Hypothetically speaking, April 1st...Follow

(not an April Fool's Day joke, either!)

Would you, the community of FFXIV, continue to play the game if by April 1st they started monthly subscriptions?

Imagine 2 more updates until April 1st; maybe SOME content, maybe not. Would you pay to keep playing?

Why am I asking this? Not to troll or cause even more bitterness than currently exists. I ask because sooner or later this year, they will start charging. Not too much has changed in terms of content since launch, so I ask where you stand.

As an avid player and lurker of these boards, I'd have to say no. I honestly play now because it's free, but nothing is holding me in that would make me pay monthly :(

It's doubtful SE will start to charge April 1st.

Anyway, IIRC, their payment plan will charge you on the calendar day you signed up, I think? So a lot of us will be charged (when they charge) on the 23rd or the 30th.

But either way, I doubt they'll start to charge in April. Would I pay if they did? Yes.

I wouldn't pay until they get the combat/UI completely tweaked, and all the "major" changes that they are discussing and polling rolled out.

This is kind of that stand I have. I was ginding while doing online classes. If they started charging in this state, I would probably cancel until the first expansion was released (which at this point, I assume will coincide with the PS3 launch).

I can't speak for everyone, but I know a lot of people would quit this game and severely damage the population of servers if it suddenly went P2P.

Without doing any kind of straw poll I'd imagine we'd prob lose 4-5 people in our LS over it.
Not that people are cheap, but a lot of people feel the game just isn't ready and worth $150 a year yet.

I'll pay, because I have fun right now.

However before I feel the game is ready heres what I expect:
Chocobos
Airship
Class balancing
A substantial # of quests (I dunno a couple hundred? EQ2 had 2000 quests at launch ...)
PS3 launch or confirmed release date, perhaps beta
Better party features, search, lfg, etc
Market ward adjustments, etc

Mostly, if they completed Yoshi-Ps to-do list, I'd happily pay. As would others. Adding a few quests isn't going to cut it.

Exacttly, id pay if all of the above were implemented or soon to be.
W/O the above its a grind fest and no-brainer challenge. Why get 5 jobs to 50 and when all the content is soon to be.
Im not playing until there is significant change. I dont want to see everything atm, when there is so much in progress.

I would. But I honestly don't think that they will charge any time soon. They will keep this extended beta until it appears that people will stay, sort of a second release, IMHO.

Will people leave when it goes P2P? Yes...That is just the nature of economics. Those that say they are unemploed and just playing to play is because they cannot afford a subscription at this time. If they were employed and played the game casually, I'd bet that the tune might be changed (Expecting Flames for that comment)

Either way, FFXIV will loose some, but it will gain others. I believe that P2P will coincide with a projected PS3 release. So until I here that, I believe that it is doubtful that they will charge bu April 1.

I bet even if they added several quests, added chocobos, added airships, added jeuno, added new cap to 75, added summoners, added companies, added a perfect combat system, added new zones, added new mobs, added new class and rank specific gear, added autoattack, added skillchains, added pvp, added npcs with huge fcking signs over their heads with arrows pointing to them for quests, added more anima, added reraise, new guild leves, added a viable party seek feature, and added an AH..... at least 30% of people would find something else to ***** about and say "No, I would not pay them a monthly fee"

I wouldn't. The game is missing something. I don't even have an r50 and still have storyline missions to do but I haven't signed in for like 5+ days. I'm not drawn to play right now. Knowing I have to grind 6 ranks on LNC just to be able to access the next string of story missions doesn't excite me. Other than that, there's nothing to do.

I just wish there were real party features and more quests that are meaningful and actually worth the while with rewards.... Also I would love armor that is quested specific for the job you are doing... Like the AF's in FFXI :(
In other words I would really have to think about paying........

I'd probably pay, but I think a lot of people might quit (regardless of P2P) if they don't see content soon. Just in my LS I've noticed a huge impact from 1.15a/b. 1.15a made a lot of people hopeful because it was keeping to the update schedule and even though in itself it wasn't an amazing patch (though it certainly had good things), it opened up the box of hope. Unfortunately 1.15b closed it right back up for a lot of people.

Personally I think the game is going to come into its own. I think it'll change, and it'll make a lot of people unhappy because it doesn't conform to their vision of the game, but the truth of it is that the game we're playing isn't what FFXIV will end up being, so don't get too attached, I'm sure whatever they make it will be good.

I kind of want to stick around and play it through the phases, to kind of watch it grow.

As a side note, if my budget were different, I might change my mind. We all have reality to take care of.

heh, I've been hoping all along, that by ps3 release, they will increase rank to 60, and let us start questing for our AF pieces, each ranked at 52,54,56,58, and 60 just like 11! It's possible ^^

I'd probably take a break of few months to explore the new and unfinished stuff in XI until I'd pay for XIV.

The bill also brings this "I have to play because I pay" felling for me and if XIV feels any more like work then I almost expect to be payed for playing it.

Not too optimistic about the fact that they said that they'll only add a small amount of quests first. It might take a lot of time for them to make them enough.

No. Not as it currently stands, whilst Im happying to be levelling for free there is always the end goal after levelling. Unfortunately thats just plain non existant right now. Side quests / Instances / HNMS all need to be in, in some form before I want to pay, along with a huge number of fixes.

I decided at the beginning of the management regime change that SE has until April to add 'something' to this game or I'm going to [try to] deactivate my Cn'B account and attempt to retrieve my FFXI character.
By 'something' I mean quests primarily, but really anything to make this world seem alive would do it.
I'd even be happy with a better reason to party grind or group together for dungeon raids and the like.

I've been reading through the FFXI history log (http://jpbutton.bluegartr.com/?p=145) and in the first year of being online it makes no mention of new quests being added, leading me to believe that the game launched with a majority of it's content. I joined the XI bandwagon soon after the NA release and I never got bored; there was always something to do including grinding and when you do grind there's a reason to do it! I don't feel there's any goal to push on to the next rank and I usually even forget when my PL increases. This makes Validas a sad panda.

I understand that this game is brand new and I've defended it as such but really... Leves Are Not Quests!
Talking to NPC's in XIV seems to always be a tease as they give you a bunch of lore which you would think is going to end with a "hey go find this guy/go kill this/bring me this", but never does.

All-in-all, SE has a little over a month to give me at the very least a reason to get to that next rank.

I need to see a major content update before I start paying. It doesn't matter so much when that happens, although sooner would be better. If a major content update comes out tomorrow, I'll happily pay March 1st. If they continue to just fix mechanics and bugs until July, I will patiently wait to give them money.

Gonna quote something from Yoshi's latest letter concerning quests:

Quote:
Though we will begin releasing these in the next patch, it will be difficult to release a large number of them at once. It is certainly possible to continue developing quests until we reach a target number, and then release them simultaneously, but this would slow the rate at which this new content would become available. I prefer to release fewer quests regularly as part of the monthly patches instead. This may give the impression of less content per patch, but I'd like to try it this way for a span of about two months or so and see how it goes.

I find it difficult to believe charges will start in April, as this dude is still "testing" to ascertain the response of how people are receiving these "content patches." But if they did, No I would not pay, as I believe this game is still 3-4 content patches away from being actually being fun to play. 1 content patch a month takes us to about May/June, and i believe you can expect the PS3 release some time after that.

And I'm just talking about content. The battle/targeting system, as well as an adequate search feature still need adjustments and implementations before I'm tossing dollars.

From the initial letter of Yoshi P when the previous producer stepped down:

"[Extension of the Free Trial Period]
As stated above, the newly restructured team’s top priority is to bring about improvements to the game’s enjoyability, and therefore we have decided to extend the free trial period until we can provide a plan that outlines a level of enjoyment that will satisfy both us and our customers. When we are confident that we have reached that goal, we will notify our customers immediately. "

I think that when they are done with the latest poll, analyze it and provide an in depth plan, they might start charging.

My feeling tho is that they should wait for the PS3 release, if they are any consequent with:

"The PlayStation 3 release will be delayed until we are confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the FINAL FANTASY name for users on all supported platforms. "

(from the same letter)
