GTX580 100% load 86'C for FFXIV Follow

CPU: 980X (3.8GHz)
Asus Rampage III
6G RAM 1600
OS: Win7 (64bit)

FFXIV is run at 1080p
8xQ MSAA, 10(highest) for General Drawing Quality
others at standard
Ambient Occlusion is OFF

However, in-game, my GPU (i have tried two GTX580 and getting the same results) will be 100% loaded and temperature will rise to 86'C

Same result when i tested with Ungine Heaven
API: Directx 11
Shaders: high
Tessellation: normal
Anisotropy: 16
Anti-aliasing: 8x
1920x1080

Is my configuration and results common for a GTX 580 card?

Do you have proper ventilation?

I know the GTX 460's have a max temp of 105C, and it seems the 580 has one of 97-99C. That's just the card itself though, it can handle it, but the heat it's producing needs to go somewhere to not overheat the motherboard and cpu, etc. Just make sure you at least have at minimum an exhaust fan and an intake at the front (provided that's the set up you need with your CPU cooler). If you have a full size tower, you can always add side and top fans. If all you have though is a mid-size case with only maybe one case fan then yes, that temperature is what's expected. I would just download coretemp (or any software of your choice), and see how hot your cpu is getting too. If it gets too hot in there, don't worry about it, the whole PC will freeze up and stop. Obviously it's not the best thing for the PC, but it's letting you know, it needs to be cooled off some more.

I do have proper ventilation with full size tower.
After facing the "blue screen" problems, side cases are take off (ambient temperature is around 15-18'c)
CPU is working at around 55-65'c with only 15% loaded whereas my GPU... 100% & 86'c (tried two GTX580 with the same results, tried all PCI-E slots)

86C is very acceptable for GPU's. You should slap both GPU's back on and run SLI to fuel your 980X.

temp sounds fine to me... fyi running with side panels off actually can cause more problems unless you have a house fan or something blowing directly in the case.

Not to mention the accumulation of dust that a closed case and proper ventilation will help to prevent.

Temp is normal, GPU load is not. Can you export/post your Nvidia profile for XIV?

Those temps are pretty normal for the 580s being cooled with air, my pair are currently higher than that concerning XIV (Corsair 800d case is so not made for air cooling, but my WC budget went to **** when my house gave me the finger). Only difference between you and myself is the cpu and resolution (I play at 6052x1080 over three monitors). The question I have is do you set the fan speed at Auto or do you use a program like MSI afterburner to ramp em up. If I remember correctly, the 580s are locked at 80-85% max speed stock but can have their bios flashed to allow them to ramp up to a full 100% but be warned they get quite a bit louder at that speed. Considering what you paid for the cards I would say it would be a necessary sacrifice to insure your cards don't overheat.

Ya, if everything else inside the case is getting well ventilated, then I wouldn't worry about those temperatures. As for 100% load from the GPU, why wouldn't it maxed out from a game like FFXIV? I don't think he's actually SLI'd the cards, he's simply tried two different cards to see if there were any heat variations.

with my 480 i can just use Nvidia Control panel to set up fan speed/temparature correlation profiles. Can you not do that with the 580?

My first 480 blew up using a standard fan profile lol :(

maybe turn down MSAA from 8x

Precisely, the load isnt normal:
running at 1080p with the configuration in my early post:

Before running XIV:

When running at 1080p with the configuration in my early post:

Fan speed is at 60%

turn down MSAA from 8x will be sad for a 580 card
FYI, with the same CPU and motherboard, my friend's 480 card is running at full configuration, 70-90% loaded, 70-75'c

I'd second the advice about not taking off the side of the case. In a lot of cases this will actually reduce airflow and increase temperatures.
