Copied from an update description for FFXI:

Quote:
[3] Battling Voidwalkers
Each Voidwatch operation takes place at one of three predetermined “planar rifts,” weak points in the fabric of space. Enemy strength and spoils obtainable will not be affected by the choice of rift.

Seriously, SE, you gotta be kidding.

(Fully aware that this is neither a FFXI nor RIFT forum, I thought this is funny enough to warrant mentioning ^.^/)

Simply saying the word "rift" is now considered advertising for the game?

That does seem...somewhat "influenced" by Rift.

I heard there is a time machine at the Trion Worlds headquarters, and they used it to go back in time and actually invent the word Rift.

Its an opening to another plane. There's only so many ways it can be referred to. A planar... opening? A planar... gap? A planar... hole?

It sure is inspired by rift if not a ripoff.

Does that mean Trion are giving free advertisement to Palladium Books' RIFTS roleplaying system?

X-zone, Final Fantasy used the concepts of rifts in their games long before this thing you call "Rift" was even born.

Considering how much Rift shamelessly ripped from other games, I think we'll let this one go.

Yeah, not every game can be as original as one with catgirls, elves, and magic.

They all borrow/rip off each other, some pull it off better than others. Bias definitely plays a factor too. I know if something from one of my favorite games/movies/songs, etc. is used in something else I happen to like & it's done well then I'm thinking "That's pretty cool". If it's done poorly or used in something I don't care for then..."Hey they ripped that off from such & such!! Unoriginal *****!" = D

Played Rift a few hours. Don't like it much. The game feels flat; the NPCs don't even look at you while giving important quests, just a window pups up tells you what to do and what the rewards are. After that, follow the indicator on the map to kill a few mobs and you are done. Go follow the indicator again to see another poker face NPC again for the next step… not much involvements and exploring. To me, Rift feels more like a RTS than RPG. FF always gives you good CS and interesting music, besides, the attentions to details are second to none (costume, emotion…etc), which really make me feel like I am part of the fantasy world. Now only if XIV crash less...I really like the XIV.

...and those are just the ones that come to mind immediately. "Rift" was inevitable--I'm surprised it took as long as it did.

TROLL ALERT!

How did your begining experience go with FFXIV? Hard to find NPCs, no map locations, no idea how to do a quest, no instuctions on how to do simple things in the game (did you forget the player base had to ask for those things?). How does "window pops up and tells you what to do and what the rewards are" Different than FFXI's quests? Oh right the fact you have to run the same quest in FFXIV 20-30 times to level up and not in Rift. Do FFXIV's NPCs not look blank? Last time I looked the NPCs in the AG all look like they have a poker face.

Your mention of FFXIV giving good CS, you must be talking about all that text you have to read during cut scenes, without voice overs. I love the font too.

I find your argument a little hard to believe is all... but I do believe you when you talk about the crashes, nothing like resetting your market ward character like a 100 times...

But if you are right, if you are looking for music and exploring, nothing beats FFXI... you have the whole sever to yourself.

It's ok if you don't like Rift but your explaination of why seems a bit forced.

I do think it is in poor taste for Zam to advertise Rift in other game forum groups... but hey can you blame them? SE isn't doing any advertising. Money rules, always.

Stuff!

Considering this is a FFXIV board, you can start with the assumption that people who post it love the FFXI and FFXIV philosophy of MMO design (they may dislike FFXIV as it turned out, but that's another point entirely). You can probably safely assume that if they like this design style, it means that Theme-park MMOs like WoW and Rift aren't their cup of tea.

Perhaps, someday, instead of calling someone a troll and getting the pitchforks and torches, you'll realize that some people actually don't like the way WOW/Rift works, and do actually enjoy the way Square tries to build their games.

I know, I know, it's crazy talk. We should all be carbon copy of one other. The fact I like vanilla ice cream means that EVERYONE should enjoy it, and those who DON'T SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH.

Or maybe you get to eat as much strawberry ice cream as you want, and I eat my vanilla ice cream. Then we both win.

Also, the OP's point was that Square are using the term RIFT in their game. Nothing to do with Zam's ads.

When all else fails just call it a "Tachyon". Toss in some other techno-double-speak and you're golden.

How in the **** could anyone not be a fan of the 'Lets develop a console MMO, port it to PC, and then release that version; a year before it's launch-ready, two years before the PS3 version and 3 years after PS3 is relevant' approach? /files tusks

Difference being that the graduates who moved on to SE were shuttled by the shorter bus? Moogle helmets?

Pretty much this, Its possibly the least innovative game genre out there (Madden probably wins that award), and it seems to have the least accepting of change fans. For as much complaining about copying I hear, I hear so much more complaining that MMOs are not as good as they were 8-10 years ago.

Gamers are funny like that. That's when I really do feel bad for SE and their attempts to actually listen to fan complaints/suggestions on this game. Because they go from one extreme to the complete opposite. Many would've been happy with a nicer looking XI remake. Others wanted something new.

One of the other games I've played a lot of recently is Fallout: NV which is almost exactly like Fallout 3 in terms of UI, controls, etc. But in the desert instead of D.C. and with new characters/stories. Sure enough when I checked out a NV forum for the **** of it there was all kinds of ranting & raving about how awful it is because it's just like Fallout 3. = D
