost this to try to break up the Rift derailment. MMORPGs really have lost the "RPG". Not that carrots, levers, and pellets are bad, but they shouldn't comprise the entirety of your MMO experience. If you can't come up with at least a few of your own goals, FFXIV may never be the game for you.

This game is a perfect example of how MMORGPS have lost the "RGP".

sorry, can we just take a second here? (and kudos to the above poster for pointing this out before me) Someone's done their job very well, because this thread appears to be populated by several people who want a Skinner box type of game experience. It's completely baffling to me.

have you guys gotten so used to pulling levers for pellets?

don't you just want a game that is fun to play? something that you play just for the sake of enjoying the mechanics, visuals, story, whatever. I'm kind of disgusted by people so desperate for content that they're actually begging to be put in a Skinner box.

as far as rift being a "wow clone", good job mindlessly repeating what you heard from the mob. its a WoW clone the same way WoW is an everquest clone. ie, its not. its called evolution of a genre you short sighted parroters. evoluton happens in small steps.

kind of like xiv is evolving now. hope they give us plenty of levers, pellets and electric shocks.

well said. though riftstalker reminds me more of a ninja without shadows, or a monk with swords. and as much as i love all the evasion tanking ablities, my favorite part of this class and maybe the entire game is planar shifting. Once you have like 3 or 4 planar shift abilities, the game gets way more fun for stalkers.

sorry for the deriftrail. but its valuable to talk about rift in relation to xiv, since clearly the SE dev teams have a lot to learn about certain aspects of game design.

people expect rift to be revolutionary for some reason. Maybe people expect that of every new MMO. Probably because, back in the day, when a new MMO came out, it WAS revolutionary. Almost every time. Because the genre had yet to be fully realized. Guess what? its 2011 and the MMORPG genre is firmly established. Certain proven conventions are going to be in every game now. Like the UI.(OMG theyre using WoWs UI! CLONNNNNE! No. They're using the standard MMO UI. WoW did not invent it.)

When Black Ops came out, did you call it a Halo clone?

Rift = MMO goodness

Rift = MMO clone im sorry to say

and i hate to say it, but this is where alot of MMOs are ending up now, and can you really blame them, if they know itl make them money easier, why try to do anything original

Because FFXIV is not a clone ? Nah! Pure originality huh ?

wasnt saying anything bout 14 actualy, just stating a fact that the more clonelike a game is, the better it seems to do
and the more original features, or things that stray for cloneliness....the more bashed the game gets

pure fact

and i came across this nonsense. i like the graphs and charts you had to back up your- oh wait never mind.

i also like how you invented the word "cloneliness". but it doesn't save you from being guilty of tremendous oversimplification. pure fact. original features are embraced if they are fun, and derided if they are bad (hi, fatigue system, you are so original i love you). pure fact.

a good new MMO today takes some of the conventional stuff, and throws in some new ideas or new ways of looking at old conventions.
