I think it's in:

C:\Users\Your_Name_Here\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\user

I'd just back up that whole folder, then copy/move when you're done re-installing. This is just a guess though.

I recently recovered mine from My Documents\My Games\Final Fantasy XIV\User\Somerandomnumber\mcr0

Its was a simple copy paste job of the mcr0 file and my macros were copied across fine, I did see a website state it was mcr1 tho. Back up the whole "User" folder as Osarion said.

hey thats pretty cool.

now if SE would give us a bunch of macro books so i didnt have to try and cram in a bunch of different jobs into 50 ctrl and 50 alt, macros would be awesome.

(in case anyone is wondering, i prefer to have abilities on ctrl and spells/weapon skills on alt. it makes it easier for me. the current system doesnt allow me to do that and i get confused where my things are. especially since i have both thm and con, they take up alot of macros D: )

I recently built a new computer and I had to reinstall FFXIV into a new HDD. I was under the assumption the macros would not be there when I went back into the game, but actually every macro I created was still intact. So, I believe the macros are saved server side. (don't quote me on this, but this is what happened to me and not sure if this is 100%).

The only time that I had to reload, I did a total wipe without any backup use. This wiped out all macros. It is possible that those that have had to do reload had them on a backup file that got reloaded because I do not think that they are staying on the server side.
