Seer's Cowl vs. Loyalist Briaud/Divining HatFollow

Okay so I am crunching numbers on these NM drops and still can't decide which is better. Obviously Seer's Cowl is 5 ranks higher than the other pieces and 1 less inventory space. Both my CON and THM are in the low to mid 20's so I'm preparing a run on one of them. Any comments on which set up is better? Both sets look pretty cool

Seer's Cowl

DEF - 117
MDEF - 121
EVA 35
MND 4, PIE 4, MP 30, Magic Potency 4, Magic Accuracy 4

Loyalist Briald and Divining Hat

DEF - 88
MDEF - 129
EVA - 47
INT 3, MND 5, PIE 5, MP 18 Magic Accuracy 2

Loyalist Briaud/Divining Hat until 35, then Seer's Cowl 35+.

Seer's Cowl has better stats (MP, Mag. Acc, Mag. Pot), which should matter but doesn't actually make much of a difference in game.

It's sort of specific to what you will be doing. I always wore a cowl because of the def and when soling you sometimes need that extra. The extra MP in the hat/Briald is nice but not necessary at all. Like akirussan says.. stats don't really make much difference so def is worth more in some cases. I would get both if you can, they are not too hard to get.

50THM/37CON here...I snagged both and I've tested both sets a good bit in the field. I can conclusively state, with no metrics or supporting data, that it's a tie ><

Really though, I haven't seen enough data on (Magic Acc. v. PIE) or (Magic Potency v. INT) to make any real conclusions. As a caster, you probably don't have much DEX, so you aren't dodging much (and I'm not sure how much the EVA on gear is going to help you dodge). I guess DEF makes sense if you soloing a lot. Magic DEF absolutely makes a big difference for certain mobs (but most mobs you can avoid their AoE altogether with good positioning).

In conclusion, wear what you want: *** pirate outfit v. creepy "eyes wide shut" gear. It's a WIN-WIN.

I agree here, the Defense is definitely a better choice, at least until they fix the stats.

another thing you have to take into consideration however trivial it may be is cowl is +1 inventory, and -1 (pieces i have to repair) :)

I wouldnt say stats do NOTHING..... but im of the opinion that the attributes STR DEX etc do way less than hard stats like Acc, M.Acc etc. So thats how I choose my gear. Evasion and M.DEF tend to be high on the same gear while being low on Defense. So I usually stack up M.DEF and EVA along with HP and M.ACC.

I also think STR DEX PIE rings are for crafting only. 3 Silver or Pearl rings are the best, Darksilver if you are doing a Hybrid (casting melee) and use those 3 rings with a Electrum Choker.

i use 2 different gear combos at the moment as i do not have a seers cowl:

for magic DD: bliault + nighthwak visor
for healing: bliault + divining hat

the divining hat doesnt really have any other stats but for curing with little pie so i use the nighthawk visor that gives an additional 2 magic accuracy.

as others have said though the difference probably isnt noticeable at all, so just wear what you like better, at least until the day someone crunches the numbers.

I really hate when I see people use Shield of the Savage on a mage. It's one of the worst ideas you can have. What would drive you to do this? "That **** plank shield" is the best shield in the game for casters by a long shot.

Huh? What difference does it make other than looks? What am I missing?

The magic accuracy granted by the Square Ash Shield and similar shields is completely superior under the current stat system to any other shield that a mage can use.
