The Last Word – Storm over Gridania

The heavens seem ****-bent on inundating Gridania of late. While the Twelveswood is no stranger to willful weather, something is afoot that sits ill with this reporter. Driven by an inner disquiet, I set out on a mission to give shape and form to intangible trepidation.

Ere long, I pick up the trail of irregularity, catching curious whispers on the wind that deaspected crystals have been circulating. Yes, you read true: these crystalline manifestations of aetheric energy are turning up utterly divested of aspect. Even a wee tot could tell you that such a thing is an affront to the very laws of nature.

Perchance this development does not suffice to chill spines, the frightful rumors being propagated by a camp-bound transient could well prompt folk to run for the hills. This shady figure is said to manifest with nary a warning, preach feverishly of impending doom, and then vanish like a phantom only to reappear elsewhere. Though the ramblings of this seemingly touched soul are largely lost to gibberish, such is the zeal with which they are delivered, more than a few citizens are like to be taken by fear.

Far be it from this reporter's intent to incite panic, but if history has taught man aught, it is that we dismiss portentous signs at our peril. Are these incidents merely isolated occurrences? Or are they a dire warning of disaster? This I leave to you, our informed readers, to ponder.

Kipih Jakkya

Dire signs of things to come...

folks over on the official forums are speculating that they are using this little story as a lore-based approach to a Gridania/Black Shroud game makeover. perhaps some kind of storm/fire burns everything down and it is grown anew as a less ****** zone =P

Although I really think the black shroud needs a complete makeover, i doubt it is that high on the devs priority list, and i would imagine a complete zone makeover to take up far too many dev resources that could be better used elsewhere at this point.

Like i said, i really doubt its the case, but it would be nice.......

I don't think it's that bad. There's a lot of interesting places in there, but the zone is just so **** large that a) those places are too far from each other and b) the transitions tunnels between the areas are copy-pasted filler for the most part.

I think they should either make the place more compact and remove most of the filler since it is unnecessary or make the filler parts more varied and interesting, while maybe adding more distinctive landmarks around the place. With a darker theme of course, since the place is on fireh.

I've always hated the maze-tunnel type zones.

Like pashow marshalnds, wajaom woodlands, Zitah (even though its beautiful) in XI.

I would much prefer a forest similar to ronfaure, except with huge trees like the black shroud has now. Open concept Zitah ftw.

Sounds cool, but I really have no idea what this will really pertain to exactly, or how it will be implemented, or why they are releasing this information right now. :(

Pashow, Zitah were no where near both Yuhtunger(I think?) and Yhoater jungles. The map does not even show the paths. However, Black Shroud is by far worst. Can't wait for a make over!

Well, the time for the first battle overhaul is close.... very close in fact. That entails...

Roaming enemies....

Groups of enemies...

Garleans...?

wink wink

I meant "maze-tunnel" zones not in the sense that they were maze-like and difficult to navigate, but in the sense that there is very little open area, and most of the zone is simply paths. The jungles in XI were definitely hard to navigate, but they had a decent amount of open space. The Black Shroud lacks any decent sized open space.

Nah. Garlean Goof-hats.
We want something *sinister*.
Something mysterious, unknown, unspeakable. Some abominations. Some things that defy the laws

When you compare the two, both have around the same amount of openness. Especially when you go to the less popular areas.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_NTtzMykKgeU/TVjWpW0dDSI/AAAAAAAAAoc/jO4vIz1rj5U/s912/ffxivgame_2011_02_11_14_10_24_384.jpg

But the zone is also so much larger than the jungle that the ratio of tunnel to open space is skewed. It's like adding twice as many tunnels to Yhoator while keeping the amount of open space the same.

Well, they mention things that appear, disappear, and appear far away in the passage, maybe they're referring to Ascions? The things from the R30 mission Could be some new HNM in Gridania? It could also be related to the dungeon content somehow, iirc Yoshi said he had planned on sharing concept art of the planned dungeon very soon, this lore could set it up.

If it is a Black Shroud remake, I just hope its more open like the other starting areas...I hate being shoehorned into a zone.

It's still not "open" in the sense i was reffering to - look at the minimap in those screenshots - you are in a network of narrow paths.

I'm betting this blurb is pure storyline, a teaser leading into upcoming missions. The deaspected crystals are a product either or Eikons or the Empire. Looks like Gridania gets hit next by the Empire judging by story, regardless its interesting.

Like a Hyur Centipede?

This seems in line with the Company-related content, as each of those quests sort of hinted that when the shoe drops, Gridania is first in line.

Given that they said in the 1.17a patch notes that they added more Company sidequests, this may be hinting at some sort of timed release as those sidequests are nowhere to be found.

As for this being the restructuring of the Black Shroud, it would be an exiting way to usher in the major version update.

Well there are only 3 things I thought of when I read that article.

The first thing that came to my mind was "why only Black Shroud?"
Second thing "This is prolly a lore based approach on the zone makeover"
Third "Or maybe its just the progression of the main story line"

Other then that tehre is nothing that sounds really reasonable to me.

But yeah lore based zone makeover sounds most likely to me.

After SE telling us that they have a dev team section for each part of the game, I don't think it would take that many resources out of other aspects of the game.

Plus maybe its just a pre event of the makeover of the Black Shroud? Yoshi already said he wants to tighten the feel of threat by the garlean empire so adventurers actually feel like there is something coming. Maybe a devastating attack at Gridania and the region is about to happen and after that attack we will see the "rebuilding" of the area step by step as kind of a world event^^

I take it a lot of you have skipped the main story missions, or no one would be as confused as they are.

The Empire clearly invades Gridania during one of the first 5 or so missions, and one of your tasks is to help a nest of Sylphs to escape and save their seeds.

I'm sure this is a continuation of the invasion.

It is not a Black Shroud makeover. Although, I agree it is a way to generate interest in Gridania probably the least visited of all the areas.

Battle updates is probably a good guess. I think it is most likely they are getting ready to introduce the first instanced content.

Not confirmed. It just seems probable to me.

Seems worth mentioning that a Deaspected Crystal is one of those .dat items that has yet to be used. Unless, of course, someone came across one in their travels.

So to sum it up, The Black Shroud is getting slammed with violent storms, crystals are turning up lacking any trace of an element and some shady charter chills at the camps spewing gibberish then pulls a Houdini.

These teasers keep coming at just the right time for me to get hooked back in.

It's used in one of the missions that brings you to Mor Dhona. It's a key item, and that's why it doesn't have an image. You get them after "planting" lightning crystals at certain "???" points.

Your post also confirms my suspicions that so many people haven't even done the story missions ;_;

And NOOOOO this is NOT to draw interest to Gridania... as I said in my last post, the invasion from the Empire takes place in Gridania IN the missions we already have (and since launch, might I add).

It's not always lightning crystals, it's random....but yea, correct aside from nitpicking that little part...

That's the r34 main quest with the crystals...

Notice that Sephrick doesn't have a job at 34+, when you get that quest, which is also obscure as all **** to get, as you get no warning, no linkshell message and have to enter GRIDANIA'S shopping district to even see the Peasant ward is strangely open to you.

I do agree it seems that people ignore the quest or forget about the story and lore, but cut the man some slack, he didn't grind enough to see that content yet.

Well, personally my highest is Rank 31. I've done the stories I can up to then and currently am working on Toll of the Warden.

I have seen the Garleans in the shroud and played Metal Gear With the Nymhps.

Trouble is, the story is slow, way too spaced out and largely directionless. You have to get to 30+ before there's any real sense of danger?

But the leveling mechanics inhibit us from getting to the next chunk of story before the last soap opera level cut scenes becomes an afterthought.

Where's the sky battles between magitech and dragons from the opening movie?

Granted I've made a personal choice to not really invest the time to level beyond 30 as I don't want to get too attached to any one class in light of the fact that it'll be a different game when the battle system changes occur.

But should we really need to be rank 50 to understand a teaser when the game is going to be overhauled?

ah, I just remember it distinctly because I did it with a friend and I was like "yeah, I wanna see what these NPCs (ones in the cutscene wards) have to say!" and he's like don't worry. Then we get to Mor Dhona and it's like *insert lightning crystal here* and he's like *derp ok* and I'm all "ummmmm... I have 1 crystal" and he's like "that's cool, I only have 1 too". His quest glitched, apparently, and he got back the crystal each time he planted it so he was able to finish it. I, however, was not so lucky and rage quit for like 2 weeks lol.

You don't have to be 50, but even then 30's not too low. I DO agree that they need to make the missions more frequent, because the sense of danger wears off pretty quickly when you're just starting the game and you have to wait fairly large gaps before you can advance to the next part of the story. And even then, it's kind of a boring story so no one really cares...

Haha. I almost skipped on talking to the NPCs the 1st time as well. Read the text that said "You could speak to some nearby people and perhaps learn more" and I thought "Pfft, yea right." But something made me check & I'm glad I did. That was a brutal walk the 1st time to Mor Dhona.

Yeah, I left that part out. We were both non-DoW/M 30s at the time, so it was absurd getting there, and that was the main reason for the rage quit lol. Although, definitely fun... it really gave me a feeling of how massive the world really is. We take it for granted since most only leave town for leves.

That was still one of the more exciting things I did. Poor little r34 weaver Leeloo dodging all that aggro with no sneak/invis & not touching aetherytes along the way so I could return to Grid easier when done. That was actually pretty fun...

I've done all of the main scenario quests. If you have a R50 job, lots of anima to burn, and a few hours to kill, you can steamroll through most of the main scenario pretty painlessly. It's a great way to make gil, but the story is sh*t (compared to anything in XI), none of the quests are particular interesting or fun, and at no point in time is there anything that resembles a "challenge". I really wouldn't recommend that anyone waste their time (or anima) on the main scenario quests, and I certainly won't look down upon people who haven't completed it. I personally couldn't care less about story / lore unless it's exceptionally good or engrossing.

With regards to this new piece of lore, I hope that it's leading up to any or all of the following:

(1) continuation of the main scenario quest line (as long as the new quest(s) are actually enjoyable / challenging / rewarding);
(2) revamp / relaunch / redesign / overhaul of The Black Shroud (pretty zone, horrible design);
(3) introduction of instances and/or dungeons ANYWHERE in Eorzea.

Ideally, this lore is foreshadowing of all of the above: e.g., some world changing event occurs in-game, changes the landscape of the Black Shroud and in the process reveals the entrance to a new dungeon. This dungeon is the venue for a new main scenario quest(s), contains some new NM's, and also acts as the entrance to a new instanced dungeon.

BOOM. In one paragraph I've redesigned a ****** zone, created new quest content, implemented an over-world dungeon that contains NM's, and also has an associated instanced dungeon crawl. Everybody wins.

See how easy that was SE? ><

(1) continuation of the main scenario quest line (as long as the new quest(s) are actually enjoyable / challenging / rewarding);
(2) revamp / relaunch / redesign / overhaul of The Black Shroud (pretty zone, horrible design);

BOOM. In one paragraph I've redesigned a sh*tty zone, created new quest content, implemented an over-world dungeon that contains NM's, and also has an associated instanced dungeon crawl. Everybody wins.

See how easy that was SE? ><

i second all of this.
sure the game right now gives you time to focus alot on lore and hirstory, but there isnt even much of it. FFXI not only had deeper more involved story lines but each cities story line missions from game start had more mission level 1-50 in the first place.

Keep in mind, people, that with my post I was saying that "this confirms my suspicions that people haven't done the story quests". That has nothing to do with the ranks in anyone's signatures. It was simply to say that a lot of people in this thread are commenting about what the letter means, and why the invasion or danger is taking place in Gridania... it's no surprise that a lot of people are completely lost, because they haven't gotten to rank 34 or w/e to do these quests. It just makes sense. That's it. I don't need to be lectured on "well this person has enough sense not to invest time into a terrible game, SO THERE" type ****, I get enough of that already. The truth is, you can get to 34 in less than 5 days with minimal play time... I'm not saying you SHOULD do that, or that you're inferior in any way if you haven't yet; again, I'm JUST saying that it makes perfect sense as to why most people in this thread are confused.

Notice that Sephrick doesn't have a job at 34+, when you get that quest, which is also obscure as all **** to get, as you get no warning, no linkshell message and have to enter GRIDANIA'S shopping district to even see the Peasant ward is strangely open to you.

Actually, there's a little yellow globe in the top right of your screen that's an NPC linkpearl. Whenever you get a new mission, it starts blinking. At that point, you know you should open your main menu and click on "NPC Linkpearl," and someone will tell you where to go to start the mission.

This is explained in the very first Storyline quest. Of course, that was probably a while ago for many of us, so it's understandable that people would forget.

That was a brutal walk the 1st time to Mor Dhona.

Oh, man, yes. Took me like 3 hours of running, dying, trying to kite mobs to different locations so that when I died the next time I could get through, raging when they returned, and a few close calls when I'd get within steps of the next aetheryte and get killed, so I'd have to go back to the last one and try again. Did you know that you can actually get to a crystal, touch it, but if a mob one shots you before you click "Leave," then you return to the previous crystal? I didn't. But I do now.

Poor little r34 weaver Leeloo dodging all that aggro with no sneak/invis & not touching aetherytes along the way so I could return to Grid easier when done.
:O Brutal. Just brutal. I did it solo, running through Coerthas, and must have died 2 dozen times. If I'd had to go back to Gridania every time, I'd still be running.

Of course, after that, I became the designated LS taxi for people on that quest so they wouldn't have to suffer through hours of death weakness.

This is what kills me. People often complain about a lack of distinctive areas and landmarks in Eorzea, compared to FFXI (yes, I do it, too). But the Black Shroud has more of those distinctive landmarks than any other area. There's the glowing tree, the 3 white trees, there's a giant tree surrounded by water, tons of little bridges and lakes, an area where butterflies flutter between flowers, an auditorium, stuff like that tucked away in corners throughout the BS.

Unfortunately, it's such a pain to get around in the BS that people -- myself included -- haven't really explored it much. So people haven't seen them. It's like SE spent the most time creating the BS, and unfortunately built it in such a way that people actively avoid spending time there. I understand why they did it. It's a forest, so it's supposed to be confusing and easy to get lost in. But it's a shame that people never see it.

As for the OP, I don't think they're going to change the layout of the BS anytime soon. I imagine they're focusing on the battle system changes and content first. Then they'll get to the significant amount of work it will take to re-do an entire zone.

My guess is that the post is about the growing threat from the East. (Yes, I know they've already invaded, but I would imagine that threat is going to be ramping up significantly as the storyline continues.) And I'd guess that the Deaspected crystals are going to be used in the Materia system.

the story is sh*t (compared to anything in XI)

The intro CS alone beats rank 1-5 missions pretty painlessly.

Glad you enjoy watching things, you could always switch your sub over to Netflix. The rest of us want to do things.

sorry but cut scenes are one of the many staples of the FF series and something most other MMOs very sadly lack. keep up the time consuming CSs SE, you have many fans that like them.
