Hi everyone, my name is Dan, I'm 21 years old and I live in the UK.
I have just purchased FFXIV and I am looking for some tips and advice.

When I used to play FFXI, I had a DRK which was level 30ish - I didn't get a very high level :)

I'm looking for a decent server to play on, and possibly a nice Linkshell with some friendly players who are playing the game for fun and adventure, and a break from sh*tty work and the real world :)

I don't know what class to be yet; I like playing a warrior type class, and a high damage dealer... but am tempted to play something magic based this time, maybe... what classes are good at the moment?

If anyone has any suggestions, or anything at all, please reply here.
I look forward to hearing some replys.

Dan

I say go to Besaid. Great server lots of people. I would start out as Discipline of war or magic. You can be any class by equipping that weapon or tool for a crafter. So if you do not like your class you can change it. You get to be all classes on one character.

The Glads are the tanks of the game so far but really any class can be. I have leveled many jobs because you can pick the actions of any job and use them on any job. So you can make any kinda of job you want. Its really fun. Also in each town they sell all the weaponds to all classes in the game. SO its really easy to switch.

Beseid is definately a good server

as for class to play, since you can switch at will and try out different things without making a new character, feel free to start as whatever and test them all out to find what you want to play.

Me and my friend are starting together in a couple of days.
If we are both damage dealing classes, will it be hard to find partys?
He wants to be Maraudor and I'm thinking of maybe being a Thaumaturge.

Are Thaumaturges really good? I think it would be nice to do good damage, and I can heal a litle.

marauders can easily tank and thaumaturges can easily main heal. he's gonna need to get gld to like 5 for provoke and pugilist to whatever for taunt though.

I'd recommend leveling conjurer along with your thau. They complement eachother with their skills. Having cure (con) + sacrifice (thau) = no downtime between heals.

edit:
finding parties is impossible with the current search system. it will come down to your LS and shouting. But duoing is pretty much the best way you have for grinding doblyns once you are in level range.

I want to play a good damage dealing class, not a healer or tank, any suggestions?
Would you possibly welcome us two to your Linkshell when we come ingame in a couple of days?
We will surely have a browse first but hey, you seem like a pretty friendly/helpful person ;)

My best advice is to not think about strictly playing one job, but instead to browse through the abilities of each job, and pick out which abilities you want on your melee character. You're main job will fall into place. Great abilities for any class include Featherfoot and concusive blow (low rank Pug). Most DD should have bloodbath (low rank Mur). There will also be specific ones you want - such as Quickstride. Even R18 Thaurmage gives the Drk Absorbs. To be effective in any class, you will want to balance your adventurer. Instead of trying to get one job to 50, try to get as many jobs 20-30 as possible. The game is really geared more for this right now. Many complaints about fatigue and whatnot are from people trying to play the game against how it was designed.

There's barely a need for parties yet unless you're taking on NMs which is at higher ranks, this might change with some future updates, we'll see, but meanwhile you can duo with your friend and its pretty efficient if you know where to go and what to kill and a lot more fun than solo play.

If you are planning on just Duoing together for fun, one melee and one mage would work just fine. It would probably turn into each of you healing yourselves, Melee DD and Mage Nuke. The melee gets a few nice self cure abilites. The melee may consider lancer as main because of its party HP drain abilty. Coupled with murader's bloodbath and Pug's Second Wind, a melee can be pretty self sufficient as far as HP goes. As his partner mage, you will want to concentrate points into earth and keep stoneskin on him (conjurer I think). If you want to sit behind melee, Tharumage attacks/buffs/heals in a cone outward. If you want to be up in combat as a battlemage (very feasible), a conjurer may be more useful as AOE is radius based.

I'm not an officer, but my LS welcomes any active players. Just check out the link there.
Here's the leader's fantaji (ffxiv twitter) account too :P http://fantaji.com/natsukarekinen?p=4

We are going to level together as a Duo.
We will take it in turns being DOW and DOM classes. (i.e glad/conjurer)

What is a good race for this? Or does it not matter at the moment? I remember Galkas had rubbish MP pools in FFXI...I dont know if it applies in this game.

Thanks

Race is currently, and will likely remain, irrelivant as far as stats are concerned. It is purely for appearance since you have full control over your stat point allocation.

Feeling a little, and I mean a little unsure about the game now. Maybe I have brought it at a stage where it's way too undeveloped...
