Ideas on the Grand Companies of EorzeaFollow

#1 Mar 16 2011 at 11:58 PM Rating: Excellent
I was pondering what they had in mind for these Public Companies and I came up with a few ideas. First off, I'm fairly sure these new companies will fulfill the need for competition between the 3 main cities and perhaps even their surrounding hamlets. Incorporating that previous statement, it could even become possible to claim the hamlets as part of your territory for the company you represent. This would be similar to obtaining outposts in FFXI, once you obtain enough influence in a region you control the Hamlet for that area. They could add the ability to warp to areas under the control of your company as well as the use of the small guild shops within those hamlets.

The public companies are also apparently supposed to be instrumental in dealing with the coming threat to the peace of Eorzea, as such I imagine they will be involved in company specific quests and battles you can undertake and hopefully gain you some manner of currency that you could use to trade in for unique items or services. They could even work in some manner of PVP battles that competing companies could engage in to vie for territory. (Though the only PVP I want to see in the game is Triple TriadSmiley: lol) . Alternatively, in lieu of battling one another, two teams from competing companies could battle the same targets and fight to complete a job before the other team. Such an idea would serve to reward the team with better communication and teamwork assuming it was instanced and both teams started on equal footing.

Crafter and gatherers should be in the loop as well with quests or supply requests to obtain items for the NPC's within the company or outfit them with new gear. Though I'm struggling with coming up with an idea to implement that would differ from being basically a guildleve with more lore/NPC interaction behind it. Though gathering or crafting unique items or working together on larger scale items would be a start. This would still allow non-battle classes to gain rank/points within the company. Then entire system wouldn't largely differ from how Campaign (at least the Ops portion) worked in FFXI.

As for private player run companies, I imagine that is still in the works but I hope it still involves player housing/boats/gardens/etc. Those alone would serve to keep me busy for weeks/months/years on end working to improve my companies resources and facilities.Smiley: grin

I'm interested in your thoughts and what others ideas/concepts you would like to see implemented as well.

I'm sure what you've posted is pretty much what they are going to be. I would like to see them post something about it though... They keep dangling the treat right in front of our faces then pulling it back and saying "nope we'll tell you about it in a month." XD Nevertheless, it's going to be an interesting feature, and hopefully they add it soon so we'll have something to do before the Godsend that is the battle overhaul comes. ^_^

I'll just try to prepare myself for the least amount of change and content regarding this Companies thing. Everything they've hyped up so far has been nothing but series of massive disappointments.

If there's one hope I have it's that maybe the system involves some real quests.

They've been hinting at this for a year now... and yet there's barely any mention of what they're all about. But I do agree with their decision not to release companies without content to go with them. That sort of thing just makes me sad. ._.

There are some very important specifics for implmentation of this that I hope have been considered already.

Company Interface:
how to add/remove members?
distance requirements to add/remove?
members need to be online to modify their status?
member size limit?

How do Companies interact with the existing LS system?
Do you have more than one LS under one company?
Do companies have their own chat channel?
Do companies have their own Icon/Crest?

New Features:
Do companies have a communal storage area?
Can you set different leves of access to this storage?
Will there be an in-game company message similar to /lsmes?

Bascially, I am hoping that Companies have everything that LS are lacking.

It would be nice to see some of the aspects of WoW guilds incorporated into this system. I like the guild bank, and the settings allowing different levels of access. I particularly enjoy the "guild perks" they recently added in WoW. The idea of the guild/LS/company leveling up as an entity is interesting.

Hate to rain on your parade, but apparently Companies will no longer be an extension of Linkshells. IIRC, they said that private, player owned companies were being suspended/cut in order to focus more on content generating Public Companies.

To the OP's idea:
I think it'd be really cool to have competing PvE company goals, the closest thing I could compare it to would be like resource gathering before WoW's expansions. Here's what I think would rock:
Have areas in each non-city zone have company officials that people can report for duty to. Within a given area, make a behest like objective that drops items that must then be transferred to the company pool, where crafters can pick it up, use it, and turn in the results to achieve company points. So a typical Company day might be like this:

Go to Camp in Thanalan as Conjurer, accept quest and obtain several pieces of cotton bolls. Take cotton bolls to company official in town, receive company points (could be used for gear, repairs, etc).
Switch over to Weaver, pick up cotton bolls from a resource manager in company HQ in Ul'dah. Make cotton Cloth and turn in for company points.

Then have a total score for each company; amount of raw materials gathered, kills generated in the field, plus items crafted creates company influence in a region. This could bring down anima costs, offer free warps to Hamlets, or discounts at local guild shops.

I know its a bit complicated and a bit of a pipe dream, but it seemed like a cool idea and would provide people with a ton of new content and objectives while they prepare more endgame stuff.

What do you mean Public? Not player owned?

I'm sure that I do not understand then. Would you mind pointing me to the source for this information?
