New player...what server should I pick when I sign up?Follow

Hey guys, my brother bought me this game for my birthday. I've been reading about it for quite some time on Zam so I am already aware that there are some servers that have problems with nobody being online. Can I please get some feedback as to which server I should sign up for? I don't want to find out I picked the wrong one and have to start over. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Is there a website that will tell me how many players are in a server?

Not sure which server you should choose at this point. What I do know is you should punch your brother in the eye for buying you this game. =P

Besaid server all the way (it is the unofficial roleplaying server). Lots of english-speaking, friendly players. I have also heard some good things about Lindblum and Trabia.

If you ever get on Besaid, hit me up (Eliza Joran). This is not the most newbie-friendly game so I recommend having someone to guide you through the basics.

The ability to check the server size has been removed. Your best bet would be to check out each of the server forums here on Zam. Take a while and browse through some of the Linkshell Advertisements, and see if there is a group that suits your personality.

The type Linkshell that you join will really affect how you perceive FFXIV, while it is still in its "Open Beta" state.

Hope you enjoy!

+1 for checking out the linkshell recruiting threads first. But if you want a low pop server with some really friendly players on it, I'd go with Fabul.

In the end, pick the server you want to be part of. There is no "best" server. There could be a "Most Populated" server, as there is the reverse. If you have any existing friends that play, obviously go to their server, if not, just pick one. You're sure to find people who are cool, and some who aren't no matter where you go.

Well, unless I overlooked it I haven't seen anyone throw up a Figaro yet so....go figaro! There are a few big LS' on the server and most to everyone i've come across has been very cool to deal with. While there is no way to know the population sizes these days, Figaro was one of the higher ones when we could see that information....for what thats worth now.

The only reason I chose Figaro, was because it shared a name of a city in FF6 (my personal fave FF game), so if you're still undecided pick a server based off that :D. Although I still wish the servers were named off bosses, I really miss being on the Kefka server.

Yea sorry if you're really a nice guy Vik, but I've read enough on these forums to know that if I want any friends in game or on this site I had better stay away from you lol.

Thanks for all your responses! I will check out the server forums and see what I can find. I might post a message or two and try to find another new player who may want to start a brand new guild with me. Would be cool to have someone to "grow with" who hasn't already done everything there is to do ^^.

What's the difference between a regular Link Shell and an RP Link Shell? I keep reading that Besaid is the Role Playing server as well? Isn't everyone "role playing" everywhere all the time? Sorry for being a noob but it didn't make much sense to me when I saw it...

Yea, in some ways everyone's doin' a bit of role playing, but "RP" in this sense is people who really get deep into it & stick with it. They stay in character as much as possible with the way they play & chat. You might walk into the adventurer's guild on Besaid & find some people sitting at a table telling tales of their recent adventures in /say and think "WTF are these people goin' on about??" Not everyone likes to see that stuff all the time and it's tempting for some of us(never me of course though = D) to yell at them and ***** with their RPing. So they prefer to gather on one server or form RP-specific linkshells to make it a more hospitable environment for such activities...

$25 vindictiveblade is Vik's new account and in order to distance himself from his old reputation he's interacting with himself.

I was curious like you to see what server to play on as well. I base my decision on market wards and the community of Uldah. So far I've made a character in most server to see which is the most social and based on my experience, Im lovin Wutai, Besaid, Trabia and Gyshal. A lot of nonsense talk in shouts lol.

I think this is a question no one can really answer unless you have actually played on more than one server.

I am on Besaid and have found a lot of European and North American players and there are some nice linkshells that you can join too.
Looking at the posts in ZAM, Besaid also either has the most forum trolls or there indeed are slightly more people since Besaid has the most posts in the server forums.

And to respond to the comment someone said that you need someone to guide you through... BS!
It is so easy to do stuff in this game without someone helping and the Lodestone is full of guides for new players... on the other hand, it is always nice to have friends who will craft you items or help you do leves (which you can solo as well btw).

Have fun in FFXIV no matter which server you end up Smiley: smile

Not to say you are or are not, but keep in mind that the mods here can tell when somebody's using a sock account. They can (and will) crack down on anyone who creates a sock account just to stir up trouble. That aside...

To stay on topic I'd suggest Besaid. Like it was said, that's the "unofficial" RP server for FFXIV with Lindblum (and another I forget the name of.) being a secondary. It's not required you RP and even if you don't there's many people who would be more than willing to help out others. Be polite and courteous and you'll have people to help you in no time. Welcome to Eorzea by the way!

I switched from Selbina to Besaid. I did that because it seemed Selbina was very quiet, not alot of talking or intereaction. Besaid, however, seems to be much different. I logged in the first time and had people just talking in say and there were a few RP'ing in say also. I have never rp'ed myself. But I do like listening to it and think it makes the server feel more friendly and populated.

I switched to Besaid because I checked out the server forums and saw they had the most posts and thought that would be a good place to start.

Really, any server you pick can be good if you can hook up with a fun bunch of people. My LS on Besaid is pretty awesome!

As I mentioned above, I signed up for the Besaid server the other day. I went ahead and created a new linkshell last night called "Mako Knights". If anyone is interested in joining us let me know! I was able to recruit 5 members already so its off to a good start ^^. We're all new players for the most part, I think 2 of us may have played on a different server but everyone is rank 16 or below so its perfect for players just getting started. If anyone happens to see this message and wants to be a part of a new shell that you can grow with and call your own please send me a message! I plan to keep it a friendly, laid back place to call home :) I'll schedule events and will invite everyone to do leves together every reset but you wont be required to do anything to keep your membership. Once we reach 20 members and I'm comfortable with the future of the shell I will create a website for us.
