Direct X crash Follow

Hello, i understand that their are already several forums on Zam regarding this issue, but many of those have not seen activity sense September or October of last year.

The reason i am bringing this up is this error occurs for me at random. I am running the most recent version of my graphics drivers Nvidia 360M GS and have the most recent version of Direct X. What will happen, at random the game will crash (it happens in any area of the black shroud, particularly grandia, i cannot get more than 5 min of playable time in this area.)

I have tested this in both full screen and windowed mode and I am not alt tabbing or hitting the window key. Also, i have tested other areas in the game, all other areas appear to be stable for play ( I logged 4 hours of straight botanist today around uldah)

No amount of changing graphics, disabling things in msconfig or turning my AV to gamer mode have resulted in a fix for this error.

If anyone has any ideas or can point me to a forum were a concrete answer has been found i would greatly appreciate it, also don't hate on me for spelling its 5:00am right now :P

You didn't mention trying different versions of your GPU drivers and different versions of Direct X yet. I'd give it a try.

we have the same probleme, some evenings we can play all night and no dc,
then a complet random "unable to find directX failure", this can happen in any area,
I have spent hours playing with graphic setting updating all drivers,
It has got better since the 1.15a patch that compacted the graphics data, but it is still extremly agrivating when it happens.
I was told this could be due to overheating but its so inconcistante it cant be!

Driver version 266.58
DirectX support 10.1 DirectX runtime version 11.0

I do not think that it is over heating, as the game will crash in under 5 min if i load to Grandia (from a cold start) While i can play for hours outside of this area, also i run core temp to monitor this and my heat never rises above 65C which is well within the threshold of my comp.

how do you run the game, windowed or full screen?

If windowed, you should not be having this issue.
If full screened, there is a background program that is causing the issue most likely. SE's intollerance of third party software might be to blame, and sometimes causes the direct x crash.

Otherwise, there is definately a driver conflict somewhere.

This problem happens in full screen and in windowed, im definitely thinking its a driver issue, im thinking about trying to get an older version of directX and seeing if that fixes it.

I was having this issue until recently. Kept getting the error message "FFXIV can not detect direct x device" or something like that, and it would full exit. Happened pretty random, and at inopportune times like during leves...

I found another post somewhere, someone suggested it was because FFXIV still has some seriously unoptimized graphical issues and it can overwhelm the GPU. It is not neccessarily heat, it does not have time to overheat, it just cant process what FFXIV needs at that moment and FFXIV shuts down. If the error I describe above sounds like the one you are seeing, it is not coming from Direct X, the error comes from FFXIV when it does not see your GPU for that second and closes.

The suggestions to fix it where pretty simple really, and I did a few others myself and have not had it since. This is what I did:

1) update GPU drivers (a given)

2) Turn down some of the FFXIV graphics settings, mainly shadow quality, MSAA, texture quality. Start with those. Now, here is the trick. Dont turn it down a lot, just start with a little and try to play to see when the error stops. For example, if Shadow Quality and Texture Quality is set to highest and FFXIV runs mostly fine other than this error, turn them down 1 level each then play for a while, if you know the error happens is certain places more often, go there and test as well. If error does not come back, great!!! if it does, turn down again, or lower MSAA from x4 to x2, etc. Rinse and Repeat until it stops..

3) this is something I did on my own, it may or may not help with this error crash, but it helps with gaming in general. Try out something like Game Booster to optimize your computer settings, processes, and services for gaming when in game. You can do this on your own of course, but Gamebooster is free and you can turn it off and on when you game vs. do other things with your computer.
