Just wondering what everyone thinks about the amount of weapons available per melee class. Maybe I haven't looked far enough into it but it seems like there are only a few per class. I have been leveling pugilist and came on here to see when I could upgrade to new weapons as I just hit level 14. To my surprise there were only a handful of weapons to choose from from 1-50. What are your thoughts on the amount of weapons per job.

Keep it simple. That's my thought.

I'd like to see scythes, two handed swords, katanas, pistols/rifles...

I'd be surprised if these weren't added in some future patch or expansion.

I agree with you, for pugilist and lancer the weapon selection is pretty poor, the weapons do blunt damage or a mixture of blunt/piercing/water but that's about it. There are enough to get you from 1-50 but nothing spectacular, I think things will get better but I just don't think it's a priority for the developers right now. It will get better.

IF they can balance it out.

FFXI had many items and while some where more useful than others in general situations, sometimes the odd pieces of gear was usable in certain situations.

The variety of weapons in FFXIV are there to help you overcome your weapon's natural tendencies (what kind of damage it does). However I do hope weapons in the future can be designed with some of people's builds in mind such as an emitity + blade for tanking or something. Or weapons that are specifically built for certain weapon skills. all in all, i hope individual player styles will shine.

No.

But these are things I want AFTER content...

IMO, they need many more with varying stats, effects, and many more level options. Especially at higher levels, you'll be stuck with the same boring weapons for way too long.

It's a pretty boring and limited selection in my opinion.. And the fact that you can only use one type of weapon on each class only makes it worse.

True, ffxi did have more variety, but really did any one ever use anything different at each level? No they used the best available. Unless SE implements some random mod items, you could have 20 different weapons per level, but the only ones people are going to make/use are going to be the best ones. Keep it simple FTW.

I'm 99% positive there will be more weapons of each type and more types of weapons in the future. Right now the progression of weapons is pretty straight forward. There is very little debate what weapon you should be using at certain levels.

I'd like to actually have realistic options for my weapon selections, but that's not a priority for the game right now. It -will- happen sooner or later though. :)

You don't want everything to be terribly clear-cut at every level, and to have situational things be pretty much nonexistent. I don't see any reason to think much of our weapon selection/usage at this point.

Like so much else, they seem to have rushed it and failed to give it the effort it deserved. So, what we have is an uninteresting progression. At least to me. Let's hope things improve as the ranks go up and time goes on..

Edit - Let me even give you an example of where something seemingly useless can still have value. When my friend was helping me when I was new to FFXI, we killed an NM Yagudo in Giddeus that dropped an Aspir Knife. Is this a good dagger? Is the MP Drain even really useful? No, and no. But it was memorable and fun to play around with.

I want interesting weapons too. Soboro-Sukihiro (SP) was one of my favorite weapons in FFXI.

Yeah, at 75+ it's uses were limited but Sam/Dancing with soboro was just too much fun.

Examples of weapon choice and diversity in ffxi:

For Sams:

Hagun VS Onimaru VS Shinsoku

Clearly, Hagun won in many situations, but if you planned on using 300% tp, Haguns base dmg did not beat onimarus. Plus you would have sams who couldn't afford Hagun, so the choice was down to Shinsoku or Onimaru. The uneducated sam would rock Shinsoku for the TP drain.

Beast Slayer / Demon Slayer / Dragon Slayer / Etc
Very expensive swords but you could change them out to intimidate different enemies.

Corsair's Gun / Martial Gun / Peacemaker
On corsair, Martial gun made up for accuracy on ws, Peacemaker for pulling and Corsairs for pure damage.

Eurytos Bow VS Othinus Bow

If Acid bolts procced, Obow, else, Ebow.

I can go on and on. I just wish there was more choice. These chocies did exist at lower levels but just not as clear cut since they would be a few stat changes delay and base dmg.

i just hope they think things through with items like that, and DON'T do it the way they did like in FFXI. there were so many items that would have been usefull, but the requirements were way to strict and obscure.

I enjoy the liberty of classes such as Gladiator who can pick between your classic longsword for slashing and hacking, or a more stylish dagger for precision based stabs. It allows me extra tactical decision by being able to pick what flavor of weapon within my scope of martial expertise I decide to use for the task at hand. Obviously more of this for a broader selection of classes can't be a bad thing under the assumption that there isn't "one" weapon which excels at everything (I'm looking at you Ridill.)

Something I would like to see is different base stamina cost for basic attacks (the ones that cost 0 points to equip) for different weapons of a same class.

As some others pointed out, making more weapons just for the **** of it may not be spectacular, but increasing individual play customization would be fun.

Among other things, different weapons with the same DPS could have different attributes bonuses depending on your style of play, or in this example, higher base damage when stamina cost is higher, so the cost of missing your hit is higher but your TP moves hit harder. TP gain could also depend on stamina cost.
