Does this game have any cool equipment? I liked at at higher levels in FFXI, armor starts to get more colorful and unique , starting with the Artifact equipment. when i was new to FFXI looking at red mage and white mage af, etc. gave me a reason to keep levelling up, I thought they looked cool.

But yea I was looking up FF 14 videos on the other hand, it looks like level 50 players are still wearing grey and brown newbie gear.

Did you even try to use the search box at the top? Have you tried finding up NMs and seeing they drop? Looking through the list provided to you, the one on which you apparently never turned the page, I see grey, brown, beige, taupe, green, blue, red, yellow, and black equipment.

I love the aesthetic of this game, personally: everything looks like it has a thickness, a weight, a material, and a function. The colours are subdued and everything consequently looks unified and sensible, but there is still a feeling of progression. I do look forward to more armour being added (what MMO player doesn't?), but I also think that what we have is impressive...

...but if you couldn't find any suitable colours on that list, I guess your definition of "cool-looking" is anything purple or orange. o_O

The game has lots of "cool looking" gear. The problem isn't a lack of gear that looks great though, it's a lack of gear that looks unique.

While I agree and like that the pieces do have "weight" in the type of materials and a sense of solid continuity in design, I can't say I'm a fan of the armor in this game.

Partly it has do with how the armor is implemented (not by level and as reward) and the crafting system around it. The other part is that I find the designs boring. Eh.

What's cool to you won't always be what's cool to others.
I completely understand what you mean about XI, but this is a different game with different rules.

I always wanted to wear a Haubergeon in FFXI. I'd see it all over the place, and it just looked really cool to me. It took a good while but I finally got to wear one, and it felt pretty **** good to reach that point.

But, if you want to wear a Haubergeon in FFXIV, you can just buy one, and wear it at level one. It's not going to be any good for you really, but you can do it. Don't even need to be one of the jobs listed on it. You can still wear it. Your Thaumaturge can wear a Hauby if you want.

So...there's nothing to exactly look forward to in that way. You're not going to see a Templar's Haubergeon or whatever and think "Ooh I can't wait until I can wear that!"
You can just go buy it in the Market Wards.

Personally, I don't like most of the gear currently in the game. It absolutely fits the world, I'm not even going to try and deny that. The colors are pretty natural, and the textures are as well. Hemp has a rough look to it compared to smooth and shiny velvet. It's all very realistic in that regard.
It's also rather boring.
There aren't many unique models in the game. They all follow a pretty clear progression for the most part.
Sheepskin>Dodoskin>Leather>Toadskin for Harnesses/Subligar, Jerkins/Cullotes

Hempen/Cotton/Canvas/Velvet/Linen for...my god. Shirts, Doublets, Gowns, Dalmatica, Vests, Robes, Half Robes, Hats, Berets, Sarouel, Kecks, Pants, Tights, etc, etc, etc(my god man, I never really thought about that before).

They all, in a way, just look the same, with slightly different textures and colors.
As for what I do think looks cool
Coatee's(Canvas, Linen, Moth-Eaten etc): On Females.
Vintage Scale Mail
Vintage Celata
Velveteen Robes(Black and Red)
Doublets(Cotton and Canvas)

There's this Domino mask that drops from some Ant NM, I can't really remember the name, but I thought it looked pretty cool. There's also the Robin Hood type hat with mask included that some Archer NPC's wear. It doesn't seem to exist as gear players can wear right now, but I hope it comes out eventually.

I'd just play and see what you like. Or find a model viewer somewhere. It's not like it's going to cost you a whole lot(nothing) to play.

Some of the gear I like the most:

http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/item.html?ffxivitem=8030034
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/item.html?ffxivitem=8031604
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/search.html?q=templar
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/item.html?ffxivitem=4040202
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/item.html?ffxivitem=4100401

At the end of the day it all comes down to personal preferance, I'm not so much one to go after the bright colour clashing.

I like the simple, yet realistic armor in this game.

I do find some of the gear options limited on certain jobs, like finding decent footwear and hands for my 30 PUG, but I try to maintain some of that carrot chasing by staying strict on not wearing gear out of my level or job, so my Pug wears leathers while my Mrd is decked out in heavy metal.

I like the caleta's and much of the other knightly gear that was just lacking in FFXI. So I like all the armor but I think a lot of the light armors and leathers are uninspired and lackluster because you see the same models from 1 to 50 from hemp to velveteen.

i dont personally like the way alot of gear looks. some items do look cool like the flametongue. but overall every catagory of gear looks the same and doesn't have enough detail.

like mage shields for instance. the best one you can have right now is 3 planks of wood tied together. not very epic at all. even the r50 mage gear looks TERRIBLE. it makes you looks like a court jester. the seer's cowl also could look nicer, it's just all one shade of red.

the only gear i find really cool is the gear archers get to use. and i'm really REALLY not down with how CON wands look. they just look like brances. THM gets nice wands though.

anyway i could keep going on but i think thats enough. i'm hoping they start putting more detail and effort into future gear.

I think having unique armour sets, or armour that is a bit over the top and/or harder to come by is one of the main reasons people play MMO's to such exhuastive lengths.

Other MMO's ive played had unique armour sets you had to work for and that kept me playing for months/years doing the same monotenous events over and over..... I wouldn't of routinely played dyna week in and week out if the RDM AFII gear wasn't so elusive and looked **** cool. its the same reason I wanted to reach 75 ASAP so I could get the end game gear and be /checked by loads of people..... at the end of the day its all one big ******* contest and to be admired by others on the server for all the cool gear you have. speaking of which I want sweet *** weapons intro'd to the game ala FFXI like Kclub or that sword that proc'd twice and dropped from Charybdis (cant remember the name of the sword but can rember the irritating NM that dropped it) some of the current NM drops seem ok but really they need to intro badass weapons that make you cream your pants in anticipation.

The thing is, alot of the cool looking gear mentioned in this thread that comes from XI is 50+ gear, most of which was released sometime after the oiginal game. All the pre-50 stuff is as drab as **** even more so than XIVs stuff, with the only decent looking pre-50 gear (Noct, Seer and Kampf) coming quite sometime after launch. Haubys came from the zilart era and I'm pretty sure AF didn't exist at this point in XIs life either.

If XIV hadn't been such a mess at launch we'd probaly be seeing some more unique items but untill its sorted I feel were stuck with reskins for sometime.

^^ Excatly.

You have to think about
FFXIV as if we are all playing before Genkai 1. We're all in Lizard gear and this lizard gear is **** fine.

They already mentions that AF gear is in the works, but we'll have to wait until the game flies right. Personally, I think that the detail that goes into this "noob" gear is a great sign of what amazing stuff we can expect in the future.

That's funny: one of the reasons I took up Conjurer was because of how much I liked the wands that looked like branches. It felt very "elementalist" and close to what I pictured a conjurer using - calling forth the forces of nature through the surrounding greenery. :P

I am personaly very fond of alot of the equipment appearances, IMO though they messed up while trying to make some of the cloathing (Shirt's and coatee's in particular) look **** on female characters. It just tends to look slutty to me and tastless.
I would have been much happier with them if they were slightly less pulled open. A little less prostitute if you will :P

Here's to hopeing that the gear doesn't get cartoony/goofy like alot of games these days.

I totally agree.

I think SE just got desperate at one point:
1: "Players are dropping fast, sir, what do we do!?"
2: "Boobs, crewman, boobs."

yeah, Saddly the shirt's been there since the beginning. Makes me think some of the desingers either just don't get it or someone was doing some "private" design work, it got found and some higher up idiot okayed it.

they could have still made the wands look "Elementalist" and not have them look like i walked up to the closest tree and broke a branch off of it.

just google wooden wands and you will see some nice designs.

That actually makes them more unique than a "nicely designed" wand, though, since that's what you'd expect to see. Again, I liked that they looked that way. XD

It's pointless to argue tastes, though; SE could easily have a few styles of wand.

The shirt is fair to both genders though, men do bare chests with it as well as women. Only the coatee set look different on the two genders.

That doesn't stop the shirt from coming across as slutty, one or two buttons would have kept it showing more than enough cleavage without feeling like I should be turning tricks in a Limsa bar.

AF for every job at the time existed when the level cap was 60 in XI, which was around half a year after its release (EDIT: its /Japanese/ release. Therefor, AF existed half a year before Zilart). What we have now is pretty depressing. A bunch of iron and brass weapons, and drab, brown-colored hemp-based gear. Nothing epic so far.

Also, yeah... best mage shield is 3 pieces of [rotting] wood tied together with string.
