#1 Apr 24 2011 at 6:04 PM Rating: Decent
I just recently bought a computer to play FF 14. The specs on the computer are fine, but i need a solid recommendation for a graphics card. I was looking at the Sapphire 6870.......this game is beautiful and the card costs 209 dollars, if i'm putting up 200 dollars for a card i want to run the graphics at max. Please help I've been dieing to play this game

I run a 6950 which runs the graphics at max. It is only one step up from the 6870. My card does it without a hiccup. My guess would be that the 6870 would as well. That being said I have 2gig mem vs the 1 gig mem on a 6870, but I think it would do it.

My recommendation is the AMD HD 6850. It's the best balance of price/performance I've seen on the market while still delivering top quality performance.

6870 is a wonderful card and you should be able to run it on max with it (or close to it, probably no ambient occlusion) and if you get it off of newegg.com you also get a free copy of Shogun 2: Total War.

get a sapphire 6950 then unlock it to 6970

plays everything maxed

running mine at 900mhz/1400 mhx never goes above 67 on full load. can probably OC it higher but i dont want to mess with voltages

paid $219 for 2gb sapphire 2gb 6950 on newegg and runs like the $500 cards
best investment ever

This is actually a good idea. I have not tried it on my 6950, because I in no way need it. The card runs the game max. However I heard the newer 6950 cannot be unlocked, anyone know if this is true? I had heard only the 1st production run 6950 could be safely unlocked.

The card is a dream to overclock. I have a mild OC on mine 825 now I think, but cool and stable.

if you search around overclock.net in the ATI forums they say which models are compatable with the 6970 unlock. my sapphire card is no longer for sale i just checked.

but if you google and ask around there are still some 6950 models that you can unlock into the 6970. one i know of is the HIS one here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161355
there is also a msi one that is compatible with the 6970 unlock

just gotta read the feedback. they say if it is unlockable or not and the highest rated ones are usualy the unlockable ones

its a little pricy at close to $300 i got this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102914
but it is now out of stock, plus it was the daily deal thingy when i bought it so i paid $219 not $274

but you got to look at it this way. if you pay the $300 for this card and get an unlockable one its basically like paying $300 for a $500-$800 vid card because your literally buying the 6970 which ranges from 500-800+

OC is a dream and it runs cooler OC'd then my old 4870 did non OC'd

This is mine and is swappable to 6970. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125356&cm_re=gigabyte_6950-_-14-125-356-_-Product

Unfortunately also out of stock. These swappable to 6970 seem to be mostly gone, but you may be able to get one at a local microcenter if you have one. Like I said though I have had no reason to swap it to the 6970. I believe what you get are extra shader clocks. I may be wrong it's been awhile since I looked into it. As previously stated if you can find one this is a ludicrous value. It is a gargantuan card though so be prepared for that if you go this route.
