Alright... I just did some quests. And here is what I got so far:

Disclaimer: like some others on the board, I was pretty much satisfied with FFXI, save for the amount of time it took to do anything... (I'm a moron, I'm looking at you). I've also played WoW, because that's what my friends were into, though I never felt it had the same appeal that FFXI did.

These quests are very disappointing. I have done about five or six of them, and I haven't gotten a single cut-scene, or special piece of gear. There is absolutely no motive to do the quests.

Some might argue that storyline is the point of doing the quest. And that's fine. But the stories I've seen thus far are very shallow, and don't do anything to immerse me at all. They're not even interesting. In fact, they are very blatant about telling the player specifically "Go find X and kill it."

One of the things I loved about FFXI was how much thought and care went into each quest. They had an entire story laid out for the player to uncover. I actually felt like it was worth doing, because I wanted to know what happened next. (Anyone remember the "Save the Clock Tower" quest? I love that one! But this... this isn't near the quality of craftsmanship that I expect from SE. That's what really burns me up. They have a superior product that is ages behind this game in terms of graphics, or anything else that new high-tech gadgetry can make. But they didn't give it the same quality or care that a Final Fantasy title deserves. I think if they stopped trying to be so "innovative" to compete with everyone else, and realized that most of what they already had worked great... then we might not be in this situation.

I completely understand that they can't just wave a magic wand and get everything fixed. But what I'm most discouraged about is the direction that the game is going in. Everything is centered around doing things quickly. When they announced that, (before the game was released), I thought it was a neat idea. I kind of liked the idea of playing Final Fantasy, but without having to wait two hours for a group of six people of the appropriate classes and level ranges to be on. I thought it would be kind of neat if everyone could solo, but still have a defined role in a party. ****, I was excited. But the game has been one let down after another. I know by definition, these quests are considered content. But this is not the quality of content that needs to be in this game. I can't believe that SE thought this would be okay to release.

Fact of the matter is, I could just as easily do the repetitive leves that I've been doing for weeks on end, get the money, and go buy the stupid crap I've gotten from these quests. There aren't any decent rewards, or items that can only specifically be gotten through quests. What happened to rare/ex items? Only my underwear is exclusive?

I'm sorry for the rant. But this is ridiculous. With very weak stories, and rewards that make me feel like I've absolutely wasted my time questing instead of trying to max out of fatigue for the ******** week -( that's another box of mental issues that we don't need to open)- I can't help but feel like this content patch is pitiful at best.

The only real difference between these and leves is that I don't get anything worthwhile out of it. So far, any reward I have gotten, I could have bought or made myself. I've tasted chicken broth that were stronger than these plots. So what's the point?

If anyone finds a quest that is actually worth doing, please let me know. I really want the game to work, but it seems at every turn, the game goes in a direction that I am just not happy with, and real issues are pushed back and ignored.

But its content! We asked for content and we got it. You have no right to complain about it man. If you go to a restaurant and you ask for soup and the waiter brings you a bowl of **** you wouldnt be right to complain either.

HOORAY FOR NO SP REWARDS! =D

On second thought I'm doing this quest where I'm supposed to collect 8 mamrmot pelts. All the marmots I've killed so far yield sp &xp am I doing it wrong? Are there somewhere instanced mobs for this quest that are the specific thistletail marmots I need to kill that don't give SP? I don't care about the sp I just want to complete the quest.

So either this post is all lies or I'm wasting my time killing the wrong mobs.

You need to open Quest Journal, click on Map. The Marmots you need are Bristletaile not normal Thristletail.

Cool, thanks for that. Are these mobs the ones that don't give sp btw?

Any time my adventurer heroically kills an enemy in battle - SP and EXP should be earned, since skill and experience are improved.

Side quests should provide the regular amount of SP for killing the enemies just as if I had killed a wandering marmot.

The lack of SP/EXP earned actually encourages bad gameplay. If you take a lower ranked quest when you have a higher ranked character - the system encourages you to switch to your highest ranked class and one shot everyone in sight - and victory! The quest reward is yours, and it took less than 60 seconds.

If SP/EXP was earned, I would at least switch to a rank appropriate class so that I would earn SP/EXP as I went on the lower ranked quests.

^^ This :P ... Even if you end up taking a higher quest than the class you're working on and need to party to beat it you'd probably just switch to your highest and 1-2 shot everything since you don't get sp anyways. In parties too , everyone gets the drop on the collecting ones so yet again more of a waste of time. At least if it were hard pt oriented quests with mobs that gave sp and such it would give that extra incentive. But as it stands right now its pointless.

I've done 15 quests and not found one useful or unique reward and the only reason I keep doing it is cause I'm a completionist and figuring these might chain into more epic unique quests released later :P out of the 15 quests I did 2 were pointless run arounds and THIRTEEN of them were kill 8 mobs ... >.< Least they have the foundation set so now instead of wasting time coming up with a working system AND writing quests they can spend time on making quality quests which MATTER xD

Quests not giving SP really bugs me, because it actually demotivates me from doing them. What I like about quests in WOW(and a few other MMOs but thats the one people know), was more often than not, they rewarded you going through a guided experience. They encouraged you to vary what you killed, they encouraged you to go to far out of the way places, and just generally rewarded you for doing things a little differently.

Instead of attempting to follow that idea, FFXIV completely just separated progression and questing. Say I see a quest for some mediocre r25 piece of gear (something I wouldn't really go out of my way for), that basically required killing 10 dodos of some kind. If I'm going to get SP from them, I'm more willing to go out and make sure that 10 of the things I kill this afternoon are those dodos. But the way they did it, I'm killing those dodos purely for the quest reward, which from the looks of what we've seen, aren't anything special, so unless I really want that reward, I'm not going to bother.

Exactly. Effort = reward. If effort=/=reward, pass.
