327MB and the rising of the seventh moonFollow

I've been speculating and felt the need to sort of write it out so I can forget about it and focus on real work for the rest of the day, lol.

The file size for XI's upcoming patch recently was announced. In 104.3MB the devs are delivering the following:

- New BCNM battles and related items.
- The new Voidwatch area, related NMs, NPCs and items.
- A new augment system for synergy and, again, related items.
- Grounds of Valor (similar to Fields of Valor, but in dungeon areas).
- Treasure Caskets added to new zones.
- Revamped mob placement including higher level mobs deep within unused low level zones.
- Job adjustments.
- A new trigger system for certain HNMs

1.17a left some folks scratching their heads. Was this really the remaining 30%?

One thing of not though, is that at about 327MB, 1.17a was larger than 1.17 and included only:

- Some sidequests.
- The 3D party size effect.
- A change to the size of an HP bar.
- Changes to the gamepad functions.
- Music fade changes.

Obviously, we've already witnessed some unannounced additions. The weather, lack of music and the mysterious GM NPCs that warn for or against upcoming events related to the Seventh Umbral Moon.

I've just been wondering if the patch notes were only the tip of the iceberg as far as additions to the game go?

Obviously we'll have to wait for Monday to find out, but I get the feeling the events may be bigger than we're expecting.

I think some of it is changes or items to facilitate changes that are upcoming. But I would like to think they found a way to trick the .dat miners and surprise us all... fingers crossed.

You should also consider this game is graphically more advanced, thus the texture sizes and everything will probably be larger than 11's.

I was thinking that but what textures like that were implemented? you have a HP bar, sidequests, music, party effect... not 300mb odd

I do think something big is coming

Is there anyone that even .dat mines XIV?

I haven't seen any results since Rapture got their cease and desist.

I totally would if I could learn how.

Also, I do realize how much more there is graphically, but 1.17a was significantly larger than any other patch. I suppose my only purpose in showing the XI info was to show some solid numbers compared to the meat of the content.

Supposition 1 : the update replaced some big files (but the actual change in them was small)
But there aren't a lot of big file in the client (found 19 files bigger than 10mo, only 3 bigger than 20mo... well there is actually 1 big file of 600mo, maybe it was involved?)

Supposition 2 :

Come mid-May, the vanguards of the Grand Companies will be the first to brave Eorzea’s newly discovered dungeons. Their preliminary reports will be made available on the Grand Companies page on the Lodestone, so be sure to check it out!

(Letter from the Producer IX)

The gates of the dungeons have been downloaded and will appear mid-May and we'll see the vanguards of the Grand Companies leaving the towns and going to the dungeons (since it seems they've taken a liking to actually show in game what's they mention on lodestone)

Great info, GenzaiKawakami!

I suppose it might stand to reason that we might see an event next week that reveals the entrances to these dungeons with some related quests.

They did use the Company-related sidequests tag in the patch notes, but none have been found yet to my knowledge.

Then in mid-May, one week or so later, we'd get the reports about the dungeons.

Speculatively, of course.

Big patches might not mean anything unless the developers are working to make the patch sizes only as large as absolutely necessary.

Each patch could carry a lot of redundant code, textures, etc.

600mb = opening movie :) Rename to .avi and you could play it if you have the right codecs :D As for the rest of it I'm not quite sure :(

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

I do some dat mining but I have to make my own program eventually since the current tools still can't fully read everything/lack of updates. It does seem like they make us redownload some files since the majority of XIV's patches weren't anywhere near as big as this, but there are a lot of things added/updated/changed that aren't put into play in the game yet, for example there's a few new sets of scale armor that have no stats or repair material to them, which seems to mean they aren't craftable yet.

My impression is that 1.17a replaces 1.17 with some extra content, meaning that should someone still be on 1.16, he directly downloaded 1.17a instead of getting both. End result is a bloated patch with only ~30mg of new data for most of us, but less download and patch steps for older returning players.

I honestly don't think they followed through on the original estimates. Yoshi-P's original wording was about file size with the 70/30 split, so it's anyone's guess what the deal is.

Either 1.17a redownloaded 1.17 or they held something back and released it in the later patch.

Quote:
Patch 1.17 contains an upcoming seasonal event slated for April. If we keep all of the other initially planned content, however, we wouldn’t be able to have the patch ready in time to coincide with Eas—errr, said seasonal event in the real world. So we’ve reduced the volume of patch 1.17 down to about 70% of its original size, and pushed the remaining 30% over to 1.17a. This way, all of the content can be released with minimal delay in between, and it will also allow us to get this holiday event released in time (don’t worry, there are no bells in this one).

Math, and guesses, and and and... we're all pretty sure on the 8th or 9th depending on your location the next phase of whatever is going on begins.

i think its the first day of the 7th umbral age or something. bassically people are estimating the official arrivals of the grand companies at the start of the new age which is supposed to start next week.

In my opinion, the fact that they have generated any level of excitement at all is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Each person that is hopeful for this type of information is one less person ripping every aspect of the game apart.

Heck yeah! I knew there had to be some more bell-related content on the way!

Golden bells alone do not make a Golden age.
