I was just listening over the XIV soundtrack in it's entirety and I'm starting to wonder what the **** they were thinking with some of the song choices they've used. I remember listening to the soundtrack when it was leaked during alpha and getting super excited at what i thought were going to be the town themes. you know - the kind of tunes that create an atmosphere of adventure. Some of the songs on the soundtrack are amazing yet they never appear in game. Some of the best songs are heard for 20 seconds during a cutscene and never heard again.

I can't understand why SE would choose some of the best songs for a 20 second cutscene that some players would hear once in their years of gaming and then choose weak, lackluster music for city/zone themes that players would hear thousands of times for hours on end.

Uldah - I don't hate the current theme but it sounds far too passive to be a town theme, It lacks a hook.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgIeNF9fk-c&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=25 - Sounds like a typical desert-city theme. Nothing amazing imo but still better suited for uldah than the current theme.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dJ3DfCiv4o&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=69 - If not used for Uldah, could possibly be used for Ishgaurd.

Thanalan - At first I thought the dev's screwed up and put the wrong song in the zone. It's an amazing song but it does not fit at all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYWTZNLw6NA&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=49
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6unU7cIHPik&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=63- could both work IMO, or they could use the current Uldah theme, which i think is far better suited to the outdoor dryland setting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCF3vLbtyhQ&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=65

Gridania - Again I don't hate the current theme but I don't think its nearly up to par as any of the city themes in XI.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT1jA6IWa04&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=27 - Is very calming and has that "magical forest" feeling to it that i get from Gridania

Coerthas - The theme, like Thanalan, is great, but i feel that it does not properly set the tone. It seems like it should be the zone music after some sort of poignant plot twist and your characters are wandering the countryside moping about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzVpF2Hz-Yg&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=66 - My personal favorite song of the whole soundtrack, i think it suits the calm green hills of coerthas perfectly. I think it would suit La Noscea too.

Black Shroud - the current theme is too gloomy for my tastes. Again it seems like the music is supposed to be tied in to a certain plot element.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOZl0qz9A1w&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=68 - Not the greatest but I couldnt find any on the soundtrack that i really felt fit with the black shroud.

Limsa - I think that the Limsa music is the best out of all the cities, It's great really.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8doI-AOILxY&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=59 - merely an alternative.

Honorable mentions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DktUk25WsjY&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=64 - Makes me want to go adventuring with friends. Precisely what an MMO is for.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjiRQmqadoY&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=50 - an amazing piece with piano. I'm not sure if this song is used in the story somewhere but if it was i can guarantee i would remember it forever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBgqvJOAa5I&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=31 - Just a real amazing piece that i wish i could hear more often.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK_vVQjtQZo&feature=BFa&list=PLCC08F47C925C651D&index=17 - I'm pretty sure this is in the Limsa Lominsa intro. As the ship is pulling into the city I think. Just an example of an amazing song that users hear for 20 seconds before it is (likely) never to be heard again.

You suggest the Gridanian theme for Ishgard and then you go back and say it's not up to par? The problem with some of the songs is that while they're good at first, they'd get very annoying over time. Especially the one you suggest for Ul'dah.

thanks for pointing that out - was a mistake. I had so many youtube links flying around getting copy/pasted. I don't feel like looking through the 70-odd songs again to find the one i intended to put in, so i'll just remove that link >.>

Also, I think that a catchy/slighty annoying theme is superior to a boring/forgettable theme. San'doria may have the most annoying theme song I've ever heard yet it never fails to put a big smile on my face. I doubt that i'll ever hear any of the current XIV themes 10 years from now and feel much of anything, if i even recognize them.

I love the current Coerthas track. You get that calm/despressing feeling. The land is awesome too. Its like Zitah and Konschat Highlands in one zone.

You think the Starlight Celebration music is better for Gridania's main theme? I agree that the current theme needs to be a bit more "mysterious" (I think that some low reed instruments could assist in that matter), but I cannot help but strongly oppose the use of glockenspiel, metal bells, and music-box instruments in a theme that is supposed to feel organic and densely forested.

Bells are good for serene winter themes: they have a sound that provides clear lines and brightness to a piece, of unity that both breaks the silence and yet enhances it. Bells are very man-made, and therefore also sound orderly. Such clear lines and brightness, however, are not qualities that a magical forest is supposed to exude: a place like Gridania needs instruments that suggest a looming quality, of darkness and obscurity and yet also of bounty and safety - bass clarinets that hoot like owls and resound like far echoes, cushioned by hanging moss: the more nurturing side of nature, in other words.

I couldn't agree more that a lot of the music simply does not fit the surroundings, and not only that but it is god awful repetitive and makes me wanna rip my hair out after a few hours of play. So, most of the time I just keep it off. However, I don't agree with some of your suggestions. I think Coerthas' music is perfect for the environment, and is one of the few exceptions to the game's flawed music. Also I think LL's music is horrible for the city, it is very grand and adventurous yes, but to me just doesn't fit a seaside city, and is the most repetitive of them all. I especially find it annoying at night. Come on, I don't need trumpets and all this grand orchestra crap blaring in my ears when I'm wandering around at 3:00 in the morning. But a lot of those tracks that we don't hear in the game for some reason are indeed amazing, why they didn't utilize them more is beyond me. The one you suggested for Uldah is spot on, I agree that the music for Uldah is too passive and playful in a way, we need something that has a more desert feel to it, obviously, since we're in the desert. Tribal percussion or some arabic sounding stuff fits perfectly. Also Thanalan's music in general is horrible I think and should also be changed to fit the arrid landscape better. I dunno I would love for them to actually address this issue and maybe switch the music around/add more tunes for zones, so I don't have to listen to my own music in it's place all the time.

I remember being slightly disappointed with The Black Shrouds theme. It's more suited for an end game area with it's gloomy feel.

Yeah, when I heard that track without knowing the zone, I thought it would fit an ice palace/cavern.

Also, I'd think this will be Ishgard's theme.

funny you should say that, cuz its always reminded me of this song from littlebigplanet, the intro at least - which was the theme for the snow/ice level.
