Does this game have any potential? (Not sure if I should Re-Follow

From the guys who are still playing do you guys think the game has any potential in the future? I want to come back to the game and give it another shot but just do not want to dedicate XXX hours if it’s just going nowhere...

Or should I just stick to going back to XI?

I recently rerolled XI and I am generally having fun although a few of the things that annoyed me in the past continue to annoy me (but they are generally easier to surmount).

As for XIV I am not going to bother with it again until PS3 release at the earliest. Sure, it's free to play at the moment, but I don't want to invest any more time in it until I see where they take it.

Potential is huge. Don't know if they will use it all yet. Looking good so far, but if playing a game you may not like in the future is wasting time to you I'd have to suggest you wait.

Ah, has much been actually done since release?

Yeah If I start XI I would be doing a fresh start because I can’t for the life of me remember any of my old account details.

Quite a number of changes have been made - if you haven't played since the first month they should stand out quite a bit.

I quit before they added the sidequests and such - but those do exist now, and the lag has been considerably if not entirely fixed, market wards are searchable, player repairs were easier to come by (because of player icons that show someone is seeking repair) - there are new recipes and more NMs and such

I am still just too burnt out on it to suggest anyone pick it up yet. There are changes being made all the time - it just seems worthwhile to wait it out - for me anyway.

That said if you haven't played as much - if you are not burnt out on leveling etc, you might find it a great time to join up.

I think it all depends on what you are looking for. I haven't seen enough content in the game to lure me back yet.

*

As for XI, rerolling is easier than ever - exp is way faster than it ever was and a lot of the new upper tier gear seems to be easier to get hold of than stuff in the past. It can still be tedious sometimes but that's just the way mmos are, it seems like.

I would wait until at least the battle system is fixed (I think it will be in May?). After that I don't think the game will be "a waste of time" like it is now (imo). I plan on re-rolling if the new battle system is good because I don't really like the art style they chose on the gear for elezen (the ears sticking out of the helmets and the underwear gear looks stupid, imo). The game is a lot better than it was at launch, but if you're like me and the battle system is the #1 priority for you, then I would wait.

the answer is no.

Square historically has been stubborn to make meaningful changes. This game will see some amounts of fixes, but it won't be enough or at a quick enough pace and it will die 1 year after the failed PS3 release. Don't waste your time, go play Rift.

14 is free right now, so feel free to experience it, but you're basically paying 40 bucks to find out why something sucks so bad.

I already have the game; I just don’t want to through the hassle of installing and starting up again if I find it’s what I left 5 months ago.

It does not hurt to ask the opinions of current players :|

Many of the current players are waiting on the revamped battle system along with the content that's supposed to be tied into it. However, there are still a number of pretty significant changes that are also in the works. If they pull off a good battle system though and companies are fun, that will be a pretty big milestone on the game's road to recovery.

The game has a lot of potential. SE is just working to turn it around to a more playable state, while at the same time trying to realize that potential. They've got a lot on their plate, that's for sure...

Personally I think your approaching your decision from the wrong point of view.

Do not play the game because if might have a future or not.

If you're gonna play FFXIV or any other game do it because you enjoy doing it at that time. If you're gonna be making it a chore to play now so just you can enjoy the game in the future then there is a good chance you will just get annoyed at the game now and not feel like playing it in the future when it might be good or not.

FFXI started the same way if not worse as XIV started now. How much potential do you think XI had and actually used of it?

That alone will answer your question. Nobody can make any assumptions of whats to come, but just compare with similiar incidents(if not identical lol) in the past made by the same people at the same thing.

If XIV only gets close to what XI has been for me, I'll happily invest my time atm to wait for that. Seeing as it took almost over 1 year for XI to get anywhere, I think we're at a good pace on XIV.

I find myself taking breaks from XIV every 2 weeks or so. I enjoy playing it, but then I reach the point where I can clearly see how stupidly some things have been executed in the game itself and anger crawls in and I have to put it down. Lose all desire to play, or even turn on to check the market wards at least.... When I start to miss the people is when I go back to playing, or if there's an update. This is a hard game to love, for me.
As far as I'm concerned, they really need some drastic changes, adding stuff you can do quickly, with ease, without the unnecessary wait for actions to be executed.... Think of; fishing on-the-go for example, something you can enjoy for 10-15 minutes quickly, and less tediously than the way it is now.... or stuff like that. More 'quick', more casual, more instant fun (and I don't mean they should chop out the 'hardcore' elements of the game). It's just such a nerve-testing game I'm having with XIV, and seeing how much I can put up with it.

If I were to really give you any advice, I'd say you would probably enjoy it now, for a while, and then quit playing it again. But I might be wrong.... If you got the will, install it, try how it suits you for a few days and make a judgement yourself. It's really hard telling 'what's good' or acceptable to anyone else, as we're all different personalities....

The game has more potential than any game out there. Simply because the devs are willing to do so much to change it.

That isn't to say it's something worth a praise though. The game really needs the changes its getting.

In short, I'd say that following this game and seeing whether it can meet it's potential or fall short- is entertaining in itself. Just don't get your hopes too high, since the chance for fail is there and will be for quite some time.

Letters from the Producer really feel like version updates for me right now. Same for simply reading the patch notes. I am enjoying just following the game even if I don't play it much. It's just one big question mark that can change immensely in the coming months, and man is that thought exciting.

@ Briker:

If you think that what we have in the game at the moment is not enough for a 10-15 min quick log in and log out then I think you're not in the wrong game but in the wrong type of game... you might find something more to your taste in Flash games and such.

While I agree with the 'experience it yourself' opinions of some, I'd caveat that with telling you not to be expecting drastic improvements to at least half of the basic gameplay functionality. At least from a veteran MMO standpoint. After playing Rift for a month or so, and then logging back into XIV the other day, the only things I truly noticed were sidequests and minor improvements to various systems. There really hasn't been anything that would qualify as astounding that's fixed or implemented yet. The sad part is that we're rapidly approaching the year mark of the game's launch, and there's yet to be any word on PS3, how they plan to get players to return, or any hint of expanding the content beyond dungeons.

Boy am I sick of responses like this in this forum. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THIS GAME AND DO NOT PLAY IT, THEN DO NOT COMMENT UPON IT IN THE FORUMS!!! If you do play and have some issues with it, that is understandable, but if you are coming into these forums just to bash the game soley for the sake of bashing it, then just go away. Us dedicated players of the game do not need to be assaulted with negativity everytime we peruse the forums to find some information. In response to your response: Don't waste MY time and go play Rift.

People posting... in a PUBLIC FORUM!?!?

The nerve of some people... giving opinions and all....

As for the OP... I played this game a ton.... then I stopped.... I strongly agree with the poster that mentioned you should be playing the game for what it is right NOW... not what people THINK it will be in the future... the reality is that none of us know when this future will be... and I think a vast majority got sick of promises that left us trailing for 7 months....

As for how the game currently is right now... If you have the urge, plus you've already bought it... may as well install and check it out....? But there is no way I would spend a dime on it..

Game has improved a lot since release. On release date, I would give the game a grade of D/D- , and would be an F if it weren't for the graphics. Lack of the most basic stuff like sorting your inventory along with the major UI lag everywhere - game pretty much deserved the widespread bad reviews it got from the press on launch date.

I think it has improved to the point where I would give it a B-/C+ ; it is much more enjoyable to play today than it was at launch - although considering how terrible it was at launch I know that's not really saying much lol.

I'm looking forward to the new battle system and am optimistic about the changes ahead. I have never been a fan of the current battle system (IMHO, "spammy", "arcade-y", non-strategic) and welcome the fact that they are planning a revamp of it. There are the new areas to look forward to, chocobos & airships (someday at least ...), and although probably not for a while - new classes/jobs. (Without revealing any spoilers about the story quest, I'm quite certain at this point that Summoners will be appearing in this game as would be expected for a FF game...).

I know the lack of an Auction House turned off a lot of gamers early on - the devs have mentioned this is being looked into. It's a shame the original dev team made so many mind-boggling decisions that probably lost quite a bit of players (good riddance to them...) - hopefully the changes ahead will bring some back...

He never said he didn't play. But, I play, and I agree with him. I suspect that Garethrogue's prediction about the game's future is about right.

I'm really, REALLY hoping that SE manages to overcome the rather long odds and get this game into good shape in time for it to matter, but I also recognize that my hopes aren't necessarily very smart.

I find the game enjoyable. It has some annoying qualities; lack of content being the most annoying (to me anyway). I think this game has great potential. As others have mentioned XI was wasn't very good when it started and really did not get a lot of content until the PS2/RoZ release. I am expecting the same with XIV. Right now I find it enjoyable that I can put down the game for a week and not feel like I am somehow falling behind. I always felt like I was behind in XI. Ultimately it is up to the DEVs and I think given time (which I am willing to wait) this game could be outstanding.

The other thing that does bother me about the game to this point is an absolute lack of community in game. I would like to something implemented to promote a sense of community. I am sure the DEVs will come up with something. They kept me happy for years after the PS2 release of XI so I have no reason to turn from that opinion.

FF14 is okay in small doses, and since it's free (if you've got the initial purchase out of the way, or a buddy pass), there's not much harm in rolling a character.

"Potential" is what the game currently brokers in. It's presently a fixer-upper that's being remade under a new architect. If you take it in as an under-construction project, you may even enjoy trying to shape its future on the official forums. But be warned, this isn't something that will be ready in days or weeks, but months. Keep that in mind if you want to keep your frustration level in check.

I agree with several of the posts here, the best way to view this game as it stands is that it is in an indefinite state of beta testing right now. There are changes and a lot of them are good, but it's basically like putting a band-aid on a cut-off finger, they've patched a few little things, but the big changes are still to come, so realistically, Autumn/Winter 2011 you will probably see a game that is coming into it's own.

Potential is different depending on the person you ask. The only real opinion that should make THAT much of a difference is yours. Since the game is free to play, why not just install it and try it out so you can get first hand experience? If it's been a while since you've played the game, I think you'll find it surprising at how much better it is compared to what it was when it was first released.

The game has potential yes. However, I honestly do not that it will ever get the chance to meet that potential. Both TOR and GW2 will be released sometime this year, both of which will vastly overshadow FF14, so I doubt new players will be joining. So unless this game can somehow become something worth paying for withing the next few months, I see it becoming as dead as DCUO is.

SE for the love of god has to hire someone who knows how to design a user interface. This game is really frustrating to play STILL, yes they made some changes but the interface still is clunkly and feels counter-intuitive.

Alot of people are waiting to see what they do with the new battle system, I think that update is going be huge cause there's a full month and a half-two months before it goes live. It's prob going to be a make it or break it patch for a lot of people.

There's def. potential since the game is so BAD...

I just picked up an official copy of the game, with the special ingame item (glasses) for £6 off Amazon.co.uk. The game is free to play, and to be honest, for six quid, it could be totally crap and I would not care, as that isn't even money to me.

The game is very good, but only because I see where it will go, and not how it is now. It is quiet ingame and people seldom seem to want to respond when you ask for help, but I believe this is because of people not knowing it is currently F2P.

I like it and am enjoying the levelling, and it's worth trying out for free.

If they implement the changes they have promised, I will stick with it, if not, no skin off my nose, I have rift and WoW too :)

Really? It's back up to $40 USD on the American Amazon site. I bought it when it was $30 and figured that was a bargain. I don't think I got any special in-game item, either.

I'm putting more faith in TERA than FFXIV right now really... when you look at the quality of other modern games compared to XIV the difference is just plain to see. I'm continually perplexed by SE's game design choices and how they don't seem to consider what's available in competing titles overseas. I guess it can't be helped, seeing as how SE seems to have no domestic competition when producing high budget online titles. Popular Western titles seem to be totally unknown in the country.

Even the engine itself seems beyond redemption; other games of similar graphical settings run on much lower system requirements much more smoothly.

More importantly, nothing in this game seems epic like the fights below. Can anyone really say the recently released NMs even compare?

Ok so I have a few more hours under my belt now, and following some extremely stellar assistance from my new (and very well established) Linkshell, they took me through some basics and taught me crafting.

Crafting.... is AWESOME! It is by far the best item creation system I have seen in any game. It takes the random number generation system from FFXI and improves on it in every way. Basically you start by kneeling down with your chosen crafting device out (im an Alchemist so I place down a little metal container with a hole in the top) and you then choose your materials. You choose which weapon you are going to use to craft the item, and enter into the gauntlet.
The little light on the top of the device glows white to start with, which means your next step has a high chance of success, and the step you take has 3 options:

1) Normal Quality: Basic craft, high success rate on this stage
2) Rapid Synth: Faster than above, high chance of fail, but results in higher progression through the craft
3) Focus on Quality: Slow, but higher chance of getting a high quality increase
4) Wait: Allows you to wait (lowering durability) to see if your little light will change

The light can be one of 4 things, White for high success chance, Yellow for medium success chance, Red for low, and flashing for random chance.

Each time you progress, your durability drops and your quality will increase or decrease depending on success or fail of your chosen step. You repeat these steps until you either break it (Durability 0) or complete it. The higher your quality at the end of the synth means the higher your chance of HQing the item.

Had a tonne of fun last night playing this little slot machine, and will definately be working on progressing crafts.
