So, friend convinced me to give this a try. So, wondering did they change up the PC controls since release?
Also any tips for a soon to be noob?

PC is still kinda clunky, but it works for me. UI is a lot more responsive than launch.

The only tip I can really give you is to take it slow. They have not added much yet and it is easy to run out of things to do. If you can take it slow and are not looking for big group content like raids and dungeons you could at this point have fun untill SE starts really changing the game. But if you did like I did and race to 50 you will find out that you will run out of things to do fast.

Only problem with this tip IMO is for people like me who started from day one. 9 months and they still have not really added anything new. But for new players I hope SE is not planing to take another 9+ months to fix the game.

Well I don't know if it helps, but I just started a few days ago. The combat system, at least for the time being, is very different and the game at times feels a touch poorly optimized (performance wise). Like every MMO it has issues (there isn't one that doesn't have them), but for me, it has something that I haven't had since vanilla wow and ffxi release. When I fired this game up and started playing, the charm of it just took over. It doesn't quite play the same as any other on the market. I actually really like that. Like ffxi my one toon can do any job I want him to, if I am willing to take the time to do it. I hope you like it as much as I do.

In my opinion the most important thing is for you to find something you enjoy doing. There is no point in getting to r50 just so you have a r50 class.

If you don't know what to do in game try and get some of your preferences to r20 and see which you actually plike the best ion practice, sometimes it might not be the same as in theory.

Try to finish the questline that's given to you at the start first. It's a nice way to get to know the basics, get some money and unlocks additional skills for each class.

Try out all the jobs before settling on one. That way you get access to several skills, but it also gives you the chance to get a feel of them before you choose the one for you. I took MRD to 50 first (as I'm a Warrior at heart) but I have to admit my job preference in XIV is Lancer (it may all change with the new system though). Don't be afraid to shout or ask questions and try a few linkshells before you find one that fits.

Always remember that when in Behest only engage the mobs that have their name in red. If a "red named" mob is engaged and people kill a different mob that still had its name in yellow then there is no SP gain for anyone in the party. This is a cardinal rule!

Started off on Sariona server. In the nation with the Bastok blue flag. The desert place.
Blue haired mithra named Sapphire Layla. I refuse to call the races by anything else but their
FFXI version names. XP

He is right about leveling many jobs. You'll most likely want to take every DOW, DOM, and DOH to at least 10 (for ability). Enjoy this time to explore each of the jobs. By the time you do this, you will have a good feel for what you want to pursue and have a very dynamic foundation for your character. I think r20 is where quests start opening up for each class. Exp is on a generous curve until r23.
