Welcome to the game.

Some tips)

Start in ul dah. That is where 80% of the people are usually. Just go to the camps there with a few leves and ask if anyone wans to team up.

To buy level 10+ gear you want to go to the market wards. In uldah I beleve it is directly west of the crystal in town. There is a search feature that lets you browse gear by type.

As far as european servers I'm not sure. I'm on fabul and often party with europeans. Once you get rank 20ish you will end up partying a lot more and have more interactions with others so it will be easier to meet people

Not sure about which servers being dominated by certain regions, but the ones with the highest populations show up at the bottom of the server list with 3 chocobos. Selbina, Gysahl, Figaro & Mysidia should be in that group I think. Sometimes even on the crowded servers people are pretty quiet in this game though.

As for equipment, the game isn't extremely friendly on new players. NPC prices get crazy and most players will focus on selling more profitable gears. That means tons of high rank stuff available and lower rank gear becomes rare & often overpriced. To somewhat make up for that you can get by easily without being properly equipped early on. You level up so quickly in the beginning that sometimes I would suggest passing on overpriced equipment you'll soon want replaced anyway.(Normally I wouldn't give advice that promotes half-assing, but you can get away with it early on)

I'd suggest the database here for looking up equipment and finding what you need. It also lets you know if an NPC sells it, where they're at, and for how much. Quite useful. You might find the guides on here helpful as well.

Edit-
Also, it seems rough at first because you don't make much gil on the opening leves & such, but as you move to higher ranks it becomes much easier to make gil.

Let me know your character name and I will check in with you this weekend. I often play late nights on the weekends (I'm in the eastern us timezone).

1 - It's in the middle (between LL and Gridania)

2 - It has the easiest layout to Navigate

3 - It has arguably the best R40 leves

4 - I'm from there

To the OP:
I play on Mysidia and there are shouts -all- the time, but mostly from the JP population. Even though they are the dominant region for Mysidia there are still english speakers everywhere at all times. You can /and will see JP LS recruitment shouts at all times of the day no matter what timezone you are in. o/ That's how busy it is. o.ob

I stopped playing around Christmas time. Came back three weeks ago. Shouted for a new LS and got three tells within 10 minutes.

On the question of why Ul'dah is more populated than the other cities, I have to agree it must be the simplified layout. In Limsa and Gridinia you have to navigate left turns/right turns/elevation changes. Limsa is beautiful and Grid is peaceful but Ul'dah has that 'bustling city' feel to it.

7 - It features a rampaging Goobbue and a panty-shot within the first 5 minutes?

And since that massive goobbue was trying to stomp them all to death, we know what filled those particular panties.
