New to FFXIV or sort ofFollow

I was one of those players totally stoked to be in the FFXIV beta test and then get hammered with extremely poor FPS. I finally broke down and bought a copy (considering my computer scored a 2900 in the bench) and so far I am impressed. I have a couple of hiccups on default settings, but for the most part it has run smoothly. So inc with newbie questions, how can I travel between the starting cities (aside from a sunday stroll through the wilderness), is there any ships that can carry me to the other cities?

Unfortunately aside from running, the only option for traveling between the cities is to 'teleport' (but you'll have to actually hit the Aetheryte crystals before you can teleport there). Try seeing if someone nice and generous won't port you to the other starting cities. Travel options are pretty limited at the moment.

Because of a VERY bad choice by the dev team, you may freely be teleported to all cities and aetherytes without ever having walked there on your own the first time. What city did you start in? There is a ship that docks in Limsa, and takes you to the west coast of Thanalan, which is just a short walk to the city of Ul'dah.

(I say "bad choice" because where is everyone's sense of adventure? We should have to walk to new locations at least once.)

Hah! I agree. I actually enjoyed the walk from Gridania to Limsa Lominsa. Although my first time I forgot to click the crystal in LL and couldn't port back :\

I started in Limsa and thank you for the quick replies. I will look for the ship and head to Ul'dah. That is actually where I am trying to get to for the miners guild. Now if I could figure out how to mine the right stuff out lol.

So no chocobo rides at all?

Not at the moment no. As for mining, there is probably a loot list with the 'sweet spot' (a spot on the depth bar that'll give you the highest percent chance of obtaining a certain drop) online which should help your mining endeavours.

No chocobos yet, and you should be able to walk from the ship to Ul'dah in a little more than 10 mins

And just to reiterate, remember to touch to crystal when you get there.
