I've realized that using a keyboard and mouse is not making it for the game. I bought a Logitech controler (Gamepad) for the game. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get it to work with the game. Is there a Default setting for controlers or do I have to program it myself?

Well I use a Logitech Controller too, to set up your bottons for the game your going to have to go into your game directory and use ffxivconfig.exe. From there click controller and set up your controller as you like.

You need FFXIVconfig.

C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV\ffxivconfig.exe

Pretty easy to setup from there.

Go into the menu when you get in-game and you can turn on the "chat specific keyboard" after your controller is working. That helps.

I think I need a controller set up for Dummies list. I tried config and I get a screen with Language. English of course, General, Gamepad, System information. Clicking gamepad gives me a menu to use but I cant seem to get it to work right

Use your mouse to click on the very first box (top left). Then use the controller to carefully press the button you want for each slection. I suggest you use the d-pad buttons for Menu options. It will automatically advance you to the next option as you press buttons on the controller. If you mess up one, just start over, or use your mouse to select the box where you went wrong.

After all the boxes are filled, just close the window. It will save automatically.

Hope this works for you.

You can always go back and try another setup.
