Hey all. I'm trying the game after playing for a week four months ago. Is there any way as a caster to just default to solo-casting. It's bugging me to constantly be asked about area of effect every. single. cast.

Am I missing something?

You can default to solo casting via macros:

/aoe off
/ac "Scourge" <t>

Other than that you're stuck hitting z.

Man, that's awful. Seriously, is it 2011? I'm not actually in a coma, am I?

The second part of casting is not to toggle AoE, but to choose the target for the ability. You can select a different target than your locked on target, and also toggle with Z if you want AoE. Even other classes (that can't AoE) have the same selection.

The functionality is fine.

Once you set AOE off through interface it stays that way...there's no need to select it every time unless something has changed.

Your point is taken, but we have different definitions of "fine". Clunky would be my take.

edit, sorry for the banter, this Z issue aswell as the camera/action bar bug have equally been my #1 gripes since beta.

just because its working as intended doesnt mean its a "fine" system. the system is horrible, clunky, and isnt used anywhere else in existance because of those reasons. there is nothing wrong with baing able to turn AOE off and have it stay off until you hit Z again (or whichever key).
being able to select a different target after selecting that spell is the same as asking "are you sure", YES IM @#%^ING SURE FOR THE 1000TH TIME.
ive heard some people say "well i might forget its off and mess things up" well then i guess thats a question of skill isnt it? a good player wont forget its off (no ones perfect)
or how about we have it like FFXI and every other MMO ever made where you have AOE abilities and you have SOLO abilities, this way there is no confusion and the monotony of having to press Z every. friggin. time. is no longer there, you hit the ability and thats it. much faster that way.

This is pretty much exactly where I'm coming from. I did one leve and a very small (two person) behest and that's about all I could stomach. It's awful, imho.

There's a difference between "fine" and "good." I have two R50 casters and while I have no qualms with the system, there is definitely room for improvement.

last time i playd a caster in ff14 ...granted it was a long time ago...i disliked the aoe choice constantly.

we need -ga spells like in 11, add another permanant/optional bar to UI if need be, but we need em. they were more user friendly then this new system.

newer isnt necessarily better.
