Hi!

I know absolutely NOTHING about this game, except for that it got a bad start.
But I'm still interested in trying it out now that it's been over six months, and yesterday I found the Collector's Edition on sale for about $30 in a store in my town, and I was like **** yeah I might as well go for it!

But before i do that I would just like to know if the game is indeed FREE to play?
The store guy couldn't figure out if there where any Gametime included with the game, and after some research it even seemed like it was free.
So, is it?

Thanks for reading ;)

FFXIV is NOT free to play, it's a subescription game.

the game comes with it's original 1 month free play (trial) and at the moment Square Enix is not charging any subescriptions untill they consider the game is up to their standards.

the majority of people think this will happen with the next expansion or when the game is finally released on PS3 but it could well happen this month with the new patch or even tomorrow if they so wish it!

Oh I see.
So if I buy the game now I'll be able to play it free for a while but it WILL eventually be a monthly fee again?

Thanks for the fast response!

Please note you will also have to go through the process of how you will be paying ie. Credit/debit card or crysta or whatever before you can play, but yes no charges at this current time...

Short answer: It is currently F2P with no date set on when it will be chargeable.

Would you mind giving me the "long answer" too?
I'm not sure I get it yet.

It is currently free, all you need to do is set up your account. Once your account is set up, you will need to set up CC info and such for when they start billing.

For the time being, your CC will not be charged a monthly fee. As far as I know, there is no set date as to when monthly billing will start. Enjoy it now while it's free... ;)

Or just setup Crysta, then remove Crysta after your account is setup. Mines been running fine for 2 months with this.

throwing in my attempt to clear this up. This is not a free to play game. F2P games you create an account with an email address and you're good to go, This doesn't work like that. You will need to setup an account with a valid credit card and a crysta or click and buy account, as if you would be paying. However they have yet to bill anyone ever for the game, and have said they will not be billing anyone until further notice. You will not have to pay anything currently to play, however it works nothing like the free to play model that every other MMO uses.

It's not a free-to-play game. They just aren't charging because the game was so bad at release, they don't want everyone to leave by charging until they fix all the issues people complained with at release.

Thank you all for your answers :)
Especially about the payment/billing.
It's the strangest payment-method I've ever seen, especially since we aren't supposed to pay anything at the moment.

I already expected to have to register my payment options even during the trial period since that's standard with MMO's, but this one really makes it feel like I am in fact BUYING something so it was nice with heads up about it :P

Well I think you know what to expect, then.
