Need advice on choosing a serverFollow

Hi everyone,

(and sorry in advance if I bore everyone out of their minds with this question),
I used to play FFXI (on Shiva) back in 2004/05 and was quite in love with the game, but more with the awesome community of players worldwide. It was a pain with me being in central Europe sometimes either playing really early in the day with the Japanese, or really late with the Americans, but awesome nonetheless. I still remember playing every morning with a bunch of Hawaiians in the "Night Shift Squad", the name beig related to the fact that it was late night where they were playing from. Happy times.

I am seriously considering starting FFXIV, now that the game has become really cheap and the patches seem to make it better bit by bit. My big question is: What server do I choose?
I liked the international atmosphere on Shiva and I didn't mind playing late (or early) in the day, but still it would be nice to have some Europeans online at the same time (I'm in the UK now). So, to summarize, I would like an international server that is not populated exclusively by Europeans but has decent number of players from all over, including players from Asia which I have made nice experiences cooperating with :) I also don't mind roleplaying / "in character" playing.

Any recommendations?

Thanks very much in advance, guys :)

I imagine you want one of the higher pop servers. Selbina is one of the higher pop servers I've seen that English-speakers (i.e., people on these forums) seem to use sometimes, which is precisely why I chose it. I also wanted an international server, and felt Selbina was a good bet. As you can see from my ranks I haven't played on it much, but I am surprised by how many people I see playing (during the late evening North American Eastern Time, which is five hours behind you--so roughly 2 AM to 5 AM your time).

I've heard that the Narshe server may be haunted; and that the Fisherman's Horizon server has a number of giant beastmen lurching around in towns killing everybody... so defer to your own judgment but, it I were you, I would stay away from either of those.

Like the previous poster mentioned, Selbina's a good server. In fact, it is most likely the best server because 1) it has a decent population, 2) it's named after my first love, FFXI, and 3) I amble about there. Hit up a guy named Ronin Yabusame if you want to join a Linkshell, he invited my wife and I when we first joined, and the 'shell usually has people on.

So far I have had a good experience on Fabul. I started a while back in like January and I play casually. I have been in a few different linkshells and everyone is very friendly and helpful. I usually just do leves and behests in a party when I am on, and I never have trouble finding people to group with. I have seen a good mix of geographical regions as well, some of my LS is european and there are Japanese people on at all hours of the day.

I too am on Fabul, am American but live in England. Its a good server and has many types of people on it. Our LS has a lot of Europeans and Americans in it (although the leadership is based in England). Lots of variety on Fabul.

Hey Toreleon, what was your character's name in FFXI? I was on Shiva in 2004-2005.

Hi guys,

thanks very much for all the answers! I can't wait to get going again, but I have a PhD thesis to finish first, unfortunately. Bleh :)
I'll definitely consider either Selbina or Fabul.

@garethrogue, I think my main character was called "Tiuri" that time.

What area are you in? I just finished mine last year in cognitive psychology. I waited to start MMOs until I was completely done with school, which is one reason (the main reason) I never played FFXI. Even back then they were notorious for being addictive (I think EverQuest had a much worse reputation than WoW does now, actually).

Fortunately, I'm not finding FFXIV to be that all consuming (unlike WoW, which, when I started several months ago, would draw me in for hours at a time).

Anyone in any linkshells with lots of academics? Might be a good place to find encouragement.

I'm doing mine in medicinal chemistry / drug design. The "addiction risk" is precisely why I'm starting to play after handing in the thesis, which is in two weeks ;)

Fabul and Selbina do appear to be some of the most populated servers along with Besaid.

Personally I find that Besaid have a good mix of both EU and NA population with about 40% of JP.

Besaid is mostlt know because it also has the Role Playing comunity which will open up to new experiecnes if that is something that you are interested in.
