Thinking of Coming Back. Opinions?Follow

Hey, all. I played in the beta and actually bought the CE of the game (and actually developed the Android Eorzea Clock), and then just never installed it. I just ordered the parts for a new computer (Core i7 2600K, 16Gb DDR3, GTX460), and was thinking of giving it another try once I get the system built.

Specifically in the beta, I was frustrated with the lack of an Auction House, the terribad controls, and the overall slowness of the interface. The levequests also seemed repetitive, and I didn't like the exp caps they put in place.

In your opinion, how much has this stuff improved? I hear there is a Market search now, and that the controls have improved. Have they added anything more substantial, like NMs and storyline fights and stuff like that?

I've been sort of halfway following the game, and I know they put a new dev team in place. I've read bits and pieces here in the forums that give me hope that it might be better, but I've gone through a lot of posts and still don't really have a clear idea. I'm sure this will probably start some arguments, which isn't my intention. I just want to know if it's worth spending 20 hours or so installing and checking the game out before I decide one way or another. So who can convince me whether it's worth it or not? Specifically, I'd like to hear from those who played in the beta and recently came back and their experience, but I'd be open to hearing everyone else's opinions, too. Thanks!

There's fun to be had, to be sure, for at least until you hit the mid 30s, in the current state of the game.

1-23 is lightning fast (actually quite stupidly so), which gives you access to rank 1, 10, 20 and 30 camps. All you need is to get 33 and you'll open the final camps (40). You should be able to start tackling solo some of the lesser NMs around 30-35, and you'd be able to tackle the medium ones with friends.

Interface speed is much better -- it's still not as fast as WoW, but it's very playable and reminiscent of FFXI, Controls haven't changed really.

The enemy rank indicator, onscreen HP bars, agro icons (if mobs are passive/active), market wards search, double retainers and removal of +1 and +2 drops all make the game somewhat more user friendly than it was at launch.

You can also summon your retainers anywhere, even if they're in another city's wards (but they won't return there to peddle your wares)

I would still play it daily or so, but due to some reason or others, I haven't done so a while. Currently waiting for 1.18 to arrive to return, and hopefully my prolonged absence means I'll be able to enjoy myself a couple of weeks before I stop logging again :P

I've been playing the game since launch. The first thing you'll notice is that the UI is much less laggy. That right there makes it much nicer to play compared to what it was at launch. Also, you no longer get sp based on how many times you hit mobs. It's based on how your rank compares to the mobs rank(similar to FFXI). There still isn't much partying happening. There are some side quests for each city that you can do. They will be adding some instanced dungeons once patch 1.18 comes out. The market ward search function makes the market wards useable. You no longer have to search random retainers looking for an item that you want to buy. Also, each character you make can have 2 retainers for storage instead of the original 1 planed at release. It's worth installing and trying out I think. It's free to play at the moment, although you will still have to enter payment information. You wont be charged for anything though. Local and regional levs are still pretty monotonous/repetitive. Besides the instanced dungeons, there will be many changes to the battle system. The "fatigue" system will be removed at some point. Oh and iirc, patch 1.17 introduced many small NM's rank 30 or 35. Also, for rank 50's there are special levs for you to get unique equipment and also atleast 5 NM's meant for a full party of 50's. I have to say though, many of those R50+ NM's can be taken down with 4 or less people. Which brings me to the new size of parties. Remember how you used to have a massive 15 man party? It's now limited to 8. Also, behest is limited to only 8 people per camp as well. That's pretty much all the main things I can remember.

I'd suggest you wait until patch 1.18 drops and then play it with a fresh perspective with the new battle system. There's no point in you learning how to play the game with the old system and then suddenly turning around and relearing how to play with the new one.

It's not a whole lot better. I'd say wait until 1.18 comes out at least. Combat is supposed to change quite a bit.

While I agree on the rest, the statement above is not true.
Interface speed is still horrible, especially (but not limited to) when buying and selling.

If you've waited this long, then I'd wait a little bit longer -- at least until after Patch 1.18 comes out.

I plan to play once 1.18 goes live, but honestly I don't think I'll really dive headlong back into the game until after Patch 1.20, which, at this point, seems like it will be the last of the three giant infrastructure patches of the summer. Hopefully the game will be fulfilling enough to play by my birthday in October!

And if it isn't, fortunately college football season will be well underway and I'll be distracted by that anyway.

I believe somewhere there was a "clarification" (oops it's going to take longer than we thought) that these changes will be until the end of the year now. It's early and I can't remember if it was a dev post or an interview somewhere, but yea.. don't think jobs will be by the end of summer. That said, I'd still pop your head in after 1.18 because at least combat will have changed drastically by that point.

Read letter from the producer X on lodestone if you want to have an idea where the game is heading also, it was a pretty large, nicely laid out grid of 'this is where we are, this is the next step we're taking'.

I gotta agree. I played beta, came back a few months ago after buying the game and, while I'm impressed there's more content, the interface is still completely unacceptable. Maybe it's because I chose a highly populated server, but I have no idea where comments like "The interface is totally better now" come from. Are you all using crappy Java GUIs at work or something, and just are tolerant of slow, clunky interfaces?

Everything is relative to retail release. It is "better" now relative to what it was before by far.

interface is about 1000% times better than at release. It is still not up to snuff but - man, if you weren't there, you can't even imagine. When you were trying to sell things the lag was so bad it was almost a full second between each item on the list. That was AFTER waiting 3 seconds for the npc dialog box to even open.

It was so bad.

It is much better now but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

As to the OP I played for about six months from beta-launch-quit and I have checked in here and there but I would wait till at least the next patch before coming back.

I have played for about 6 total hours in 4 or so months since quitting and returning to XI, and frankly, the amount of change that has happened is far less than I expected.

There have been improvements, and honestly, you would probably have some fun tooling around and exploring on a new character (although good luck finding level appropriate gear) - and you really don't have much to lose if you already own a copy of the game. So my advice would be to wait until the patch is set to touch down (maybe install the day before the patch)

and try out the new battle system - check out the new gears and recipes - play around in the vast world, etc.

A good rule of thumb to try it again will probably be when they start charging to play, that will be the point they are no longer ashamed of it.

If you're the guy who came up with the "How I mine for fish" picture, you really need to come back. I was involved in that original thread, and that picture still cracks me up. Genius.

Seriously, the short answer is that we'd love to have you in game with us now, but it probably wouldn't be the worst thing to wait a few more months. Apparently, the reason they haven't implemented as many changes as we'd like by this point is because they've been rewriting the game's fundamental code to make those changes possible. Over the next 3 months or so, they're going to be implementing wholesale changes to fundamental aspects of the game -- battle, crafting, gathering, and the social aspects.

So I expect the game will be very different -- and hopefully, better -- by October. If you can hold off until then, they will have hopefully implemented and refined the changes, making it more likely you'll stick around for the long haul.

Regardless of when you come back, we're looking forward to having you back.

This is probably the main reason why this mod isn't totally pessimistic about the game's future! I acknowledge the fact that there's extremely little to do right now, so I figure why log in and willingly burn myself out? I have faith the game will be great, if it has the time to mature. The golden question is whether the game will have enough time.

No, not really. I only log on 2-3 times a week right now myself. There's not a ton of things to do that I haven't already done, and I just got a Kinect, which is a lot more interesting than I had expected. I meant the comment as more of a joke about how little has changed lately that our Mod doesn't even need to log on. I'm looking forward to these next 3 patches as well, and won't let my wife start playing till 1.18.

So, sounds like the consensus is to wait at least until the next patch. Thanks for the opinions. I'm encouraged, at least, by the fact that I remember a lot of the people who posted on this thread from when the beta was going on. At least there's some people who have faith that the game will get better. And the college football comment... truer words have never been spoken.

I returned last weekend, used up all my anima, haven't played more that 4 hours since then. Currently back up to ~40 anima, yay. They really need to figure this anima thing out, I think a little attention here would make things a lot better.

I agree. At least i would visit the other Cities more often, if i wouldnt have to look at the Anima Bar.
Airships between the Cities would help a lot.

Depending on your current rank and/or level, you may want to wait for a few patches. If you still have plenty of room for your character to grow, you could come back soonish, but if you are pushing 50 (****, even 40ish), I'd definitely sit it out a bit.
