Grats on page claim; I didn't want to get greedy and claim page 200 and the new page.

You should have posted a better pic to celebrate though.

Wasn't angling for a page claim. Was just thinking about sock puppets and lamp shades.

I still don't get it; I never watched lamb chop; my little sister did, but I was too old by the time it was on TV.

After a week or so I finally had to stop in and check out why the obvious troll thread is still active.

Mikhalia! Are you feeding the trolls again?

Just make sure not to let them near water or feed them after midnight.

Yeah, yeah, that's what the signs at the zoo say, too. At least here it doesn't cost me $5 for parking and $15 to get in (not counting food and drinks; yeesh)

This thread has kept me entertained while the servers have been down. Rate up for all the sock comments/pics. Was also wondering why this was still on the first page till I actually took the time to read the whole thread and hope it stays up for at least another 6 and a half hours.

Welcome to the thread. We have cake and pie. Well, actually they're really rotten eggs and some worm-ridden fruit. But according to the OP's definitions of cake and pie, they're cake and pie.

I just wondered if he meant Lamb Chop when he typed lamp shade.
Lamb Chop was a sock puppet (I know you know but just in case) and I guess maybe he was giving an example saying OP was one? Maybe?

So here I am, looking for some info on FFXIV to decide if I want to play and I run into this thread. Talk about 'this conversation is degenerating rapidly.' I actually read through all 5 pages and while I don't normally join a forum just to post on one thread (I ended up finding out that I had an account already so it wasn't too horrible) but I just had to hop in on this one. I have run across many raving lunatics on forums across my many years on the interwebs, but this guy probably takes the cake.

Bush-whateveryournameis, please do me a favor and stay working where you are. I have enough heartburn with the old farts at Unisys that can't follow a PDF on how to upgrade FlareCode on a SAN. I don't need 'retail tech gurus' trying to get into the IT field because they're 'good with computers.'

I won't get into a debate about PS3 Cell Procs versus i7 procs because, to be honest, I am not too current on the home tech specs these days. I am too tied up in the server world where your arguments might hold water when talking about multi-threaded apps running on Unix mainframes with PPC or SPARC processors. I seriously doubt any of that holds true in the home market seeing as how the costs would be about 10:1 to get what we call the 'big iron.' Again, totally different set-ups, totally different workloads and totally different worlds as far as this is concerned.

The above doesn't even take into account the age of the current console generation. I believe that the economic 'recession' forced many of the console vendors to put off next-gen consoles in favor of enhancing the current platform (e.g. Kinect). I definitely saw F500s extend their refresh cycles from 3 years to 5 years as a result of this and I can only imagine the same thing happened to the console vendors. I'm actually looking forward to the next gen consoles because I have all but abandoned PC gaming. I hope that Sony and MS come out with some seriously powerful consoles soon, but that might be unrealistic. I think it may be time for me to return to an MMORPG because of this. Normally, MMORPGs are not too heavy on graphics and processor use, so I might be able to get along fine with a decent laptop.

Since I am not currently playing an MMORPG (which is why I came here to begin with) I am almost an exclusively console gamer (when I have time at least), but I do love PC gaming as well. My main problem is that I travel 40+ weeks a year, and traveling with a PC tower isn't all that appealing. Traveling with a console is still odd, but I do it from time to time when I will be somewhere for more than a week. Laptops generally don't get near the power of desktops, so gaming is a little limited on those. Alas, it is mainly with a laptop that I travel. I guess I just need to figure out if FFXIV is worth playing or whether it is better to go back to FFXI. That will also decide whether I need to get a new crazy laptop or if I can use what I have already.

So I leave you with this...will FFXIV live? Will it be the biggest MMO ever made? An inquiring mind wants to know. lol

I have a 1.8gig dual core laptop with a 512MB video card, and 4 gig ram. I can run FFXIV at minimal settings, and it will run, but it will lag quite a bit. The graphics of XIV are amazing, and playing with minimal settings on a low price laptop will disappoint most people.

However, I think that an MMORPG is best described by the persons that play it. Who you play with are what makes and breaks your enjoyment factor. If you ever happen to make it to the Mysida server in the future I would be more than happy to add you to our party, and I hope that your experience really shows the competence FFXIV.

Now on the Survival of FFXIV, Final Fantasy started out BEING the Final Fantasy. The very first iteration of FF was meant to be the last. When it was made, no one expected it to be as successful as it became, and the fact that it has come to be such a legacy is something anyone above the age of a teenager can sit down long enough to think about and figure out if FFXIV will really bomb out or not.

Seriously kids, if you have nothing better to do than sit on the internet and cry about the failure of you favorite game, or its eventual success, you have a problem. I will provide no solution for the fact that no one cares; and I will continually lurk on this forum for the sheer giggles that your inane posts add. Thank you for being here to make sure that Zam stays as entertaining as I see it to be.

I own it on p.c. and will buy it on playstation 3 also. Ps3 will be able to handle the game very easly if they take there time coding it(or whatever it is they do).Large games like M.A.G. with 256 players at war runs very good on ps3. Considering your gonna have to use a good portion of your hardrive to install it(maybe)and the large space the bluray discs can hold i see no problem with ff14 on the ps3.Only thing is would people buy it with how the game is atm. I love ff14 and only see extra content as a bonus but i do understand the lack of content and little changes that need to be made to make it better. Servers please come back on soon...

That actually helps a lot. The normal (beater) laptop I travel with is a CULV unit that doesn't do much more than simple work tasks. I do, however, have the last gen MacBook Pro with a 2.4 C2D and 8GB RAM. The only thing I am unsure of is the GPU. I know it has a discreet Nvidia card but have no idea how powerful it is. I guess I can run the benchmark on in when I get home. I'll have to bootcamp Win7 but if the game is worth it I dont mind. I played FFXI for many years from NA launch, so if someone can compare the game play to that for me it would help a lot. Can I do a trial period or something? Maybe a buddy pass? I loved FFXI and loathed WoW. I didn't last a week with all those rug rats on there. As you said, the social dynamic is the most important - at least to me. I still talk to several friends that I never met IRL but played with daily on FFXI. I miss that.

I am glad that helps you out a little bit. I think that you should do ok with your newer laptop, as long as it is a discreet card, and not an onboard. I heard some onboard GPU's just aren't able to play up to task. Initially though XIV was meant to run on high end, with a minimum of 1gig video cards, but sometime after November the data processing was lowered, and 512 can be pretty decent I hear. I can't really attest, I haven't seen how far a 512Mb can get, I just use my laptop for days that I like to only craft, and I will switch to my desktop when I finish.
I can't really say about the benchmark, if it will tell you what you need to know or not. But I can say my laptop recieved about 900 points. I think if you get anything better than 1500, you can play around medium resolution.

No, it's called being realistic. Let's pretend I'm a Lions fan (I feel dirty just saying that)

Realistic: The Lions have some good players, but they'll probably still end up 6-10 or so.
Realistically Optimistic: If the Lions draft well, they have a shot at going 8-8.
Very optimistic: The Lions have a good shot at going 10-6 and making the playoffs this year.
The OP: The Lions will go 16-0 in the regular season, win the super bowl, and the NFC's pro bowl team will be all Lions players.

Really, I want FFXIV to be successful. I think it's a reasonable statement to say that everyone on this board does. I'm not saying I hope it fails, I'm not saying I hope it gets shut down forever; I -want- it to be a good game and I -want- it to have a healthy subscriber base.

At launch, I -wanted- it to be immensely popular and become as well known as WoW, Aion, or other popular MMORPGs. However a game's highest intake of subscribers at any one time is launch, and that ship has sailed. PS3 has a chance of bringing roughly 250k-600k players into the game and drastic overhauls could bring back 150k-250k of the players who have quit, as well as possibly 50k-250k players willing to try the game who passed at launch. Even with the most generous of estimates, the chances of passing 1-1.5 million, while theoretically possible, are rather low.

Once you start making the statement that it's going to have over 10 million sales on PS3 alone, you're becoming absurd.

EDIT: I should post in a new post but I don't want to bump. Just throwing out some more statistical data for the OP to ignore.

Starting with the PS2 era of Final Fantasy titles: (All sources Wikipedia, sorry)
FF10 "The game has sold 6.6 million copies as of January 2004."
FF11 Couldn't locate total sales data, but it's pretty well known that the player base never reached 1 million among all platforms.
FF12 "As of March 2007, the game has shipped over 5.2 million copies worldwide"
FF13 "As of May 18, 2010, Final Fantasy XIII had sold 5.5 million copies worldwide"

And as I've pointed out, there are three times the number of PS2s as there are PS3s. When you factor in that FFXI never reached a million active subscribing players across PC, PS2, -and- 360 in comparison to over 5 million sales (remember also that FF13 was on 360 -and- PS3, this isn't a PS3 only sales figure), the chances of 10 million PS3 users buying FF14... not looking so hot.

Edited, Mar 13th 2011 5:33pm by Mikhalia

Mikhalia There was a point when Xi did break 1 mil subs. That was between CoP and ToAU. But the sub base for a long time from the last numbers I saw always hovered between 500-700k playerbase from all zones.

For XIV there is not much time remaining before it to become a niche title with 250-500k subs if and when SE completes its overhauls. I know they've been slow and that's probably from one of two reasons. First reason is they are giving us piece meal updates until they can do one huge patch or a few in quick succession. Or the worst outcome really have nothing coming and within a year servers go down. That's my best guess right now.

So here I got all revved up to try out FFXIV and they shut the servers down. I won't be able to get to my other laptop until Saturday anyway, and as far as I read, the servers won't be up until Friday at earliest. Is that right? I guess it really doesn't matter then unless they are forced to leave the servers offline for a much longer period than initially expected. I feel very sorry for the Japanese people and all that they have to go through, and I am angered almost daily to find out that TEPCO keeps lying about the severity of various situations all within the plant compound. I hope they get everything stabilized and sorted out quickly for the sake of everyone in Japan. What a mess.

Alas, it is mainly with a laptop that I travel. I guess I just need to figure out if FFXIV is worth playing or whether it is better to go back to FFXI. That will also decide whether I need to get a new crazy laptop or if I can use what I have already.

Go back to XI. It has actually improved a ton in the last couple years - even if you start from scratch you can make a lot of progress in a very small time period, and there is lots of content to revisit or explore. (For example SE is going to rework dynamis entirely)- Campaign is also going to be reworked soon.

I never had a character capable of participating in endgame before so it is really exciting for me to play right now. And even if you are burnt out on the older content - Abyssea has a lot to offer.

Added to the fact that the game is just more fun - you can even run it on a netbook (although better to run it on a half-decent laptop) - XIV you will need a higher powered/more expensive laptop to run

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

Why is this troll's thread not locked yet?

If this were titled "FFXIV will Die. Then it will be the biggest Fail MMO Ever Made" it would be locked in 2secs.

Instead it's antagonistic in a delusionally flattering way - so it's ok?

I'm definitely considering it as my MBP can handle XI easily...I would be excited to see XIV run on it well too...

Not to be offensive, but does it really matter why it hasn't been locked? There are other side conversations going on and as long as it doesn't degrade into a name calling obscenity-fest (ahem - again) I see no reason why it should be locked. No one is getting hurt in here. Maybe **** hurt, but that's another story.

I made this point a couple times, actually. Since the original tone of the OP is positive (even despite the fact that's absurdly over-reaching on a level that is beyond delusion), it will probably not get locked unless it goes WAY off topic or turns into name calling.

Which is fine with me; I don't think it's necessary to lock threads left and right if people are still getting use out of them. Just because the OP is a moron doesn't mean the rest of us can't have fun and +1.
