Please make my Barbarians Bardiche not ****.

This is actually quite clever from Yoshida, he's put in pretty much plain text exactly what is going on. The information isn't necessarily new but it does debuff a lot of the BS agreements on the official forums over the new content - honestly, you would think some people there were creating the game themselves.

Soloman, it doesn't matter. He said MATERIA!!!

It is only a matter of time before we are fighting Sephiroth inside Nanawa Mines, while trying to stop Meteor!

I didn't think I'd ever see an executive from a major Japanese corporation say the following

Some interesting new items on that list... hopefully things start rolling out in force next month.

So does the bolded "up until summer" mean this is all intended for 1.18?

To me that phrasing means it's intended to take place prior to summer arriving. Though it may just be a translation thing and he meant "throught" summer.

It's all win, especially:

-NEW-
Mount system (name tentative) -NEW-
Examination of mount system (including chocobos) -NEW-
Establishment of details for mount system

Here is Yoshi-P's commentary for those unable to visit the link. But it's worth a click later to see the awesome table.

Quote:
Hello again, all fans of FINAL FANTASY XIV!

Today’s letter marks the tenth entry in the series, which is still going strong thanks to your support. As always, I’ll endeavor to keep the latest information flowing to you, so keep watching this space!

It’s been a while since I last updated our list of changes, so I figured it was due for a good clean up. Like last time, I’ve grayed out the items already implemented and noted what patch they were released in. New entries to the list are appropriately marked as -NEW-. The Battle System section was getting a bit large, so I made a separate category for enemy and field changes. This time around, the list contains additions planned for up until summer 2011. You see what I did there with the bold font for emphasis? But anywho, without further ado, feast your eyes on the list in its entirety! (Remember, these are our plans until summer 2011!)

Now here’s the accompanying commentary. On the hot topic of battle, as our lead battle planner Akihiko Matsui posted on the forums the other day, major changes are in store heading into summer, such as the introduction of auto-attack. Now, to make Matsui stop his incessant poking (he’s still at it!), let me put it this way—the theme of the overhaul to the battle system is reward effort, reduce monotony. Let’s see if that holds off the pokes.

Think of the satisfaction you get when taking out an enemy solo by a stroke of brilliance. Or the supreme exhilaration you feel when pwning entire hoards of foes by playing out your party role to perfection. Now, in contrast, imagine a person who, with only half his heart in the battle, struggles to dispatch the enemy. This kind of range in experience is what we’re aiming for with the reformed battle system—a system that rewards effort and innovation. Revisions to the Armoury System and battle algorithms will be spearheading the changes, along with the introduction of the job system. We’re pressing forward with changes catering to both solo and party play, so you can rest assured whatever your playing style.

1.18 will see levequest balancing go into full swing, starting with revisions centered on rewards. As for crafting and gathering, we’re tweaking existing recipes and adding brand-new ones for crafter gear ahead of the summer. I’m pleased to say we’ve concluded our feasibility study for the Materia crafting system (though the name is still tentative), and will soon hammer out the details for the UI and start working on the data.

Now, there’s one new item on the list that fans of the FINAL FANTASY series wouldn’t have missed: the long-awaited battle with the primal Ifrit is on the way! But that’s hardly where it ends. We’ll be summoning forth more and more primals in the future, so keep an eye out for further announcements.

A number of plans made at the beginning of the year will soon be ripe for release. Among these are the shiny new job system (a proper system, mind you, not just renamed classes), an in-game achievement system related to Lodestone character histories, and new modes of transport to address the mobility issue. Once our current plans progress to the next stage, I believe it’ll be possible to unveil a longer-term update schedule. (We’ve been giving chocobos a lot of thought, but it’s hard to establish a timeframe before we define exactly what needs to be done.)

And that about does it for this letter. For next time, I’m planning to write all about our progress on auto-attack, and hope to be able to present the feature to you in fully animated glory rather than with dull screenshots. (Note to self: have Lodestone crew implement video embedding on the website.)

Thanks for reading! Catch you next time and/or on the forums!

Ummm... Well, it being called Materia, would lend some sort of credence to it perhaps being -similar- to its namesake system, which, for all intents and purposes was a pretty nifty system.

Blind hate is no better than blind fanboyism, you know that right?

Am I alone in hoping Gridania gets completely razed?

I have to say that after these changes listed I am definately coming back to FFXIV in full force. To me, this looks like just the makeover the game needs. Between the battle system changes, job system, and new content this is really starting to look like a new game... a complete one.

I really hope it does mean all this is done before summer starts like it says in bold, two times.

Summer 2011 starts on June 21st, by the way.

EDIT: Which would mean that all of the things listed in that chart would have to be implemented between this upcoming patch on the 23rd, and 1.18 in "mid-june".

The Materia system is probably going to be like the glyph system from WoW...some special items that can be crafted and equipped to gear that increases certain stats...also, like the materia system from FFVII, lol.

Man, Dungeons, Jobs, Story quests, Prime Battles, Materia, Return = 0 anima, More travelling options, Roaming Beastmen AND Beastmen strongholds....holy crap, thats a lot of win.

Neither do you, maybe it generates elitist, snide and snotty comments. No wait you already have that function, so that can't be it.

Sorry for getting excited over a game I am loving. Clearly humor is not your strong point.

My deepest apologies.

I think it's great that the devs are finally getting down to some of the bigger root problems, but as many have said before: is it already too late? It IS almost nine months after launch, and even though most educated people know that development takes time, most MMO players aren't patient any longer.

I'm not trying to rain on an actually great thread, just stating that all of these whirlwind revisions might make zero difference in the long run, especially with the company in financial straits.

I hope for everyone's sake, that things turn out, there's a mild miracle and people start returning to the potentially wonderful world of Eorzea.

I can't think of any one game that has tried so hard to keep the few players it had while it overhauled the whole experience, plus the fact that there may still be a ps3 release to give it a new influx of players and a second review, this equals a whole new situation for a MMO. What S-E needs for success with this game is to get some positive press from the AAA sites like IGN and 1UP once the major changes have been fully implemented.
I also hope that things turn out, I love the lore and world so far, and want to see more of it!

when he bolded SUMMER of 2011 at the beginning I actually pulled out my calender to make sure we were in 2011. big check! yes this is going to be an awesome update.

Chocobos by the end of the year. Materia! Roaming beastman and beastman strongholds = MAJOR win. I was so in awe the first time I made it to Davoi/Monastic Cavern, it really gave me a super-spy feel like I was infiltrating some place dangerous. I love this addition.

Well, there is a lot to said in here:

- Materia crafting, sound cool, like enchanting. Nice adition.
- Mount and stuff ... nice.
- auto-attack and some chance to job system.
- no more swap stats to be able to to play a diferent job.
- CONTENT: Dungeons, Ifrit, Storyline.
- More NM.
- More quest, rebalancing gear.
- Company and you.

I have to say this all sound really good. I hope it will be done as soon as posible.

I agree, but didn't he say at some point that 1.18 was going to be mid-June? I wouldn't at all be surprised if it was later, but his original estimated date could very well have been with the knowledge that some or all of this new information was coming as well.

Edit: re-read Letter IX, he originally said 'earliest' would be mid-June, but yea, I have to assume he knew these announced changes were in the works at the time.

lol this is an MMO forum our only sustinence is the scraps of info SE absent mindedly brushes off of the development table. Our obsesive compulsive behavior of checking this site 20+ times a day on the slight off chance that new info arises indicates how much this MMO is on our minds, it should be an automatic given that our expectations will be ridiculously high :)

Geeze! What's with all the idiots complaining about no Choco's at launch!?!?!?

In almost EVERY FF game you have NO access to freely ride Chocobo's until, at the EARLIEST, half way through the game!

Have none of you actually played all of the FF games? Or even ONE?

Don't get me wrong, I will welcome the implementation of Chocobo's once they arrive, but to say they should've been in at launch is like saying "FF7 would've been sooo much better if right at the beginning I could just leave Midgar, hop on a gold Chocobo and run the the North Cave to kill Sephiroth. The in-between stuff totally sucked anyway!"

Why would I not take something literally when it's from an official update?... not to mention it's bolded twice for emphasis. "Up until summer" is a pretty vague phrase, and over on the official forums, it seems like a lot of people are confused by it too, not just me.

And how is that expectation obnoxiously high? We're talking about adding auto attack, the job system that they claim they've been planning for 4 months now, 1 "big" battle with Ifrit, 2 dungeons, and mounts.

Given the very minimal content we've gotten thus far since launch, I wouldn't be surprised if they already had all the above finished modelling and storyboarding wise.

On a side note: those of you claiming to have "read" the Japanese version of the letter would know that the wording is just as vague as in all the other language versions of the post, but you're all using online translators, so please don't spread false info :(

Seriously...don't @#%^ing take every word so literal. He says UP UNTIL SUMMER. This itself includes every month from now til the END of summer to me.

It is kind of confusing. Does until mean before or does it mean up to and including? I am guessing it's up to and including but that's not an easy question to answer. That certainly makes more sense (to me). He should have just said until the end of summer or something.

He says these are the plans up until summer 2011. Nothing is said about implementing them within that time.

I could still see them implement all this during the Summer.

Now that was something I had wondered about too. Is this letter just talking about plans and then just mentions what the plans pertain.

If it was coming from a guy who spoke english as a first language, Until summer has the implied meaning of 'at the beginning of summer', however given we've seen stuff get misunderstood in translation, I am going to assume it means before the end of summer, and that way if its earlier it'll be a pleasant surprise.

That was my first instinct but when your teacher said she will give you until Friday to turn in work that almost meant you had to turn it in sometime Friday at the latest not that you had to turn it in before Friday (ie Thursday).

The Japanese version says the same thing as the English. まで means "up until" or "right before" or a plethora of other things just like in the English version :(
