Please add a jumping feature to the gameFollow

I think it's about high time we saw the implementation of one of the most basic features of... well... any video game: the ability to jump. The fact that FFXIV launched without this functionality is frankly an embarressment in this day and age, and serves to highlight the fact that Tanaka and crew did not learn enough from FFXI.

While they labored intensely to ensure that there was a substandard market system in place of a streamlined AH at launch (with no search functions, no way to compare prices, essentially nothing that would provide players with the adequate tools to start an economy), ensured that quests were handily devoid of any actual entertainment--holding your hand through every step and making the flavor text essentially meaningless, stripped the auto-attack feature to ensure that players would have no time to coordinate or socialize while playing, and devised an attribute point allocation system that ran directly counter to the structure of the Armory System...

...they made sure to keep the game jump-free. They wouldn't want us to have the kind of fluid controls players come to expect from their games, would they?

Personally, I would love to see this feature added. For one thing, it's a constant irritation being stuck to the ground. When I accidentally veer up on a damned boulder while auto-running down the road to Laminsa and have to walk my *** back down to the road rather than just jump down... or when a foot high ledge or a gap in the floor becomes an impossible barrier... something just isn't right.

Furthermore, the addition of a jump feature opens a new dimension to the game, with the possible addition of locations requiring us to jump over obstacles or damaging floor tiles, or hop from ledge to ledge. Abilities could be added to affect jumping (Lancer, I'm looking at you), as could special gear (Boots of Bounding, Jackrabbit Pumps, Shoes of Springing, Leaping Gaiters) and there could even be some tactical uses for jumping (such as jumping to avoid a leg-sweeping move done by a certain NM or boss mob).

For those of you worried that you'll have to watch people jumping like kangaroos through Uldah... relax. First off, that'll happen for like a month or so, unil everyone gets bored and irritated by it, with some stragglers continuing to irritate us for a while... but in the end jump-gazms will go the way of Provoke macros that involve "yo mama" jokes... in emote.

Secondly, knowing SE, they'll implemented it as a (!) command in the menu (like logging, sitting or using the Crow's Lift in Laminsa) when you walk up to a ledge that allows you to jump to the other side of a gap or over an obstacle. Your character will stop moving, stand still for a second, slowly walk up to the ledge, then spring over. If we're really lucky, they might not include the zone-transfer black-out screen.

So don't worry. Have faith, they'll **** this up too.

Despite the sarcastic tone of your post, I rated you up.

I, too, am a fan of jump (implemented the "right" way). With the horrible terrain that's in the game right now, a simple jump feature would make it much less frustrating in many areas when traveling. It would also probably be easier to implement than to fix the millions of terrain spots that shouldn't block your character from running up/down/over.

Like I said in the other thread, a jump feature would be good. If done the right way. Not having everyone looking like bunny rabbits :)

They could implement a jump such that there is no jump key, but your character will auto-jump if you try to walk up a small ledge that is low enough to jump onto. That way there is no issue of people jumping constantly for no reason.

Well, aside from just about every Final Fantasy, but it's not like FFXIV is - oh.

Well, and, I guess, aside from hundreds of other video games.

the only way i see a jump feature in this game that wouldnt anoy anyone, would be if it was done automatic. like if you were to walk up to a ledge that SHOULD be climbable, then your character will jump up. but then that still might not solve all the probles that just being able to do it yourself would fix.

also, it would be much longer to code if it was done automatically because they would have to put jump spots all over the place.

in my opionion id rather the shorter option, but only because id rather they work on something more significant.

sorry for double posting right under my last post but i had to comment to this...

there is jumping in final fantasy games, however in all the cases i can think of, it's done automatically. in FF7 theres spots to jump up and down things, in FFxiii it's used alot also.

the jump feature most people would be referring to would be the type where you press a button and you jump.

Only if jumping off cliffs or into the ocean from bridges will instantly kill your character.

There's no swimming in this game, there needs to be none. Jumping is a useless feature, that the game world wasnt designed for. You hit a ledge, you find another path down, you just dont blatantly jump into the chasm and hope you live. We have railings in place at all the important spots, being able to jump over them is not a good thing. Being stopped in mid-air due to an impassable barrier is even less of a good thing, that ruins every point of realism this game still had left in it.

So no, dont do this. Seems stupid.
