I've been reading threads about how people love the new job/class system, people hate the new job/class system, people want it more like FF11, people like it flexible, people like it more specialized, people want old classes, ect....

lots of opinions and lots of great points to support them.

So I got to thinking... for the party dynamic of it... what if they implemented special sets of abilities that were sort of... multiplayer in a way? For instance, if you had a gladiator and a conjurer working together, it would unlock a more potent paladinesque ability that would only be available for the duration the two of them are together. But it could work like a spell. Both would have to activate it and it would be on timers just like everything else. I feel like they could really play around with this and experiment with lots of different job combinations.

For those of you who have played these games its sort of a combination of crystal chronicles's spell stacking and disgaea's magi-change stuff.

Could be fun, right?

I remember Crono Trigger when you could do basic duos such as "fire-sword" and quite complex trios you had to unlock that could use the strongest elemental spells to create a "OmegaFlare" type of spell.

Weapon skills were combined too, not only magics.

If you're talking about the same character having both classes to gain those special abilities this idea has beeen put foward on the forum.

If indded you're talking about multiple characters, each using their abilities to get a bonus result then the game already has it, they're called Batttle Regimen.

Yes. Just that Battle Regimens are no way as cool as what the trailer suggests.
(Btw: GW2 does right that: mage casting fire wall, archer shooting arrow through
it -> flaming arrow; so don't tell me it's impossible)

If you're looking for good looking stuff I'm sure there is a manga out there somewhere you can watch.
This kind of implementation is mostly to help defeat the mobs. Personally I prefer the mob loosing defense than nice graphics showing up

Why does there need to be a choice there? Can't it look good and provide useful bonuses? I'd like to see some combinations like you suggested in the future, although the more FF-esque style of enchanting someone's weapon or something rather than making a ring of fire and shooting through it etc.

It is possible in a game that is going to be heavily instanced.

The things that they're doing in GW2 comes as a result from its structure. For FFXIV to do all the trap laying and environmental stuff that GW2 does, they have to throw you into an instance every time you enter battle.

Back on Topic. The ideas of certain abilities being unlocked or usable with a certain combinations of classes is a fantastic idea. Personally I think that they should implement this via battle regimen or skill chains which they should look to revise and explain better for the most of us.

Another Idea is to provide certain party combinations with trait bonuses such as improved defense or attack. Along with that I kind of wish there were formation bonuses that give you bonus stats or attacks for standing in a certain formations.

Battle Regimens should definitely have visual appeal. They are so aesthetically whack right now it is mildly upsetting. Mildly. Visual effects are a big part of a game like this and to deny their importance is silly.

An abilities effects should convey the power of the ability. I mean, a BR can debuff a mob's Def/M.Def/TP all at the same time - yet it looks like we're just hitting our 1 button again.

Enhanced attacks should look enhanced...

I want a visual effect that atleast shows the regimen worked. Too often its hard to tell if it actually worked (yes, I know you can see if the mob has the debuff).

I have no problem admiting that visuals have a big inpact on a computer game such as FFXIV.

My point was made to answer Rinsui's has his only concern appeared to be the look of things. My point was that if I had to chose between the two I would prefer the inpact caused on the mob as oposed to looking good but making no difference.

correct me if im wrong but battle regimens are activated depending on what skills are used, right?
What I was suggesting would be similar I suppose, but the there would be special skills that would only be available to you depending on what classes you were partied up with.
