I've been watching FFXIV since release and love how SE is handling changes to the game thus far. Having looked around quite a bit, however, I couldn't find information on the nature of level caps.

My experience with raising level caps has been largely negative up until this point. After XI raised the level cap I was turned off having given it a try and canceled my subscription. I then moved on to WoW and experienced the same thing with the release of Cataclysm.

Basically, my question is, does anyone have any information regarding upcoming expansions or plans to raise the level cap in FFXIV? I have tried to find information on it but have been unsuccessful. I understand it's entirely possible there is none out at this point and that if they do raise it in the future, they may do so while still retaining balance, fun, and enough content to do.

Are you asking if they'll raise it anytime soon? They probably won't, seeing as how the bigger focus is on making the game fun before anything else through a myriad of fixes, additions and overhauls.

Will they raise it eventually? Yes...it's inevitable. A player can only tolerate so much horizontal growth before they get bored.

They better think of some new skills before they raise the cap, would be so lame learning Provoke III or Riot Blade II at R60 -_-

Assuming the game succeeds, there will obviously be a level cap raise. I wouldn't worry about the first level cap raise (or possibly the first few raises) as the game was planned out with that in mind.

Its not really that there is a level cap increase, its WHEN there is a level cap increase. When FFXI was first released, the level cap was also 50. Then it went up to 55, then to 60, then 70, then 75. It stayed at 75 for several years. Content was added, jobs were balanced, spells optimized, subjobs and battle strategies perfected, HNM's, all balanced for level 75. Then with the recent increases up lvl 99, everything optimized for 75 became a joke, subjob abilities that were never available before now were, end-game gear was now worthless, you get the idea.

I wouldn't be concerned about the first few level cap increases in FFXIV. They were all I'm sure (well I guess I can't be sure of anything in this game...) planned for.

There are apparently abilities in the game code up to level 99. There are also additional jobs. They just haven't been implemented yet. So it appears that they have already made preparations to raise the level cap eventually. Of course, all those things may change now that we've got a new development team in charge.

I've heard -- but haven't seen any confirmation from SE -- that they initially made the level cap 50 so that PC players wouldn't get too far ahead of the PS3 players. I'd say there's at least a possibility that they'll raise the level cap at PS3 release. But again, that's just a guess.

Considering there's at least one player who's already got all level 50s (Arc Tea) I'm guessing that there's at least one player who'd like them to hurry up and raise the level cap. :D

The same was true for Final Fantasy XI though, but they later changed the levels at which you learn the skills to be under the cap (Blizzaga IV was originally a level 100 spell). They did indeed raise the cap in FFXI, but for the longest time the cap was settled at 75 with many abilities being moved from level requirements to merit points instead. It would not surprise me to see similar things done with FFXIV.

I'm still holding a slim hope that the ancient magic spells (Flare, Flood etc) will become the harbingers of destruction they should be. And hopefully without the weird timed detonation.

There's a screaming lack of content between ranks 1-50 if you think making that range even wider the problem is only going to get worse. Even in XI I sometimes felt like I'm restricted to do only secondary stuff until I reach the cap.

I really hope they won't go the WoW way with the level cap increasing every expansion. There's nothing I hate more than seeing months or years of hard work become instantly obsolete because of new content. It's the reason why I quit FFXI before Abyssea came out, I never understood the logic behind that move, after spending so many years fine tuning content old and new for the 75 cap.

There's no doubt in my mind the cap won't remain at 50 forever, but I hope once they settle on a future cap, I'm guessing it'll be anywhere from 75 to 100, that they'll stick to it and work on releasing challenging content for that cap instead. Raising it only in an effort to artificially lenghten the life of the game would be a huge turn-off for me.

Yeah it's more or less this that I've come to experience. Raising a cap tends to make all the previous content obsolete and they then need to make enough new content each expansion or cap raise to keep people occupied. In XI with a multi-event linkshell I almost always experienced planning of events that did say, sky for 3 months then would switch off to sea for 3 months, then perhaps Dynamis and so on. I rarely saw people repeat the same content for 2 years straight until the next expansion.

Perhaps this was because of the linkshells and people I chose to hang out with. I know currently the lack of content is from using time and resources to get the game into a more functional state. Judging from the replies so far, it does sound like they are planning on raising the cap in the future. I guess I'll just have to hope if they design the future of the game with this in mind it won't be an issue as it was with XI because the cap wasn't raised for so long. That and provide more than a small amount of content after a cap raise to do, as seems to be the case with WoW.

Wrong, raising the cap will only make absolete End Game content, since that at the moment is 3 Guildleves and 5 open world NMs that wont be such a big loss. Lets see what the new dungeons bring...
