2011-02-16 02:30 From : FINAL FANTASY XIVEnhanced Login Security for FINAL FANTASY XIV
As a measure to help prevent unauthorized access to FINAL FANTASY XIV accounts, we will be introducing a system to restrict logins when suspicious account access is detected. The system will be implemented for FINAL FANTASY XIV after the Square Enix Account Management System maintenance on February 21st, 2011. Details on the maintenance will be announced at a later time.

Under this new system, once login has been restricted, an email notification will be sent to the primary email address (E-mail address 1) registered to the Square Enix account. This email will contain instructions on how to remove the login restriction. Players will be asked to reset their passwords and log in again.

If you are unable to receive the email instructions for removing the login restriction, you will be unable to log in to your account, so please make sure that you have registered a valid email address by February 21st, 2011.

SQUARE ENIX Account Management System
https://secure.square-enix.com/

If you have any questions about how to remove login restrictions, or have accidentally deleted the email instructions, and are unable to resolve the situation on your own, please refer to the link below.

About Login Restriction
http://support.na.square-enix.com/j/lbna

We cannot guarantee that these security measures will be enough to completely eliminate unauthorized access to accounts, and we ask for your cooperation in protecting your personal information, and in taking appropriate security precautions when using your account.

So it looks like we might be getting the update on the 21st as well?
WOuld be nice

I wouldn't get your hopes up.
It looks like they're flagging suspicious logins, probably via geolocation, kind of like facebook. If you live in England and it sees you logging in at Poland it will temporarly block your account

I think if anything this might cause problems to people which log in from different computers or locations.

This can be seen as possible unauthorised access. also will prevent account sharing ^^

It's just an email authenticator. WoW has had it for a while. I'm not sure how effective it is, but so long as your email address is safe, you should be fine for the most part.

Did you miss the part where it says it will be implemented sometime after the maintenance that's on the 21st. If the patch isn't going to be on the 21 even though i would like it to be then i believe that this will be in with the second patch for this month or the first one in the March patches. I also believe that we'll see the second patch in the last week of February. I'm so curious if content will be involved in this one. If their is then maybe people will be able to get into a Behest at Broken Water...lol

On a side note. For anyone who is playing DC universe mmo its weird that they do a daily maintenance for the game. It seems that SE only does it if something is really broken.

Do you think of this as a good thing? I'd rather not have the game be down every day if there is nothing that requires it.

Some games that aren't running super well need very regular maint. Think of it like having to reboot a crappy computer every night because it starts running slow.

As for our 21 maint. I got the same impression. I think well get patch notes by Friday and the patch on Monday.

No. I presumed that the maintenance on the 21st was to actually set up the system, and that it would be active following said maintenance. I would think--or hope, rather--that we'd have gotten details on the next patch by now if they were releasing it that day. Perhaps we'll get those details later today or tomorrow though.

All of this isn't necessary. That is what the one time password is meant for. Next thing you know SE will require full body scans! XD

You notice it says it will be implemented after the Square Enix Account Management System maintenance. This does not in anyway refer to maintenance on FFXIV. This will most likely not even effect our ability to log into FFXIV.

This seems like a good thread to ask this question. When i was playing WOW " yes plz laugh at me" my account got hacked twice. I run Microsoft security essentials and malwarbytes. Both time si was hacked I do not think that go tinto my PC since nothing else was stolen or messed with and neither anit-virus found anything. But on my gmail accounts, i changed the emial but both were gmail both times they had hacked into that as i could check the details page and see people from china, england and france had logged into my email. so my question is what email can I use that they cannot get into and is free like gmail? i do online college and some banking on this PC so i dont like the idea that hackers are getting into my system or at least my email, not sure if once in the email they can get into other files on my PC. any suggestions to keep things safe?

sorry for long post also.

Google is going to be implementing a two-step verification system in the very near future - some accounts already have access to it. With two-step verification turned on, someone can't log in to your account with just a stolen password, they also have to have a code that would be sent to your phone. Here's more information about it: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=1056283&topic=1056284.

If someone hacked your gmail account, they can't necessarily get access to files stored on your computer, but do have access to anything you may have stored in your Google account. They'd have access to any passwords to any account you've registered for using that gmail address, and if they reset your password in a game, they'd have access to the email that's usually sent when that happens. It might be a good idea for now to register a new account somewhere else for the time being to protect yourself, but I can't honestly recommend any other product, as I'm a fan of gmail over everything else out there. Maybe others might have better suggestions.

Obviously we won't know til it happens or we have more info. But as far as getting advanced notice on an update... either A) they're not going to hold to their 2 updates a month, or B) you're not going to be getting much notice. After the 21st, there's only 1 week left in the month.

What does this do, bind the game to your authorized PC? It'd be nice if you could enable multiple authorized IPs, although I doubt it.

In any case, what is this, an update for people who don't have a security token?

I'm a bit concerned this could make being in the Military and aming even more difficult than it already is.

IE I'm currently stationed in the UK, my SE account is registered to a legal US address as is my payment method. Everytime I log in from a UK IP am I going to be faced with this? What about if I deploy and actually luck out enough to end up somewhere with better than dial-up personal internet (a rareity, and even then usually costing around 60-100 USD per month and usually with a stringint data cap).

I've had to pass over quite a few games over the years as Internet required DRM becomes more prevalent. I mean I'll have my emulators and such so I won't be gameless, but being able to log into an MMO while deployed is a nice bit of normality.

As long as they have a secure and streamlined way of verifying that you are the account holder then it shouldn't be too bad. It would definately be bad if they forced users to call their support line each time the account was locked like that.

That, or maybe an option to opt out of the system at the user's risk?

SE has shown via past practice their tendency to take everything down for maintenance at once. For example, the Lodestone always undergoes maintenance concurrent to the game itself being updated. This is what is prompting the thought process that flavvor has expressed, and it's not too terribly misguided. Sure, we're reading between the lines, but it's not too far a leap to suppose the game may be updated on the 21st as well.

I believe Blizzard will let you turn it off if you phone their support line and ask them to do it. You can't do it from the web though. I'm guessing that SE's version would probably work similarly.

though I didn't notice anything from the FFXIV side of the house the post in the Infor section for FFXI stated that anyone using a Security Token would not have to worry about login problems. So, if you travel alot might want to start using it.

Guys there are two maintenance's going on simultaneously on Monday, its BOTH FFXIV maintenance and Square-Enix Account Maintenance. The account maintenance starts at 2 PM PST on Monday and goes till 3:00 AM the next day, but the FFXIV one starts at 5:00 PM PST and ends at the same time. They just haven't posted the FFXIV one, its actually only able to be seen if you login right now, its the start up message upon logging in to your character. It clearly says "FFXIV Server Maintenance" and has a completely different start time, it showed up after the patch today. So unless they got their times mixed up we should be getting both... and to tell you the truth it makes sense to do it on Monday along with the Square-Enix Account maintenance. Get two very long maintenance stints out of the way in one go, and have it all happen at the start of the week in case any issues come up during the server resets.

The FFXI information section states that the hours for their maintenance are 1700-0300 PST, the exact same times listed in the message you see after logging in to FFXIV. Appears to be a full system wide adjustment to the Account Management System. Wether content is also included remains to be seen.

Like I said its possible they got the info wrong on one of their bulletins, because this:

Quote:
At the following time period, we will be performing maintenance on the Square Enix Account Management System. During this period, FINAL FANTASY XIV will be unavailable.

In addition, you will be unable to log into the FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

[Date & Time]
From Feb. 21, 2011 2:00 p.m. to Feb. 22, 2011 3:00 a.m. (PST)

[Affected Services]
- FINAL FANTASY XIV
- The FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone

[Details]
System maintenance

Is what it says on the Lodestone website for FFXIV and the accounts maintenance. So either we are getting two different maintenances or someone screwed up on the times listed between the lodestone and the message within the game.

Thank you for brining this to my attention. I had not seen it til now. I was going by the message seen upon logging in after the maintenance today. The post you cited was not up at that time. Guess we wait for clarification from SE.

If you really want to be confused open up the message in the Support Desk section of the main menu in game and check out the GMT times listed. almost like 3 different people who are not speaking to each other were involved in the dissemination of the times. lol.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the upcoming official forums. They said they would start testing in March, with the official launch in April.

Thats a good point. With the hours and hours of servers offline i do wonder what else they have to add. Going back on y other post i doubt it will be anything to gameplay. It does seem odd that they need 10+ hrs to implament the security, but aftert they do i'm sure they will be testing each server so it works properly.
