So, I am currently running FF14 on my Toshiba, which, despite my $550 purchase, is only somewhat capable of running this game (I am playing on basically the lowest settings.) No surprise. It runs off my AMD Athlon II processor ~2.3 ghz and 4GB of RAM. Graphics card is surely some garbage ATI.
I was hoping that an uprade to another Toshiba with higher quality stats would be more capable of running the game. I'm speaking of a Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5159 with...

AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N660(3.0GHz)
and ATI RADEON HD 4250

IF NOT THAT! Then perhaps an Alienware M11X with...

Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz/800mhz FSB 3MB cache)
2 GB RAM DDR3 (Considering bumping up to 4GB if necessary)
and 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335m

They are both currently within my price range ($650 or less.) If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your assistance! (:

I don't think they would make much difference sadly.

And I think you got the CPU wrong for the Alienware? coz it should NOT work with XIV
just IMO, i dont think you should play on laptop...if you have a demand for performance.
since same bucks on a desktop could easily double the performance

unfortunatley its hard for that amount of money to play this game well. if you could i really recomend getting a quad core processor you will get a sifnificant boost. 2 core doesnt seem to cut it very well.

also that graphics card is pretty bad. for a low end card i recomend a hd 5770, it will be able to run the game smoothly on low settings at 1080p.

Yeah I assumed i wouldn't get much out of $650 haha.
Thank you very much though. I suppose I will attempt to search through a thousand or so guides on how to craft my own gaming machine.

I'm playing on an alienware m11x but I still have to use the lowest settings. I think, though, that alienware released a newer version of the m11x with a better processor which would help a lot I think. Two 1.30 GHz (even though you can overclock them to 1.73 very easily) seems to be the biggest limiter for me.

I can also recommend this. I have a HD5770 (VaporX, but I haven't touched its clock) and a Q6600 (L7 batch clocked to 3.6ghz) and 4gb of RAM and I can play it at the low/middle end at 1080p or mid/high if you're willing to drop the resolution a bit, which I did for the draw distance.

I wish I hadn't bought that Q6600 now, **** thing is such a workhorse I can't justify getting a newer one :<

No offence to anyone but seeing people talking about buying Alienware really annoye me - you know you are paying through the nose for a brandname, right?

I built a PC for FFXIV for 1600 €, the equivalent Alienware model was retailing at 3500 € AND IT'S A F**KING DELL.

Haha I'll definitely be looking into that graphics card.
And the only reason I was looking into an Alienware m11x is because they recently dropped the price to $599 for the old models. But I'll be forging my own desktops for now on (:
