While I'm just ask irked as anyone right now about the PSN's outage *grumbles something about wanting to play MW2*, one would need to be pretty naive to think that the PSN is going to be gone forever. There's just no way they'd allow that to happen.

You're saying like because of Wikileak, US government will be shutdown forever. Which is, impossible.

You're saying like because of bad analogies, internet will be shutdown forever. Which is, impossible.

I think the main problem is a legal issue. Sony may have to stop the PSN service in certain countries to ensure legal proceedings go well (ex. they get sued. keep PSN up. PSN gets hacked again. Screwed much) or they might get told by regulatory agencies in certain areas or countries that unless they do certain things they aren't allowed to have PSN or store user information.

So it is a possibility (although unlikely) that areas such as europe might get excluded from PSN due to legal reasons or during a legal trial or investigation. The fact that PSN had been hacked or taken down multiple times before they major incidence contributes to this.

Remember, this isn't so much a "we got hacked" issue as it is a "we released personal info from millions of people to hackers due to inferior security systems". In order to keep PSN up in a lot of areas they will have to proove they have fixed security issues so it won't happen again. And hiring an external firm may not cut it.

A US Senator is supposedly asking Sony some hard questions too, but, generally speaking, the government wants to work with businesses, not shut their services down. They'll find a way to work it out, hopefully with increased oversight.

This has just become a household meme, comma splices and all.

Well, PSN is coming back later this week (partially). I expect that the events of the past two weeks will have no long term impact on the PS3. Grumpy people will be grumpy about something else a week from now. Lawsuits and government investigations of the security breach will go on, but no one will care after service is restored unless it impacts them directly.

Yeah, because we need more oversight from a government that isn't capable of basic things like keeping a balanced checkbook. The government is only capable of doing one thing: Making matters worse.
